Mobile gaming is the biggest revenue platform in the cited comparisons. But the claim that PC makes more than console is tied to a particular historical dataset: Visual Capitalist’s 2022 figures put PC ahead, while Newzoo’s 2023 figures put console ahead. The platform ranking changes with the year and the measurement.
Which gaming platform makes the most revenue?
Mobile leads in both cited snapshots. Visual Capitalist’s 2022 chart, using data from UK-based market intelligence firm Pelham Smithers, puts mobile game revenue at $101 billion, PC at $45 billion, and console at $30 billion. Values are rounded to the nearest billion, and the historical series is adjusted for inflation. The chart reports more than $180 billion in total video-game-industry revenue for 2022 and says mobile has accounted for more than half of industry revenue since 2019. Visual Capitalist’s platform-revenue chart provides the figures and context.
That makes mobile the “real winner” in the older PC-versus-console headline, but it does not mean the PC-over-console result holds in every year or dataset.
Does PC gaming make more money than console gaming?
It depends on the year and the revenue measure. The cited 2022 chart has PC ahead of console by $15 billion. In contrast, a Newzoo PC and Console Gaming Report excerpt published in January 2024 puts 2023 PC game revenue at $40.4 billion and console game revenue at $53.1 billion. Newzoo reported year-over-year growth of 3.9% for PC and 1.7% for console in that dataset. The excerpt is reproduced by Visual Capitalist.

These figures do not establish a precise year-over-year change from 2022 to 2023: they come from different providers and have different stated scopes. The 2023 report’s definition includes physical and digital full-game copies, in-game spending, and subscriptions such as Xbox Game Pass. It excludes taxes, secondhand and secondary-market spending, advertising, console and peripheral hardware, B2B services, and online gambling or betting. It separately states that mobile revenue excludes advertising. The definitions and exclusions matter when comparing any figures across reports.
What do the reported 2026 figures say?
A Wccftech report dated August 25, 2026, describing Newzoo’s 2026 forecast, estimates $121.1 billion in mobile game revenue, $46.9 billion in console revenue, and $45.9 billion in PC revenue. These are forecasts, not final annual actuals, and the figures are reported by Wccftech rather than directly here from Newzoo. In that forecast, mobile remains far ahead, while console is slightly above PC. Wccftech’s report on the Newzoo forecast gives those estimates.

The forecast is another reason not to turn the older PC-over-console comparison into a timeless claim. It is also not directly interchangeable with the 2022 historical chart: a forecast and a historical series should not be treated as the same kind of measurement.
Why the platform rankings need careful comparison
“Gaming revenue” can refer to different spending categories. Before comparing platform totals, check the year, whether figures are actuals or forecasts, how each platform is defined, whether values are inflation-adjusted, and which spending is included or excluded. Hardware is a particularly important distinction: the 2023 Newzoo PC and console measure excludes console and peripheral hardware, so it is about game-related revenue rather than the sale of the machines themselves.

Spending on in-game purchases and subscriptions helps describe how games are monetized, but the cited material does not establish that any particular business model caused mobile’s lead or the changing PC-console order. Nor does it show that mobile is taking revenue directly away from consoles.

- For 2022: the cited inflation-adjusted chart reports PC revenue above console revenue, with mobile well ahead of both.
- For 2023: the cited Newzoo report excerpt reports console revenue above PC revenue.
- For 2026: Newzoo’s forecast, as reported by Wccftech, places mobile first and console narrowly ahead of PC; these are estimates, not final results.
The headline’s PC-versus-console statement is therefore a dated comparison, not a reliable all-years rule. Across these sources, mobile is the consistent leader, while the ordering of PC and console depends on the dataset and date.
