There is no single universal multi-chain NFT standard. A multi-chain NFT project combines a blockchain’s native ownership standard, metadata conventions, royalty logic, cross-chain messaging and indexing tools. ERC-721 may be the best-known reference for unique NFTs on Ethereum and other EVM networks, but Solana, Bitcoin, Tezos, Cardano and Cosmos use materially different models.
This 2025-focused guide explains what each standard does, what “multi-chain” can mean, and how creators, developers and buyers can assess authenticity, portability, royalties and bridge risk. Standards and tooling may change after 2025, so current implementation documentation should be checked before a launch.

What an NFT standard actually standardizes
An NFT standard is a shared interface or data convention that lets wallets, marketplaces, explorers and applications handle digital assets predictably. Depending on the standard, it may define:

- Token identifiers and collection relationships.

These functions are separate from the artwork or other media. ERC-721, for example, provides functions including ownerOf, balanceOf, transferFrom, safeTransferFrom, approve and setApprovalForAll; it does not guarantee that the linked image remains available or that the owner has copyright in the underlying work. Ethereum’s ERC-721 documentation describes the interface and ownership model.

Token standards versus metadata standards
This is the distinction most simplified NFT explainers miss.
Token standard
The token standard defines the blockchain-level asset: who owns it, how it moves, how it is identified and what permissions apply. Examples include ERC-721, ERC-1155, Metaplex Core and Tezos FA2.
Metadata standard
Metadata describes the asset to applications. A familiar JSON structure might look like this:
{
"name": "Example NFT #1",
"description": "A sample collectible",
"image": "ipfs://...",
"attributes": [
{"trait_type": "Background", "value": "Blue"}
]
}
Metadata may be stored fully on-chain, on IPFS, on Arweave, on a conventional web server, in a smart-contract datum, in a Solana account or inside a Bitcoin inscription. A token can remain recorded on-chain while its image or metadata becomes unavailable, changes, or is served from a failed website. “On-chain NFT” should therefore specify whether it means on-chain ownership, metadata, media or all three.

ERC-721: the baseline unique-NFT standard
ERC-721 represents individually distinguishable tokens. Under its model, an asset is identified by the combination of its contract address and token ID. It is the dominant reference standard in Ethereum and EVM environments, not a universal format for every blockchain.
Good uses: one-of-one art, individual collectibles, memberships, unique game items and tickets with separate identities.
Strengths: mature tooling, familiar ownership and transfer functions, broad wallet support and straightforward integration.

Limitations: it is less efficient for large inventories of similar items, and batch operations generally require extensions or custom implementation. Applications should also treat token IDs as opaque identifiers rather than assuming they are sequential or start at zero; the ERC-721 specification does not require that assumption.
ERC-1155: editions, inventories and mixed assets
ERC-1155 allows one contract to manage multiple token types. A token ID can represent a unique item, an edition with several copies, a fungible in-game consumable or another application-defined asset. It is designed for efficient batch-oriented operations and mixed inventories. Ethereum’s standards documentation describes its multi-token model.

| Requirement | Typical default |
|---|---|
| Every item is individually unique | ERC-721 |
| Many copies share one token ID | ERC-1155 |
| Large game inventory | ERC-1155 or a native equivalent |
| Simple collectible with broad EVM expectations | ERC-721 |
| Mixed fungible and non-fungible assets | ERC-1155 |
ERC-1155 can reduce transaction and storage overhead in suitable workflows, but actual costs depend on implementation, calldata, gas conditions and the network. It does not make every token in a contract fungible; the project’s supply and application rules determine that meaning.
Useful Ethereum extensions
ERC-2981 royalties
ERC-2981 standardizes a royaltyInfo function that returns a recipient and royalty amount for a sale price. It is an information interface, not a universal enforcement mechanism. A marketplace may support it, ignore it, cap the amount or enforce royalties through separate transfer rules.
It can work with ERC-721 or ERC-1155, but it does not guarantee that every secondary sale pays the creator. A multi-chain project must decide whether royalties apply to wrapped assets, whether rates and recipients differ by chain, and what happens in an over-the-counter sale or custom marketplace.
ERC-2309 and ERC-4907
ERC-2309 provides a consecutive-transfer event useful for large-scale minting and indexing. ERC-4907 adds a time-limited user role separate from the owner, which can support rentals, lending or temporary game access. Neither extension guarantees support across wallets and marketplaces, and a rental role is not automatically a legal lease.

Many earlier Solana NFTs used the Metaplex Token Metadata program and associated metadata accounts. Metaplex Core is a newer native Solana asset standard built around a single-account asset model and a plugin architecture.
Core supports ownership, a metadata URI and plugin data in one account. Plugins and delegates can add behaviours such as attributes, transfer delegates and freeze delegates. That makes it a useful option for new Solana collections, game assets and projects requiring custom permissions.
Core is not ERC-721-compatible by default. It has different account, ownership and program semantics. An adapter, bridge, indexer or separate destination representation is needed for cross-chain functionality.

