There is no evidence-backed, apples-to-apples ranking of the 10 most reliable pickup trucks. The strongest current comparisons measure different things: Consumer Reports (CR) predicts reliability for specific configurations, J.D. Power counts owner-reported problems after three years, and CARFAX analyzes repair records for used trucks. Here are the CR configurations and figures available for comparison, plus what the other studies can—and cannot—tell you.
Ten pickup configurations in Consumer Reports’ 2026 guide
CR’s Buying Guide 2026, published in 2025, lists predicted-reliability ratings for specific pickup configurations. The table includes the four midsize and six full-size entries identified in the guide’s pickup comparison. These are not a verified top 10 across the entire truck market, nor are the ratings failure rates or percentages. A rating belongs to the listed engine configuration, not automatically to every trim, model year, or generation of that truck.
| Class | Truck and configuration | CR predicted-reliability rating |
|---|---|---|
| Midsize | Honda Ridgeline 3.5L | 79 |
| Midsize | Nissan Frontier 3.8L | 50 |
| Midsize | Chevrolet Colorado 2.7T | 46 |
| Midsize | Toyota Tacoma 2.4T | 45 |
| Full-size | Ram 1500 3.0T | 68 |
| Full-size | Ford F-150 2.7T | 67 |
| Full-size | Chevrolet Silverado 1500 5.3L | 63 |
| Full-size | Chevrolet Silverado 1500 3.0D | 63 |
| Full-size | Toyota Tundra 3.4T | 54 |
| Full-size | Ford F-150 Hybrid 3.5T+H | 47 |
The abbreviations retain the guide’s configuration labels: T denotes a turbocharged engine, D a diesel, and H a hybrid system. Within these listed entries, the Ridgeline has the highest CR predicted-reliability rating. That observation is limited to this guide’s configurations; it does not establish that the Ridgeline is the most reliable pickup overall or that every example will perform similarly.
What the reliability studies measure
A reliability result is useful only when its measure, vehicle cohort, and time window fit the question you are asking. These three sources cannot be combined into one score: their methods and populations differ.

Consumer Reports: predicted reliability by configuration
CR’s 2026 guide gives predicted-reliability ratings for the configurations listed above. It is a prediction, not a count of failures observed over a stated ownership period. Keep the engine and model-year context in view when using a rating to narrow a new-truck search, and check the rating for the exact configuration you are considering.
J.D. Power: problems reported by three-year owners
J.D. Power’s 2026 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study (VDS), released February 12, 2026, surveyed 33,268 original owners of 2023 model-year vehicles after three years of ownership. The study reported an industry average of 204 problems per 100 vehicles. J.D. Power explains, “A lower score indicates higher vehicle quality.” That statement refers to its PP100 problem-count measure: fewer reported problems are better. The study named the Toyota Tacoma a model-level award recipient, but that result is tied to the studied cohort; it does not show that every Tacoma generation, engine, or current model year is the most reliable pickup.

CARFAX: unexpected repairs in maintenance records
In its August 17, 2026 article, Most Reliable Pickup Trucks in 2026, CARFAX describes a five-year unexpected-repair-likelihood analysis focused on model years 2019–2023 and based on maintenance records. It also considers how many vehicles from a model line remain on the road over a longer period. These record-based and survival measures add context for used-truck shoppers, but they are not directly comparable with CR’s predictions or J.D. Power’s three-year owner survey.
How to use the figures when choosing a truck
Start with the job and truck class
Choose the class that fits your regular use before comparing reliability results. A midsize truck and a full-size truck are not interchangeable simply because both appear in a reliability guide. Towing, payload, parking, and operating costs can change which vehicle is practical for your situation. Reliability ratings do not establish that a truck has the capacity or equipment your workload requires.

Match the rating to the exact powertrain
Do not transfer a rating across engines just because the model name is the same. CR reports separate entries for the F-150’s 2.7T and 3.5T+H configurations, and separate Silverado 1500 entries for the 5.3L and 3.0D. A different engine, hybrid system, trim, or model year may not have the same result.
Use the right evidence for new and used trucks
- Shopping new: Treat a predicted-reliability rating as one input for the specific configuration, not a guarantee about an individual vehicle.
- Shopping used: A model-level result cannot tell you whether a particular truck was maintained well or has existing damage. Review its maintenance and vehicle-history records, and arrange an independent inspection before buying.
- Comparing study results: Keep the source, metric, vehicle years, and observation window attached to every number. Do not average these ratings or treat their scales as equivalent.
Why a definitive top-10 ranking would mislead
The available results do not establish ten winners under one common dataset and method. The CR figures cover selected configurations; J.D. Power’s Tacoma award reflects a three-year study of 2023 vehicles; and CARFAX’s repair-likelihood analysis focuses on records for 2019–2023 model years. Each can answer a different part of the reliability question, but none supports an unqualified claim that these are the 10 absolute best pickups.

For a used example, investigate the individual vehicle rather than relying on its model’s reputation or ranking.
