The original reports described six people as missing, but all seven bodies were recovered by August 23, 2024. Fifteen people survived, including Lynch’s wife, Angela Bacares, and a one-year-old child.
As of August 10, 2026, the basic sequence is clear: the 56-meter yacht heeled approximately 90 degrees to starboard in less than 15 seconds after a sudden wind increase, then flooded and sank in about 50 meters of water. The cause and legal responsibility remain disputed. The UK Marine Accident Investigation Branch has emphasized extreme, highly localized winds and an unrecognized stability vulnerability; Italian prosecutors’ experts have reportedly emphasized crew decisions, preparation and safety-system issues.

What happened to the Bayesian?
The Bayesian was anchored about 0.5 nautical miles southeast of Porticello, near Palermo, when the casualty occurred at approximately 4:06 a.m. local time on August 19, 2024. The yacht capsized violently to starboard, took on water over the starboard rail and through internal stairwells, and disappeared beneath the surface within minutes.
There were 22 people aboard: 12 guests and 10 crew members. Fifteen survived and seven died. A nearby yacht, Sir Robert Baden Powell, helped rescue the survivors.
#1 Best Overall
The vessel had first been anchored near Cefalù. With winds increasing and thunderstorms forecast, the crew decided to motor approximately 25 nautical miles west to Porticello, which offered more shelter and easier disembarkation the following morning. The Bayesian anchored east of Porticello’s main breakwater at approximately 9:24 p.m. on August 18.
The MAIB interim report provides the most detailed publicly available chronology. It distinguishes between the yacht’s almost immediate capsize and the flooding and sinking that followed.
Who died and who survived?
The seven fatalities were:
- Mike Lynch, 59, the British technology entrepreneur and co-founder of Autonomy.
- Hannah Lynch, his 18-year-old daughter.
- Recaldo Thomas, the yacht’s chef.
- Jonathan Bloomer, chairman of Morgan Stanley International.
- Judy Bloomer, Jonathan Bloomer’s wife.
- Chris Morvillo, a Clifford Chance lawyer who represented Lynch in his US fraud trial.
- Neda Morvillo, Chris Morvillo’s wife.
Angela Bacares, Mike Lynch’s wife, survived, as did the other 14 survivors, including a one-year-old child. All crew members survived except chef Recaldo Thomas.

One crew member’s body had been recovered shortly after the sinking, while six others, including Lynch and Hannah, were initially reported missing. The final missing body, Hannah Lynch’s, was recovered on August 23, 2024. Contemporary reports from CBS News and The Washington Post confirmed the completion of the recovery operation.
Accordingly, describing Mike Lynch or Hannah Lynch as “missing” is accurate only when referring to the initial August 19 reporting. It is not the current casualty status.
The final minutes: a minute-by-minute reconstruction
| Approximate time | What investigators reported |
|---|---|
| August 14 | The Bayesian departed Milazzo for a short trip around the Aeolian Islands and northern Sicily. |
| August 18 | The yacht was anchored near Cefalù before the crew decided to move west because of increasing wind and forecast thunderstorms. |
| 9:24 p.m. | The yacht anchored east of Porticello’s main breakwater. Its centreboard was in the raised position. The sea was initially calm and the wind light. |
| About 3:00 a.m. | The watchkeeper observed approaching thunderclouds and lightning. |
| About 3:55 a.m. | A deckhand recorded the approaching storm, closed forward hatches and cockpit windows, and observed wind of about 30 knots. The yacht began listing to starboard and appeared to be dragging its anchor. |
| About 3:57 a.m. | Both the Bayesian and the nearby Sir Robert Baden Powell began dragging anchor. |
| About 4:00 a.m. | The deckhand woke the skipper. The chief engineer began preparing the engines, generators, steering pumps and hydraulic systems for maneuvering. Crew members and guests were awakened by the yacht’s changing motion. |
| About 4:06 a.m. | Wind suddenly increased to more than 70 knots. The flying-bridge awning was ripped away, and the yacht heeled approximately 90 degrees to starboard in less than 15 seconds. |
| Seconds later | The generators shut down, emergency lighting came on, and water entered over the starboard rail and through internal stairwells. |
| About 4:24 a.m. | A forward liferaft was released and inflated. A crew member had also launched an emergency position-indicating radio beacon. |
| About 4:34 and 4:43 a.m. | Flares were fired. The nearby yacht’s tender reached the survivors shortly afterward. |
The important distinction is that the Bayesian did not simply remain upright and gradually fill with water. It first suffered an extremely rapid knockdown or capsize. Once the vessel passed the point at which it could no longer return upright, the sudden heel allowed water to enter the interior and made escape routes difficult or impossible. The hull then flooded and sank.
Why was escape so difficult?
The report describes a vessel that changed from a normal living space into a steep or nearly vertical environment in seconds. Floors and stairways became difficult to use, furniture and loose objects moved across the interior, and water entered through the starboard side and internal stairwells.

