These were distinct developments, and the reports do not establish a complete tally of Iowa agriculture-related job losses.
John Deere’s Ottumwa plant planned to cut about 75 jobs
A report republished by Agriculture.com, originally published by Farmdoc, said a recent WARN notice covered approximately 75 workers at John Deere’s Ottumwa plant—about 13% of the plant workforce. The reported effective date was February 7, 2025. The worker count, percentage and date are the article’s account of that notice.
The article described the Ottumwa announcement as Deere’s 15th announced layoff over the prior year, attributing that characterization to Des Moines Register reporter Kevin Baskins. That is an attributed count of announced layoffs, not an independently established total of Iowa job losses.
Bridgestone-Firestone offered buyouts in Des Moines
The same article reported that Bridgestone-Firestone was offering buyouts at its agricultural-tire plant in Des Moines. A buyout offer is not the same as a reported number of completed layoffs, and the article did not give a count of workers accepting offers.

Bridgestone’s prepared statement, quoted in the article, said: “Bridgestone regularly evaluates all aspects of its business to ensure we remain competitive and that resources are allocated in a manner that best supports our business strategy.” A later Associated Press report described capacity and workforce reductions at the facility amid broader company changes. Those later details should not be read as if they were all specified in the January article.
How to read the reports and WARN notices
Layoff announcements, buyout offers and formal WARN notices describe different things. Iowa Workforce Development explains the notice rules and maintains an Iowa WARN guidance and log. Its guidance says federal WARN generally requires employers with 100 or more employees to provide 60 calendar days’ written notice for covered plant closings or mass layoffs. Iowa’s law applies to employers with 25 or more employees and calls for 30 calendar days’ advance notice. The thresholds alone do not determine whether a particular event is covered.

- A news report can cover an announcement or buyout offer that is not equivalent to a completed layoff.
- Compare reports by employer, facility, announcement or notice date, approximate worker count, effective date and source type.
The January article refers to a recent Ottumwa WARN notice, but the available reporting does not independently match it to a specific entry in the state log. The reported figures should therefore remain attributed to the article’s account.
Other Iowa cuts were reported separately
KCCI separately reported that Landus Cooperative cut around 10% of its Iowa workforce in January 2025 as part of a company overhaul that included plans to introduce AI technology on farms. That is separate context; it should not be added to the Deere or Bridgestone figures as though the reports constituted one consistent statewide tally.

What affected workers can check
Workers seeking event-specific information can consult Iowa Workforce Development’s WARN guidance and log, and confirm details with their employer or representative. A state WARN record addresses covered notices; it does not by itself establish an individual worker’s eligibility for benefits or other assistance.
