What the “Wirkin” was—and what it wasn’t
“Wirkin” was a nickname for a Birkin-inspired handbag offered on Walmart’s website through third-party Marketplace sellers. The Associated Press identified a $78 Kamugo item and other suppliers, including BESTSPR, YMTQ, and Judy. Kiplinger described a Kamugo listing under the name “Kamugo Genuine Leather Handbag Purse for Women,” with versions priced from $78 to $102 in the coverage it reviewed. These bags were lookalikes, not Hermès Birkins. The AP reported that Hermès Executive Chairman Axel Dumas called making a copy “quite detestable,” while also acknowledging differences in quality and saying it was touching that people wanted the Birkin style. Whether a particular lookalike raises a legal issue depends on its specific design, claims, rights, and the possibility of consumer confusion; the word “dupe” alone does not settle that question.
Amazon alternative to start with: the Dasein Women’s Tote Bag
USA TODAY reported that the Dasein Women’s Tote Bag had been restocked on Amazon on August 14, 2026. The coverage described a structured top-handle satchel with a removable shoulder strap and multiple pockets and organizational compartments. How to tell whether a bag will carry your essentials
Use the live listing—not the silhouette or the word “tote”—to decide whether a candidate suits your routine. Before ordering, check:
- Interior dimensions and capacity: Compare the listed measurements with the largest items you plan to carry. If capacity is not stated, do not assume a diaper, bottle, tablet, or other item will fit.

The sold-out claim is historical, not a verified status check for October 8, 2026. OregonLive reported in 2025 that the viral Walmart listing sold out within days and was no longer on Walmart’s site.
