MrBeast, whose real name is Jimmy Donaldson, said he was borrowing money and had “negative money right now.” That was his description of having little personal cash while much of his reported wealth is tied to his business—not a verified statement that his bank balance or total wealth is literally negative. Fortune reported a $2.6 billion net-worth estimate and a $5 billion valuation for Beast Industries, a private company. Neither figure establishes how much cash Donaldson has available.
What MrBeast said about having no money
In a Wall Street Journal interview titled “MrBeast Shares How He Built a $5B Business Creating YouTube Videos”, Donaldson discussed the gap between his reported wealth and the money he keeps for personal use. Fortune quoted him saying, “I’m borrowing money. That’s how little money I have,” and, “I have negative money right now.”

Those are Donaldson’s own characterizations, reported by Fortune from the interview—not figures confirmed by a bank statement or audited personal financial disclosure. Fortune reported that he said he keeps less than $1 million for himself, but that is also an attributed claim, not a verified account balance.

Net worth and cash in a bank account measure different things. Net worth is generally an estimate of assets minus liabilities. Assets can include ownership in a business; cash is the portion that is readily available to spend. A large estimated stake in a company does not mean an owner can immediately withdraw an equivalent amount from a bank.

Fortune described Donaldson as owning more than half of Beast Industries and reported a $5 billion company valuation. It estimated his net worth at $2.6 billion. Beast Industries is private, according to Fortune’s company profile, so the reported valuation is not a public share price or a guaranteed amount he could receive by selling his stake. The cited coverage does not disclose the ownership terms, a complete list of his assets and liabilities, or the method used to calculate the net-worth estimate.
What the $2 billion headline figure does—and does not—show
The title’s $2 billion figure is a rounded headline amount, not a verified bank balance or an exact current net worth. Fortune’s 2026 report used a $2.6 billion estimate; Quartz also described Donaldson as having a $2.6 billion net worth while reporting his distinction between wealth “on paper” and money in his bank account. Estimates can differ by source and date, and neither amount is a disclosure of personal cash.

Quartz separately reported his estimate that the company would spend roughly $250 million on content. These are reported statements and spending expectations, not audited figures for his personal spending or business accounts.
