Murree Brewery’s direct exports of alcoholic products resumed after Pakistan changed its export policy in 2022 and granted the company specific permission in 2025. Reports describe a test shipment to the United Kingdom, followed by exports to Portugal and Japan. A September 2026 report also names Thailand, though that destination is supported by a single report in the sources cited here.
What changed—and when?
The export story involves two separate steps: a change in national policy and later, company-specific permission. Neither step by itself proves that large-scale shipments followed.

Does Pakistan now allow all alcohol exports?
No. The 2022 change created a route for exports to non-OIC destinations; reporting says the government did not issue blanket approval for every Pakistani alcohol producer. Murree’s permission was company-specific. The change concerns exports, not domestic alcohol rules, and “non-Muslim countries” sometimes used in coverage is not interchangeable with the policy criterion of non-OIC destinations. Why could Murree target foreign buyers?
Murree is described as Pakistan’s oldest and best-known brewery. It says it was founded in 1860, and its beer was known in British India by the turn of the 20th century. Before the 1977 interruption, reporting says it had shipped alcoholic products to markets including India, the United States and Afghanistan. Murree Brewery history; BBC reporting.
The company also had an existing export business in non-alcoholic products. Reporting says Murree began exporting juices, bottled water and fruit-flavoured malt drinks to more than a dozen countries in 2020. Its export manager said existing distributors in the UK and Japan were among the first to buy its beer: “They are easy to target because they know us.” That prior network is context for the renewed beer trade; it does not mean the same markets previously received alcohol. BBC reporting; FoodAg 2025 profile.

Murree’s Chief Executive, Isphanyar Bhandara, described the historical rationale cited for the export ban: “The theory behind the export ban was that an Islamic country should not be seen as exporting a vice.” On the fiscal incentive, he said: “The government benefits if we export.” The brewery’s long local history also gives it a visible place in the country’s commercial landscape; author Ali Akbar Khan called it “a landmark.” BBC reporting.

The policy change opened a narrow export path, and Murree’s permission and reported shipments mark a gradual return to foreign markets. The reported facts do not establish that exports are substantial, profitable, or available to every alcohol-consuming country.