Some people escaped through doors and staircases. Others used furniture drawers as an improvised ladder. Some survivors became trapped in air pockets. These details help explain the casualty without relying on unsupported claims that passengers were negligent, failed to wear life jackets or were asleep because of a safety violation. The publicly available evidence does not establish those claims as legal findings.
What kind of yacht was the Bayesian?
The Bayesian, formerly named Salute, was a large sailing yacht built by Perini Navi in Viareggio, Italy, and delivered in 2008. Its principal specifications, from the builder’s brochure and the MAIB report, included:
| Specification | Detail |
|---|---|
| Length overall | Approximately 55.9 to 56 meters, or 183 feet |
| Beam | 11.52 meters |
| Hull and superstructure | Aluminum |
| Gross tonnage | 473 |
| Main mast height | 72.27 meters, or 237 feet, above the design waterline |
| Draft with retractable keel or centreboard raised | 4.05 meters |
| Draft with keel or centreboard lowered | 9.83 meters |
| Flag | United Kingdom |
| Registered owner | Revtom Limited, a company associated with Angela Bacares |
| Manager | Camper & Nicholsons International |
| Classification society | American Bureau of Shipping |
The ownership detail matters when discussing legal and financial responsibility. The registered owner was Revtom Limited, associated with Bacares, rather than Mike Lynch personally as an individual. That fact does not determine liability, but it is a reason not to describe the yacht as legally owned by Lynch without qualification.
Was the storm a tornado, waterspout or ordinary thunderstorm?
Early witness accounts and news reports used terms such as “tornado” and “waterspout.” The MAIB’s meteorological review later described a likely mesocyclonic thunderstorm involving strong downdrafts and possible tornadic waterspout characteristics. It found that near-surface winds could have exceeded 100 mph, with possible extreme hurricane-force gusts.

The safest description is that a severe, highly localized thunderstorm system crossed the anchorage. A waterspout or tornadic feature was considered possible, but the public evidence does not establish that a confirmed tornado directly struck the yacht.
These terms should not be treated as interchangeable:
- A mesocyclonic thunderstorm is a rotating severe storm system.
- A downdraft or downburst is a powerful descending current of air that can produce abrupt, damaging surface winds.
- A waterspout is a rotating column associated with water, but its presence and direct impact on the yacht would need to be established by evidence.
- A hurricane is a named tropical cyclone, which is not what the public evidence establishes here.
Calling the event definitively a tornado, waterspout, microburst, hurricane or ordinary thunderstorm would overstate what has been resolved.
What the UK MAIB interim report found
The UK Marine Accident Investigation Branch is conducting a technical marine-safety investigation. It is not a criminal prosecution, and its report is not a verdict assigning blame to the captain, crew, owner, builder or classification society.

