Yes—musicians have built successful careers without relying on a major label, but “independent” can mean several things: releasing music through an artist-owned or independent label, self-releasing it, or returning to independent releases after a major-label deal. These ten examples show how different arrangements can work, and how artists reached listeners through mixtapes, online platforms, touring, merchandise, and direct fan relationships. They are examples, not a formula for guaranteed success.

What “without major labels” means in these examples

Independence is not one uniform contract status. It can mean owning a label, releasing through an independent label, distributing a project without record-company backing, or working independently after a major-label chapter. Some musicians below later signed major-label deals; their stories show a phase of independent success rather than careers that were always outside the major-label system.

The evidence here supports specific milestones—such as awards, chart positions, and documented release arrangements—not a ranking of earnings or proof that independence caused success. The examples are historical where noted; they do not establish every artist’s current label or distribution arrangements.

Ten musicians who found success through independent paths

1. Ani DiFranco: built an artist-owned label

DiFranco founded Righteous Babe Records in 1990. Her official biography describes her as one of the first artists to create her own label and says rejecting the major-label system gave her creative freedom. The significance is not just one self-released record: the label became the foundation for a long-running, self-directed career. Ani DiFranco’s official biography

2. Chance the Rapper: free mixtapes, streaming, touring, and merchandise

In a 2017 interview, Chance said he handed out free mixtapes in high school, put early music online, and chose not to sign with a label after meeting major companies. He described touring and merchandise as income sources: “I make money from touring and selling merchandise, and I honestly believe if you put effort into something and you execute properly, you don’t necessarily have to go through the traditional ways.” That was his account of his own career, not a promise that the same route will work for every musician. Vanity Fair interview

His 2016 album Coloring Book was released without record-company backing, according to The Guardian, while his promotion included a close relationship with Apple. The Recording Academy reports that he won three Grammys in 2017, including Best New Artist. His case shows that being independent of a label does not necessarily mean avoiding corporate partnerships. What these careers show—and what they do not

Across these examples, artists reached audiences through different combinations of self-release, independent labels, free distribution, online platforms, touring, merchandise, and fan relationships. Their arrangements are not interchangeable: owning a label is different from releasing through an independent label, and both differ from returning to independent work after a major deal.

The milestones establish that independent routes can accompany meaningful recognition, including Grammy wins and chart success. They do not show that independence itself caused that success, nor do they provide comparable earnings figures for these musicians. A career path can be independent in one period and involve a major label or other corporate partner in another.
