If by “most common cars” you mean the new vehicles Americans bought most often, the 2025 list is dominated by pickup trucks and SUVs—not sedans. The Ford F-Series led the market by a wide margin, while the Toyota RAV4 was the best-selling non-pickup and the Toyota Camry remained the country’s top-selling sedan.
One important correction to the title: the figures below cover the complete period from January 1 through December 31, 2025, not only part of the year. The ranking uses Kelley Blue Book/Cox Automotive data as reported by Automotive News. Because manufacturers group related vehicles differently, some totals are not directly comparable with other published rankings.

1. Ford F-Series: 828,832 sales
The Ford F-Series was America’s best-selling vehicle line in 2025, selling more than 828,000 units. That number represents a family of trucks rather than one narrowly defined model. It combines the F-150, F-150 Lightning, F-250, F-350 and larger F-Series vehicles.

For a car shopper, that distinction matters. An F-150 and an F-350 can have very different purchase prices, fuel costs, insurance premiums and towing capabilities, even though both contribute to the same sales total.
2. Chevrolet Silverado: 580,368 sales
The Silverado ranked second. Its reported total combines the Silverado 1500, Silverado 2500, Silverado 3500 and Silverado EV. The mechanically related GMC Sierra is not included in this number; it appears separately at No. 6.
That separate counting makes the Chevrolet and GMC rankings look more distinct than the underlying product relationship might suggest. Buyers comparing full-size trucks should evaluate the specific trim, engine and financing offer rather than assuming every Silverado or Sierra has the same ownership cost.
3. Toyota RAV4: 479,288 sales
The RAV4 was the best-selling vehicle in the ranking that was neither a pickup nor a truck line. Toyota’s total includes gasoline, hybrid and plug-in-hybrid versions.

The Honda CR-V remained one of the country’s most popular compact SUVs, with 403,768 sales. The total includes the CR-V family, including hybrid versions.

Like the RAV4, the CR-V’s ranking does not mean every version costs the same to buy or operate. A hybrid may carry a different upfront price than a gas model, and trim-level differences can affect insurance and financing costs. The sales figure is a popularity measure, not a recommendation that one version is automatically the best financial choice.
5. Ram Truck: 374,059 sales
“Ram Truck” is a combined nameplate covering the Ram 1500, 2500, 3500 and heavier-duty trucks. The 374,059-unit total therefore represents a range of vehicles with widely different capabilities and budgets.

Anyone shopping this line should first decide how much towing and payload capacity they actually need. Choosing a heavy-duty truck for occasional errands can expose a household to unnecessary purchase, fuel, tire and maintenance costs. A lighter-duty model may be financially more sensible when the truck’s main job is commuting or light hauling.
6. GMC Sierra: 356,218 sales
The GMC Sierra ranked sixth with 356,218 sales. The figure includes the Sierra 1500 and heavy-duty versions and is counted separately from Chevrolet Silverado sales.
The Sierra and Silverado share many underlying components, but their pricing, equipment levels and dealer incentives can differ. For buyers focused on total cost, comparing both brands on the same day can reveal differences in transaction price and financing—not just differences in badges or styling.
7. Chevrolet Equinox: 332,301 sales
The Chevrolet Equinox posted 332,301 sales and benefited from the redesigned 2025 model. This reported figure covers the gasoline Equinox line.

Some industry lists show a different Equinox number because they treat the Equinox EV separately or exclude it from the gasoline nameplate total. That is one reason a shopper may find apparently conflicting “best-selling car” lists online.
8. Tesla Model Y: approximately 317,800 sales
The Tesla Model Y was the best-selling electric vehicle in the United States in 2025 and ranked eighth overall. Its reported total is approximately 317,800.
The number is an estimate because Tesla does not publish U.S. model-by-model sales in the same way most traditional automakers do. It should therefore be read as an industry estimate, not as a directly reported Tesla figure.
The Model Y was the only EV in this overall top 10. That does not mean electric vehicles are absent from the market; it means no other EV reached this particular sales threshold under the counting method used here.
9. Toyota Camry: 316,185 sales
The Camry was America’s best-selling traditional passenger car in 2025, with 316,185 sales. It was also the only sedan in this top 10.
The current U.S.-market Camry is sold as a hybrid-only model. Its presence near the top of a truck- and SUV-heavy ranking shows that sedans still have a substantial audience, particularly among buyers who prioritize a conventional car shape over maximum cargo height.

10. Toyota Tacoma: 274,638 sales
The Tacoma was the only midsize pickup in the top 10, selling 274,638 units. Hybrid Tacoma sales are included in the figure.
Its strong position is notable because the rest of the pickup entries are full-size or heavy-duty truck lines. A midsize truck can appeal to buyers who want an open bed and towing ability without choosing the largest available pickup, although the right financial choice still depends on purchase price, fuel use and how often the truck’s capabilities will be used.

What this list means for car buyers
“Best-selling” does not mean “best for your budget”
Sales rankings measure how many vehicles were sold. They do not account for your income, down payment, credit score, insurance quote, fuel costs or expected repairs. A popular truck can still be an expensive choice for a driver who does not need its capacity.
Vehicle lines may combine very different models
The Ford F-Series, Ram Truck and GMC Sierra totals include multiple sizes and configurations. The Silverado total also includes gasoline, heavy-duty and electric variants. Comparing one combined sales number with the price of one specific trim can lead to a misleading conclusion.
Check what each source counts
Different publications may report different totals for the same nameplate. For example, one ranking may include an electric derivative, while another may count it separately. Car and Driver lists the Silverado at 588,709, the Sierra at 348,222 and the Equinox at 274,356 under a method that excludes certain electric derivatives from those nameplate totals.
When using sales data to research a purchase, check the source’s methodology before comparing rankings. The difference may be accounting—not a sudden change in consumer demand.

How to use the ranking before buying
- Define the job. Decide whether you need a sedan, compact SUV, midsize pickup or full-size truck.
- Compare specific versions. Look at the exact trim, drivetrain and equipment rather than the entire nameplate’s sales total.
- Price the complete monthly cost. Include the payment, insurance, fuel or charging, maintenance, registration and likely tires.
- Get multiple quotes. Compare at least two dealers or lenders, particularly for high-volume models where inventory and incentives can vary.
- Test the financial assumption. If the vehicle’s main advantage is towing, cargo space or fuel economy, make sure you will use that feature often enough to justify its cost.