- In the assumed loss condition, the yacht’s angle of vanishing stability was calculated at 70.6 degrees.
- In that condition, wind above 63.4 knots directly on the beam was sufficient in the MAIB model to knock the yacht over.
- The yacht could have been vulnerable at lower wind speeds depending on the exact direction, load condition and other circumstances.
- The 72-meter mast generated roughly half of the total wind-heeling moment when wind came directly from the side.
- The yacht’s vulnerability in its motoring configuration—with sails lowered, centreboard raised and approximately 10% consumables aboard—was not identified in the stability information available aboard.
- That vulnerability was therefore unknown to the owner and crew, according to the report.
- Once the yacht exceeded its angle of vanishing stability, it could not recover to an upright position.
In plain language, the MAIB’s account is that a sudden wind event could have pushed the yacht past a physical tipping point. The report found that the meteorological evidence indicated transient winds well above the 63.4-knot modeled threshold.
There are important limitations. The report was interim, based partly on a desktop reconstruction and assumptions about the vessel’s condition. At the time it was published, Italian authorities controlled key evidence and the wreck had not been examined. The MAIB expressly stated that its findings could change after salvage and forensic inspection. The official announcement and MAIB report page continue to identify the document as an interim report.
Why does the raised keel or centreboard matter?
The yacht had a retractable keel, also described as a centreboard. Raising it reduced the draft from approximately 9.83 meters to 4.05 meters. A lowered keel places more underwater lateral surface and ballast effect below the hull and generally improves resistance to heeling. Raising it changes the yacht’s stability and wind-response characteristics.
That does not mean the raised position alone caused the sinking or necessarily violated a rule. The MAIB evaluated the raised-centreboard condition as an assumed loss condition; it did not by itself declare that the crew had breached operating instructions. Italian prosecutors’ experts reportedly treated the keel position as an important operational issue, but whether it should have been lowered in those exact circumstances depends on the vessel’s manuals, stability information, weather data and intended maneuvering plan.
The evidence supports saying that the keel position was a significant factor examined by investigators—not that “the crew left the keel up, so the yacht sank.”
Why Italian investigators reportedly disagree
Reports in April and May 2026 described a competing preliminary account from experts assisting Italian prosecutors. According to Sky News and other reporting, those experts considered the weather closer to a manageable squall or a sudden increase in wind before thunderstorms, rather than an overwhelming storm that made the casualty unavoidable.

The full Italian technical report was not publicly available in the sources reviewed. The findings described by the media were preliminary or based on reported expert material, not a final court determination. The Geopop comparison explains the conflict between the Italian account and the MAIB’s interim analysis.
The two explanations are not necessarily mutually exclusive. A severe wind event could have been the immediate physical trigger, while preparation, configuration or response could still have affected whether the vessel capsized and how quickly it flooded. The central unresolved question is how much weight each factor should receive in determining cause and legal responsibility.
Were hatches or doors left open?
Investigators have examined whether openings, watertight doors and safety systems contributed to downflooding. But the public evidence does not establish that one specific hatch was left open and caused the sinking.
The MAIB chronology records that a deckhand closed forward hatches and cockpit windows at approximately 3:55 a.m. Water later entered over the starboard rail and through internal stairwells after the vessel heeled sharply. That sequence is consistent with rapid downflooding after a major heel, but it does not answer every question about the yacht’s other openings or safety systems.

Until the complete forensic findings are public, the accurate wording is that investigators examined whether openings or safety systems contributed to water entry—not that an open hatch has been proven to have caused the disaster.
What happened to the wreck?
The Bayesian came to rest at approximately 50 meters, or 165 feet, below the surface. Salvage crews raised the hull in June 2025 and moved it to Termini Imerese for examination. The mast was detached and left for separate recovery because it had to be removed to rotate and raise the hull. Reports from The Associated Press and The Guardian described the operation.
Salvage was important because investigators could then inspect the hull, internal systems, safety equipment, doors, openings and keel mechanism rather than relying only on photographs, witness accounts, weather reconstruction and vessel documents. Recovery did not automatically resolve the dispute; it provided evidence for the continuing Italian and UK investigations.

Italian criminal investigation
Captain James Cutfield, chief engineer Tim Parker Eaton and deckhand Matthew Griffiths have been publicly identified as being under investigation in Italy. The potential offenses reported include negligent shipwreck and multiple counts of negligent homicide.
Being under investigation does not mean that any of the three has been formally charged, convicted or found responsible. The Italian prosecutor’s office is the relevant institutional source for checking official notices: Procura di Termini Imerese.
UK marine-safety investigation
The MAIB investigation has a different purpose. It seeks to establish what happened and identify safety lessons. It is not designed to determine criminal guilt or award damages. Its interim findings about wind and stability should therefore not be described as a criminal finding against the crew, owner, builder or classification society.

