At an October 1, 2026 Mortgage Banking Summit, 70% of executives who answered a live poll expected 30-year mortgage rates to be 7.5% or higher six months later. That points to an elevated-rate outlook for around April 2027—not a guarantee that rates will stay at 7.5% throughout 2027. The poll report does not disclose the number of respondents or how they were selected.
What the poll says—and when its outlook applies
HousingWire contributors Rick Roque and Jim Deitch reported the poll in an article published October 8, 2026. Asked about the 30-year mortgage rate six months after the October 1 summit, respondents gave a range of expectations:

| Expected rate | Share reported |
|---|---|
| Around 7.5% | 27% |
| Just below 8% | 25% |
| Above 8% | 18% |
| Roughly 7% | 31% |
| Back in the 6% range | 2% |
The three groups expecting at least 7.5% add up to 70%. HousingWire notes that totals may exceed 100% because of rounding. The poll’s six-month horizon points to roughly April 2027; it does not ask whether rates would remain at that level for the rest of the calendar year. HousingWire’s October 8 report does not provide a respondent count, sampling method, or respondent-level data, so the results should be read as the views of people polled at that event—not all mortgage executives.

How that expectation compares with published rate readings
A poll expectation, a current rate average, and a forecast are different kinds of evidence. The available comparisons give context for the poll, but they do not verify its specific prediction.

| Source and date | Figure | What it represents |
|---|---|---|
| Freddie Mac, October 8, 2026 | 7.40% for a 30-year fixed mortgage; 6.73% for a 15-year fixed mortgage | Reported average rates for that date, not a forecast. |
| ABA Economic Advisory Committee, September 2026 | Mortgage rates expected to remain above 6.8% over the next year | A committee outlook; it supports an expectation of elevated rates but does not specifically predict 7.5%. |
The Freddie Mac figures distinguish 30-year and 15-year fixed loans, while the poll asks about the 30-year rate. The ABA forecast has a one-year horizon, rather than the poll’s six months. Neither should be treated as interchangeable with the summit responses.
What this could mean for a homebuyer
The poll may be useful as a signal of what some industry participants anticipated in October 2026, but it cannot tell an individual buyer what rate they will qualify for. A borrower’s offered rate can depend on factors such as credit profile, down payment, loan type, lender, and market conditions when they apply. The poll does not establish an individual rate or a future market outcome.

- If you are planning a purchase, test your budget at more than one rate rather than relying on 7.5% as a certainty. Include taxes, insurance, mortgage insurance if applicable, and other housing costs.
- Compare written loan estimates when you are ready to apply. A broad average or industry poll is not a substitute for a quote based on your circumstances.
- If timing is flexible, weigh the cost of waiting against your housing needs and the possibility that rates could move in either direction. The poll alone cannot resolve that decision.
What it suggests about mortgage lenders
Roque and Deitch use the poll to discuss lender economics, including nearly flat mortgage-origination projections for 2026 and 2027 that they attribute to MBA forecasts. They argue that lenders may need to reduce operating costs or pursue strategic combinations, and point to technology, digital closing, and voice AI as possible efficiency tools. These are the authors’ business analysis, not demonstrated results or a consensus guarantee that a particular approach will work.
