The best-documented figures show Mike Tyson was reported to earn just under $21 million for his 1988 fight with Michael Spinks and $30 million for each of his two fights with Evander Holyfield. Those are reported gross purse or payday figures, not verified take-home amounts. The often-cited $22 million to $25 million for a planned 1990 Holyfield fight was conditional—and Tyson never earned it because he lost to Buster Douglas.
What are Mike Tyson’s biggest reported fight purses?
The available reporting supports several prominent figures, but not a reliable ranking of Tyson’s ten largest purses. The amounts below are not all the same kind of figure: one is a contemporary reported purse, two are later-reported paydays, and one is a conditional forecast for a fight that did not happen.

What Tyson was reported to earn against Michael Spinks
UPI reported on July 6, 1988, that Tyson would earn just under $21 million for knocking out Spinks in 91 seconds. The same report put the fight’s gross at more than $70 million. The event gross and Tyson’s reported purse are different measures: the gross describes the event’s revenue, not the amount paid to Tyson or the amount he retained. UPI’s contemporary report does not reconcile the purse into Tyson’s net income after expenses and other payments.
Why the 1990 Holyfield figure was not a Tyson payday
A January 16, 1990, report in the Tropic Times said Tyson was expected to earn between $22 million and $25 million for a planned fight with Holyfield, but only if he first beat Buster Douglas. Tyson lost to Douglas, so the proposed Holyfield bout did not happen on those terms and the forecast should not be counted as money Tyson earned. The Tropic Times report archived by GovInfo is evidence of an expectation, not a paid purse.

What Tyson reportedly made in the 1996 and 1997 Holyfield fights
A CBS retrospective describes Tyson’s paydays for both Holyfield fights as $30 million each. Those are retrospective reported amounts, not a consistent commission accounting series that can be directly ranked against every other reported purse. CBS also describes fees and onward payments that reduced what Tyson ultimately kept. Nevada Athletic Commission executive director Marc Ratner put the distinction this way: “After we give him a check for $30 million, we don’t know where the money goes.” That quote concerns the reported Holyfield check; it does not establish Tyson’s net proceeds from every fight. Why a reported purse is not the same as take-home pay
A headline purse or payday is a gross figure. A boxer’s ultimate proceeds can differ after fees and other payments. The cited reports do not provide a complete, comparable breakdown of Tyson’s costs and net income for each bout, so the figures above should not be read as amounts deposited into his personal accounts.

Does Tyson have $400 million in career purses?
A 2024 CBS explainer attributed a $400 million career fight-purse estimate to Forbes. That is a career-wide estimate, not a bout-by-bout ledger or evidence that any particular ten fights rank highest. It also cannot be added to the individual figures above: it covers a different scope and does not reconcile each fight’s accounting. A dependable ranking would require ten amounts reported on a consistent basis—actual paid purses rather than projections, with comparable definitions of gross or net and clear sourcing for each bout. The available evidence here establishes only a small number of prominent figures, and they are not fully harmonized. Listing ten fights in order would imply a level of certainty the reported figures do not provide.