Civil litigation
The Italian Sea Group, which owns the Perini Navi brand, reportedly filed a civil claim of approximately €456 million against Revtom and members of the crew. Reporting said the claim alleges crew negligence and reputational or commercial damage to the Perini brand, while the defense has pointed toward possible design or documentation issues.
That claim is an allegation in civil litigation, not an established finding. A civil claim, a criminal investigation and a marine-safety report are separate proceedings with different standards, purposes and outcomes.

Mike Lynch was a British technology entrepreneur and co-founder of Autonomy. He had been acquitted on June 6, 2024, in a US fraud trial connected with Hewlett-Packard’s acquisition of the software company. The voyage was widely reported as a celebration of that acquittal; The Guardian reported on the acquittal at the time.
That background explains why Lynch’s identity received extensive coverage, but it does not establish any connection between the earlier fraud case and the sinking. Online speculation about the timing of the voyage or other deaths is not supported by verified evidence cited in the investigations. The available evidence concerns a maritime casualty involving weather, vessel stability, flooding and crew response.
What remains unresolved?
Open questions as of August 10, 2026
- What was the exact wind speed and direction at the yacht’s position during the decisive seconds?
- Did a waterspout, downdraft or other tornadic feature directly affect the vessel?
- What was the exact keel or centreboard position at each stage of the event?
- Were any hatches, doors or other openings open or improperly activated?
- Where precisely did water enter, and how did the flooding progress?
- Did the stability information adequately describe the motoring configuration with sails lowered and centreboard raised?
- Did vessel design, maintenance, documentation, crew conduct, weather or a combination of those factors carry the decisive legal responsibility?
- Will the Italian investigation result in formal charges or be closed?
The strongest current conclusion is therefore narrower than either side’s most definitive public account. The yacht’s rapid capsize, the seven fatalities, the 15 survivors, the recovery of all bodies and the subsequent salvage are established facts. The precise balance between extreme weather, stability characteristics, crew preparation, safety systems and possible downflooding remains contested.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are Mike Lynch and his daughter still missing?
No. Mike Lynch and Hannah Lynch were among the seven people who died in the Bayesian disaster. All seven bodies were recovered by August 23, 2024; Hannah’s body was the final one recovered.
What caused the Bayesian to sink?
No final, universally accepted cause had been established by August 10, 2026. The MAIB’s interim account emphasizes a severe, localized wind event that exceeded the yacht’s stability threshold. Italian prosecutors’ experts reportedly placed more emphasis on crew preparation, delayed response, the keel position and safety systems. The cause may ultimately involve more than one factor.
Was the Bayesian struck by a confirmed tornado?
A severe mesocyclonic thunderstorm with strong downdrafts and possible tornadic waterspout characteristics was considered possible. The public evidence does not establish that a confirmed tornado directly struck the yacht.
Has the Bayesian captain been convicted?
No. Captain James Cutfield, chief engineer Tim Parker Eaton and deckhand Matthew Griffiths were publicly identified as under investigation. An investigation is not a charge, conviction or final finding of responsibility.
Did an open hatch cause the sinking?
That has not been publicly established. The MAIB report says forward hatches and cockpit windows were closed before the capsize, while water later entered over the starboard rail and through internal stairwells. Italian investigators have examined openings and safety systems, but no single open hatch has been confirmed as the decisive cause.

Bottom line: The original “missing” headline is obsolete. Seven people died and 15 survived after the Bayesian capsized near Porticello on August 19, 2024. The UK’s interim safety investigation says extreme wind could have pushed the yacht beyond its stability limit, while Italian prosecutors’ reported preliminary findings emphasize crew decisions and vessel preparation. Salvage has enabled further examination, but as of August 10, 2026, no final public determination has settled responsibility.