Metaplex’s Digital Asset Standard, or DAS, is an API specification for querying indexed Solana digital-asset data. DAS is an indexing and query layer, not the ownership standard itself. Documentation reviewed for Core gives an illustrative mint cost of about 0.0029 SOL; that is not a fixed price and can vary with network conditions, SOL’s market price and implementation choices.
Bitcoin Ordinals and inscriptions
Ordinals number individual satoshis, allowing specific sats to be tracked and transferred. Data can be attached through inscriptions. This is structurally different from an ERC-721 smart-contract interface. Ordinals documentation explains the numbering and inscription model.
- ERC-721 contracts maintain token ownership through a standardized API.
- Ordinals track a particular satoshi through Bitcoin transactions and inscription conventions.
- Bitcoin does not use ERC-style NFT contracts.
- Wallet, marketplace and indexer support depends on Ordinals-aware infrastructure.
- Authenticity analysis may require the inscription number, satoshi provenance, transaction history and collection conventions.
An inscription’s media may be on-chain while broader collection metadata uses external conventions. Sending the wrong satoshi can also produce unexpected results. A wrapped Bitcoin NFT on another network is a representation of the inscription, not the original Bitcoin object.
Tezos FA2
Tezos TZIP-12, commonly called FA2, is a multi-asset token interface that can support fungible, non-fungible and other token types. It supports standardized token operations, metadata conventions, batch transfers and application patterns comparable in some respects to ERC-1155.
FA2 is not simply “ERC-1155 on Tezos.” Its interfaces, account model, tooling, wallets and marketplace integrations differ. An adapter must translate asset semantics, permissions and metadata rather than merely rename functions.

Cardano native assets use a different model from Ethereum smart-contract NFTs. Their identity commonly depends on an asset policy ID and asset name. Metadata conventions include CIP-25 and CIP-68.
CIP-68 defines datum-based patterns for NFTs, fungible tokens and rich-fungible tokens. Its NFT pattern uses a user token and a reference NFT sharing an asset name under the specified label scheme. Cardano projects must decide whether metadata lives in transaction metadata, a datum or a registry, and which fields can change.
The Cardano token metadata server provides API support for CIP-26 and CIP-68 metadata resolution. When mapping Cardano assets to another chain, the policy ID and asset name must be preserved in the project’s canonical identity system.
Cosmos and ICS-721
ICS-721 is an interchain NFT transfer protocol for IBC-enabled chains. It defines packet data, state-machine behaviour and encoding for NFT transfers between compatible modules.

- More control - this Backup Pack enables you to securely own and manage your crypto with Bluetooth or Cable connectivity
It addresses class identifiers, token IDs, metadata, IBC ports and channels, and escrowed or represented assets on destination chains. Its identity model can include a source port, source channel and class ID, rather than only a local token number. See the ICS-721 specification.
ICS-721 is not a universal minting standard. It does not automatically make an Ethereum NFT, Solana asset or Bitcoin inscription transferable over IBC. Those assets require an adapter, wrapped representation or separate bridge architecture.
What “multi-chain NFT” can mean
1. Separate native mints
A project deploys a representation on Ethereum, Solana, Polygon and another network. Users receive a native experience without bridging, but independent minting can create duplicate supply, divergent ownership histories and metadata drift. The project must state which chain is canonical and whether representations can exist simultaneously.
2. Lock-and-mint bridge
The original asset is locked or escrowed on its source chain while a representation is minted on the destination. This can maintain one active circulating representation, but it introduces bridge risk, destination mint-authority risk and possible metadata or royalty loss.
3. Burn-and-mint migration
The source asset is burned and recreated on the destination, usually with a record of the original identity. This can avoid duplicate supply but may be irreversible, destroy marketplace history and create user-error or recovery problems.
4. Omnichain application
An application synchronizes state across chains while each network holds its own native representation. Wormhole documents multichain application and token-transfer workflows, while LayerZero is a lower-level omnichain messaging primitive. Neither is a universal NFT token standard. Wormhole documentation and research on LayerZero should be read alongside each project’s current security documentation.
The interoperability stack
Application: game item, ticket, membership or collectible
Asset identity: canonical collection ID, provenance and origin chain
Token: ERC-721, ERC-1155, Core, FA2, Cardano asset or Ordinal
Metadata: JSON, IPFS, Arweave, on-chain data, datum or inscription
Messaging: IBC/ICS-721, Wormhole, LayerZero-based messaging
Indexing: explorers, APIs, DAS, registries and custom indexers
Wallets and marketplaces: chain-specific client support
Compatibility can fail at any layer. A bridge may transfer ownership while the image fails to load, attributes disappear, royalty information is ignored, a game cannot read the destination asset, or a wallet displays a duplicate as if it were the original.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Designing identity and metadata across chains
A robust project should use a chain-independent identity, such as example:collection-001/token-42, and map it to each chain-specific representation:

This is an architectural best practice, not a universal standard. Publish the mapping in a signed, independently verifiable document or registry.

