The company said it would use the proceeds to advance MTX-101 toward first-in-human testing and expand its pipeline. The announcement describes a historical financing round, not a current raise.
What the $25 million financing covered
Mozart Therapeutics said the extension would fund development of MTX-101 and support expansion of its research pipeline. Its June 2023 announcement said the company had raised $80 million in total after the extension. These figures describe company financing, not spending already completed or clinical results.
New participants in the extension were Pfizer Ventures, AbbVie Ventures, Ono Venture Investment and UPMC Enterprises. They joined existing investors including ARCH Venture Partners, Sofinnova Partners, Eli Lilly & Company, MRL Ventures Fund, Leaps by Bayer, Altitude Life Science Ventures and Alexandria Venture Investments. Mozart Therapeutics’ June 7, 2023 announcement lists the financing and investors.
What MTX-101 is designed to do
MTX-101 is Mozart’s investigational bispecific autoimmune checkpoint inhibitor. The company says it targets CD8 and KIR2DL, with the proposed aim of restoring the cytolytic function of regulatory CD8 T cells and selectively eliminating pathogenic immune cells. This is a proposed mechanism, not proof that the candidate works in people or improves health outcomes.

Mozart’s broader approach centers on a regulatory CD8 T-cell network that the company hopes to modulate to restore immune balance in autoimmune and inflammatory diseases. UPMC’s 2023 account described the lead program as focused on autoimmune-mediated gastrointestinal diseases. UPMC’s investor account provides that framing.
Which diseases were in the initial focus
Contemporaneous accounts named celiac disease, Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis among the gastrointestinal conditions Mozart was interested in addressing. These were development areas, not approved uses for MTX-101. The company’s financing announcement does not establish that the candidate is effective for any of these conditions.

Was MTX-101 approved or in trials?
MTX-101 was an investigational candidate in the June 2023 announcement, not an approved medicine. Mozart then forecast an investigational new drug application and a Phase 1 trial beginning in early 2024. That was a forecast made in 2023; the sources cited here do not verify whether those milestones occurred or establish the candidate’s clinical status as of October 8, 2026. A forecast should not be treated as confirmation that a trial began.

The $25 million extension indicates that investors supplied additional capital to support Mozart’s stated development plans. It does not establish clinical safety, efficacy, regulatory approval, or the availability of MTX-101 to patients. Likewise, investor participation alone does not demonstrate a commercial partnership or an offer to collaborate.
