Yes. Smaller satellite operators can access public space situational awareness (SSA) data and spaceflight-safety services, including NOAA’s U.S. civil Traffic Coordination System for Space (TraCSS) and Europe’s EU Space Surveillance and Tracking (EU SST) services. Commercial providers also offer SSA data and analysis. Availability does not mean every service offers the same orbital coverage, alert timing, analysis, or operational assurance; operators should match a service to their mission and verify its current terms.
What SSA services can a smaller operator access?
NOAA’s civil TraCSS service
NOAA’s Office of Space Commerce (OSC) is developing TraCSS to provide basic SSA data and spaceflight-safety services to civil and private operators. OSC reports that owner/operator registration is open and says users can register through the TraCSS webpage. NOAA also reports that TraCSS is initially operating alongside Space-Track.org rather than replacing it immediately.

As of August 2026, OSC reported 82 pilot user organizations comprising more than 11,370 satellites, along with 10 National Government Accounts. Those figures show substantial pilot participation, not universal access or proof that every planned feature is in production. NOAA’s TraCSS FAQ says registration is being accepted and describes an anticipated 2026 production release; it also says the department is addressing known production-environment risks before publishing an updated integrated schedule. Check the current onboarding and operating status directly rather than treating pilot participation as confirmation of full production readiness.

Space-Track.org and the authoritative catalog
NOAA says TraCSS and Space-Track.org initially run in parallel. Its FAQ says the U.S. military will continue monitoring objects and maintaining the authoritative object catalog while the civil transition proceeds. The FAQ does not say Space-Track.org is shutting down immediately.

Europe’s public EU SST services
EU SST is another public-service option. An OSC comparison study completed in August 2024 said the United States and European Union were committed to providing SSA services to spacecraft operators around the world free of charge. The study also cautioned that the systems and their offerings continue to evolve, so its comparison is a dated reference rather than a guarantee of current features or eligibility. See OSC’s technical comparison of EU SST and TraCSS.
Commercial data and analysis
Commercial SSA providers can offer data, analytics, or other services in addition to public sources. A 2023 U.S. Government Accountability Office report describes a growing sector that uses ground-based sensors and sells data and licenses; commercial data may help fill geographic sensor-coverage gaps and provide unclassified information that can be shared. NOAA’s 2022 pilot evaluated commercial tracking data, analysis, and operator feedback for space traffic coordination, including capabilities related to medium Earth orbit (MEO) and geostationary orbit (GEO). These government reports establish the commercial-service category and earlier evaluations, not today’s vendor-by-vendor prices, signup terms, or comparable performance commitments. See the GAO report and NOAA’s pilot announcement.

Is space tracking data free, or will an operator have to pay?
There are public-service options with no direct user fee: the OSC’s August 2024 comparison described U.S. and EU public SSA services as free of charge to spacecraft operators around the world. That statement concerns public services and is dated; confirm current access terms with the relevant service. Free access also does not eliminate possible costs for staff time, system integration, or supplementary commercial services. The sources cited here do not establish current comparable prices for commercial providers, so request pricing and licensing terms from each provider rather than assuming a standard rate.
How to choose a service for your spacecraft
Before relying on a service, compare the following mission-specific details. Public sources do not provide a common performance table across TraCSS, EU SST, and commercial providers, so obtain the operational particulars from the service itself.

- NO CELL PHONE OR SERVICE-NO PROBLEM: With the Tracking feature Gen4 can transmit location updates when you are moving and when you stop; Keep one in your child's backpack for the walk home
- GLOBALSTAR SATELLITE & SPOT products use GPS to determine location and transmit GPS coordinates to others; SPOT users can notify friends, family or emergency rescue their exact GPS coordinates
- WHAT'S IN THE BOX: SPOT Gen4 device, Strap and Carabiner, USB Cable, Batteries and quick start guide; Subscription required; Two service plans available
- PURCHASE, ACTIVATE, EXPLORE: Grab a Spot Gen4; Activate by selecting your service plan; Get out there and explore the world with peace of mind
- Orbit and coverage: Confirm support for your regime—LEO, MEO, or GEO—and ask what objects and sensor geographies are covered. GAO has noted gaps in global sensor distribution and limited sensor capability for deep-space objects; coverage should not be assumed uniform.
- What the service actually does: Distinguish orbital or catalog data from routine conjunction screening, conjunction data messages, risk assessment, maneuver support, and operator-facing decision support. A provider’s data feed is not necessarily a complete collision-avoidance service.
- Timeliness and workflow fit: Ask about update and notification cadence, support during time-sensitive events, and how alerts or data can be integrated into your mission process. The reviewed public sources do not establish a shared latency or service-level benchmark.
- Access and data rights: Verify registration criteria, permitted uses, disclosure or sharing rights, and restrictions on sensitive or proprietary operator information. GAO discusses licensing in the commercial market; OSC’s coordination vision promotes information sharing while recognizing that sensitive or proprietary information may need protection.
- Interoperability: Check whether the service’s formats work with your systems and whether it supports relevant common standards. OSC identifies CCSDS standards as widely adopted in the SSA community and freely available. Its March 2024 Global Space Situational Awareness Coordination Vision quotes the UN guideline encouraging common, internationally recognized standards for sharing orbital information.
- Assurance and responsibility: Establish what you must validate independently and what the provider disclaims. NOAA’s TraCSS FAQ says the service is provided “as is,” without warranties that its data will be error-free or access uninterrupted.
- Total operating cost: Include any service charge as well as the internal work of integration, monitoring, and response. The available evidence does not support a current, like-for-like commercial price comparison.
Can a small operator use public alerts as a collision-prevention guarantee?
No. SSA data and conjunction services are inputs to operational decision-making, not a guarantee that a collision will be prevented. NOAA explicitly disclaims warranties of error-free TraCSS data and uninterrupted access. NOAA also describes the U.S. military as continuing to maintain the authoritative object catalog and national-security analysis. Operators should understand service limitations and continuity, and retain appropriate independent validation and response procedures for their mission.
OSC publishes a free conjunction-assessment verification dataset with an answer key under CC0. It can help teams explore or test algorithms, but NOAA says it is not comprehensive and is not for live operations or formal system certification or validation. It is a test resource, not an operational alert feed.