Separate immutable fields—such as the creator, collection ID, token number, origin chain and edition size—from mutable fields such as game statistics, images, levels or rental status. Preserve the original contract, token ID, metadata URI, bridge transaction, destination representation and migration version when wrapping or migrating.
IPFS and Arweave can improve content-addressability, but neither automatically guarantees pinning, availability, legal rights or permanent service. A normalized internal metadata schema with chain-specific renderers is safer than assuming one JSON document will behave identically on every network.
How to choose a standard
| Question | Likely direction |
|---|---|
| Is each asset unique? | ERC-721, Metaplex Core, FA2 or a native equivalent |
| Are there editions, consumables or large inventories? | ERC-1155 or a chain-native multi-token model |
| Must data be fully on-chain or dynamically updated? | Evaluate storage size, datum/account design and update authority |
| Which wallets, marketplaces and games must support it? | Choose the standard with tested target-client coverage |
| Is transfer across chains required? | Define whether the asset is viewed, wrapped, migrated or synchronized |
| What security assumptions are acceptable? | Compare native security, escrow, validators, relayers, guardians and admin keys |
For EVM projects, OpenZeppelin provides reusable contract implementations and security components at OpenZeppelin Contracts. Hosted infrastructure such as Alchemy’s NFT APIs or QuickNode documentation may simplify indexing and RPC access, but support varies by chain and plan. Solana teams can consult Metaplex’s developer documentation. These tools solve different problems and are not interchangeable or universally best.
Common failure modes
Duplicate supply
Independent deployments can create multiple supposedly identical originals. Define a canonical origin, map every representation, and state whether assets are mutually exclusive through lock-and-mint or burn-and-mint rules.
Metadata drift
Different chains may show different images or traits. Use content-addressed metadata where appropriate, version mutable data, preserve prior URIs and define which authority controls updates.
Bridge compromise
An attacker may mint unauthorized wrapped assets or unlock escrowed originals. Review validator, guardian, relayer, multisignature, light-client, upgrade and admin-key assumptions. Rate limits, circuit breakers, monitoring and a pause-and-recovery plan reduce exposure but do not eliminate it.
Stuck transfers
Users can lock or burn an asset while destination execution fails. Use message IDs, replay-safe execution, status visibility, defined timeout/refund rules and a support process that verifies the source transaction.
Recommended Free Tools
Wrong representation
Wallets and marketplaces may show a wrapped token as the original. Display the origin chain, source contract, source token ID, representation chain and bridge provenance.
Indexer inconsistency
Indexers can show stale ownership or missing metadata. For high-assurance authorization, read the canonical chain directly, use more than one provider where appropriate, account for reorganization and finality, and define cache-refresh rules.
Unsupported extensions
A wallet may support ERC-721 while ignoring ERC-2981, ERC-4907, dynamic metadata or custom permissions. Provide a standards-compliant baseline, treat extensions as optional capabilities and test the exact wallets and marketplaces your users will use.
Developer and buyer checklist
- Identify the canonical chain and canonical collection ID.
- Record each representation using its correct chain-specific identifier.
- Choose the native token standard for every supported chain.
- Define whether supply is duplicated, escrowed, burned or synchronized.
- Document immutable and mutable metadata fields.
- Preserve origin contract, token ID and bridge or migration transaction.
- State whether royalties are advisory or enforced, and where.
- Test wallets, marketplaces, games and indexers—not just contract interfaces.
- Document bridge verification, finality, replay protection, upgrade authority and emergency controls.
- Publish stuck-transfer, recovery and project-shutdown procedures.
- Obtain independent audits for contracts, bridges, metadata systems and privileged operations where the value at risk warrants it.
Final verdict
There is no single winner because the standards solve different problems. ERC-721 remains the straightforward default for unique EVM assets; ERC-1155 is generally better suited to editions and inventories; Metaplex Core is a native Solana option for new programmable assets; Ordinals require a Bitcoin-specific provenance model; FA2 and Cardano conventions belong to their own ecosystems; and ICS-721 is designed for NFT transfers among compatible IBC chains.
The phrase “multi-chain NFT” is meaningful only when a project explains its canonical identity, ownership model, metadata, royalty policy, bridge security and client support. Deploying similar artwork on several networks is not, by itself, interoperability.
