Approximate historical USD value = MSP ÷ 80
For example, 400 MSP was approximately $5 and 1,600 MSP was approximately $20. This is a historical U.S.-market convention—not a current Microsoft exchange rate, cash balance, or universal international conversion.

MS Points calculator
Enter the old Microsoft Points amount and divide by 80 to estimate its historical U.S. dollar value. Keep the result approximate, especially when the amount is not divisible by 80.
| Microsoft Points | Approximate historical U.S. value |
|---|---|
| 80 MSP | $1 |
| 160 MSP | $2 |
| 400 MSP | $5 |
| 800 MSP | $10 |
| 1,200 MSP | $15 |
| 1,600 MSP | $20 |
| 2,000 MSP | $25 |
| 4,000 MSP | $50 |
How to convert Microsoft Points manually
For a historical U.S. estimate:
MSP ÷ 80 = approximate U.S. dollars
To reverse the calculation:
U.S. dollars × 80 = approximate MSP
Examples:
- 200 MSP ÷ 80 = $2.50
- 800 MSP ÷ 80 = $10
- 1,200 MSP ÷ 80 = $15
- 2,000 MSP ÷ 80 = $25
Display money to two decimal places, but do not imply false precision. The formula describes the commonly used historical U.S. relationship between marketplace prices and points.

What were Microsoft Points?
Microsoft Points—also called MSP, MS Points, or Xbox Live Points—were a prepaid digital currency used mainly during the Xbox 360 era. Players used them for Xbox Live Arcade games, downloadable games, add-ons, downloadable content, Avatar items, and themes. They were also associated with Zune-era music and video purchases in markets where those services were available.
The historical third-party MS Points Calculator app was described as converting points into currencies including U.S. dollars, Canadian dollars, British pounds, euros, Australian dollars, Indian rupees, Japanese yen, Mexican pesos, Norwegian kroner, Singapore dollars, Swedish krona, and Taiwan dollars. Its listing also mentioned Xbox avatar and gamertag personalization.
Why 80 MSP was approximately $1
Microsoft used points instead of displaying direct currency prices across parts of its digital storefront. Standardized point increments made prepaid cards and fixed-denomination codes easier to sell, while allowing marketplace pricing to be mapped to local markets.

The 80-to-$1 relationship is best understood as a historical U.S. pricing convention. It was not necessarily the price a customer paid to acquire the points. A card could have been discounted, sold at a markup, included in a promotion, or affected by taxes and retailer pricing.
Regional and historical limitations
Do not automatically treat every 80 MSP as one unit of every currency. Regional storefronts, point-card denominations, taxes, promotions, and local pricing could change the effective value.
For a more careful historical estimate:
- Identify the original marketplace country or region.
- Record the MSP amount shown on the receipt, listing, or card.
- Estimate the original local-currency value using the region’s historical pricing convention.
- Keep the original marketplace value separate from what you paid for the card.
Converting MSP into today’s exchange rate answers a different question. It estimates a modern currency equivalent, not what the Xbox purchase cost in its original market. Similarly, an inflation adjustment would estimate purchasing power rather than the original store price.

Are Microsoft Points still used?
No. Microsoft transitioned Xbox accounts from Microsoft Points to local currency during the Xbox 360 era. The old Xbox Points FAQ described how purchased cards and codes were handled during that migration, but that was a transition policy—not a current general-purpose redemption system.

Is the original MS Points Calculator app still available?
The calculator was a real historical app, but its current availability, compatibility, Marketplace listing, and gamertag integration should not be assumed. A 2011 announcement described version 1.4 as free at that time, while a later listing reported a $1.29 price; both are historical claims, not current pricing.

For present-day readers, the arithmetic is more dependable than trying to recover the original app. The app was third-party software and should not be treated as an official Microsoft exchange-rate service.

Microsoft Points and Microsoft Rewards points are different systems. If you are looking at points earned through Bing, Xbox activity, or Microsoft Store activities, the historical 80-MSP-per-dollar formula does not apply.

| Era | Xbox 360 and older Microsoft marketplaces | Current rewards program |
| Main function | Purchase digital content | Earn and redeem rewards |
| Fixed 80-per-dollar formula | Historical U.S. approximation | Not applicable |
| Value | Historically tied to marketplace pricing | Varies by market, Rewards level, and redemption |
| Current status | Discontinued | Current, subject to program terms |

What to do with an old Microsoft Points card or code
- Do not assume it is redeemable. An old code may be subject to account, region, service, or validity restrictions.
- Do not assume a foreign code works. Regional compatibility claims found in old forum discussions are not reliable current policy.
- Do not buy old codes as an investment. Their historical face value does not guarantee present redemption or resale value.
- Use official support. If you already own a code, check Microsoft/Xbox support for the account’s country and storefront.
- Protect the code. Do not publish it or send it to an unverified third party.
A historical discussion on Whirlpool illustrates why anecdotal advice about foreign codes and old redemption practices should not be treated as current Microsoft policy.
Bottom line
For a quick historical U.S. calculation, divide Microsoft Points by 80: 800 MSP was approximately $10, and 1,600 MSP was approximately $20. Microsoft Points are no longer a current currency, and the formula does not apply to Microsoft Rewards points, modern Xbox prices, or every international market.
