Money Electric: The Bitcoin Mystery is a 2024 HBO documentary about Bitcoin’s origins and the identity of its pseudonymous creator, Satoshi Nakamoto. It points to Bitcoin developer Peter Todd—but that is a disputed allegation, not a proven identification. Todd denied being Satoshi, and reporting on the film describes its case as circumstantial.
What is Money Electric: The Bitcoin Mystery?
Directed and produced by Cullen Hoback, Money Electric: The Bitcoin Mystery debuted on HBO on October 8, 2024. Warner Bros. Discovery described it as an investigation into Bitcoin’s origins, Satoshi Nakamoto’s identity and the influence attached to that identity. That is the studio’s promotional framing, not an independent assessment of the film’s conclusions. Warner Bros. Discovery’s announcement
Catalog listings do not agree on the runtime: Rotten Tomatoes lists 1 hour 40 minutes, while Apple TV’s US listing gives 1 hour 35 minutes. Apple’s page identifies Hoback as director and writer and lists English audio and English and Latin American Spanish SDH subtitles. Those are catalog details for that listing, not guarantees for every version or territory. Rotten Tomatoes · Apple TV (US)
Who does the documentary say Satoshi Nakamoto is?
The film’s reported conclusion points to Peter Todd, a Bitcoin developer. Axios says Hoback builds the case around a sequence of early Bitcoin forum posts, a leaked email chain with uncertain provenance, and Todd’s sarcastic remarks on camera. Axios characterizes the evidence as highly circumstantial and says the film offers no “smoking gun.” Axios’s account of the film

Todd denied the claim. In an email to TIME, he wrote, “I’m not Satoshi,” according to the publication. TIME also reported that four early Bitcoiners it interviewed were skeptical that Todd was Bitcoin’s creator. TIME’s report
Does the film prove Todd is Satoshi?
No. The evidence described in contemporaneous coverage supports presenting Todd as the film’s proposed answer, not as an established identification. A sequence of forum posts can prompt questions about who wrote them, but chronology or resemblance alone does not prove authorship. Leaked correspondence is only as persuasive as its provenance and context, and a sarcastic on-camera remark is not reliable proof of identity. Axios reports that the email chain’s provenance was uncertain and describes the overall case as circumstantial.

The distinction matters because Satoshi Nakamoto is a pseudonym: identifying the person behind it requires evidence that connects a real person to the creation and use of that identity. The original Bitcoin whitepaper explains the system’s peer-to-peer electronic-cash design; it is a technical document, not proof of who used the pseudonym. Why does Satoshi’s identity matter financially?
Bitcoin’s pseudonymous creator is associated with a large number of coins, so a credible identity claim can prompt questions about control of those assets and possible market effects. In its October 2024 coverage, Axios cited roughly 1 million coins associated with Satoshi’s wallets and noted that they had remained dormant. That is a time-specific estimate and status reported at the time, not a current wallet balance or evidence that Todd controls those coins. Axios also reported that Bitcoin’s price hardly moved immediately after the documentary aired; that describes the immediate reaction in October 2024, not subsequent performance.
