Moana 2 passed $1 billion in worldwide box-office receipts in January 2025, after earning $906 million through December 31, 2024. It was the third film released in 2024 to cross the milestone, following Inside Out 2 and Deadpool & Wolverine.
When did Moana 2 pass $1 billion?
Disney reported that the animated sequel had earned $906 million worldwide through December 31, 2024: $404 million in domestic receipts and $502 million internationally. The studio said it was on track to pass $1 billion. Disney’s January 2, 2025 year-end report therefore places the film below the milestone at the close of 2024.

TheWrap reported on January 19, 2025 that the film had crossed $1 billion after adding $13.9 million worldwide that weekend. So “third blockbuster of 2024” refers to the release year of the film, not the calendar date it reached the billion-dollar mark.

What is Moana 2‘s current box-office total?
Box Office Mojo’s current title page lists a worldwide gross of $1,059,242,164, divided into $460,405,297 domestic and $598,836,867 international. That later cumulative total differs from Disney’s $906 million year-end snapshot because the measurements cover different dates. It is not the amount the film earned specifically during 2024.
How big was the film’s Thanksgiving opening?
Disney’s year-end recap described Moana 2 as having the highest-grossing five-day domestic industry opening at the time and the highest opening for Walt Disney Animation Studios. These are opening-period records in Disney’s framing, distinct from the later worldwide billion-dollar milestone. Disney’s year-end report provides the studio’s account.

How did the sequel perform on Disney+?
Disney reported 27.3 million global views for Moana 2 during its first five days streaming on Disney+. That is a five-day launch figure, not a lifetime streaming total. In the same release, Disney separately said the original Moana had been streamed for 1.4 billion hours. For that original-film measure, Disney cited Nielsen U.S. National Television panel viewing minutes among Persons 2+ from January 1 through December 29, 2024; it is a U.S. measurement, not a global one. Disney’s streaming announcement reports both figures.

Disney’s fiscal 2024 third-quarter investor presentation said the number of dedicated Moana merchandise SKUs had doubled since the sequel was announced. SKU count refers to the range of dedicated merchandise items, not the number sold or the revenue they generated. The presentation does not establish a particular product, retailer, or current inventory. Disney’s FY2024 third-quarter earnings presentation is the source for the statement.
