Re:

Microsoft’s “Major” Xbox Layoff Report Was Real—What Happened After June 2025

Bloomberg’s June 24, 2025 report about major Xbox layoffs was borne out the following week, but the approximately 9,000 job figure covered Microsoft broadly—not Xbox alone.

Yes—but the headline is historical. Bloomberg reported on June 24, 2025, that Microsoft was preparing a major round of layoffs across its Xbox gaming organization for the following week. The cuts began on July 2, 2025, as part of Microsoft’s broader reduction of approximately 9,000 jobs.

Xbox was significantly affected, but Microsoft did not disclose a definitive Xbox-only total in the cited reporting. The 9,000 figure applies to Microsoft as a whole, not solely to Xbox.

What was reported on June 24, 2025?

Bloomberg reported that Microsoft managers were preparing for substantial layoffs across the Xbox organization. The report was based on people familiar with the company’s internal plans, rather than a public Microsoft announcement.

At that point, several details remained uncertain:

  • Microsoft had not confirmed the number of Xbox employees who would be affected.
  • The expected cuts appeared to span the broader Xbox organization rather than one individual studio.
  • Microsoft declined to comment on the report.
  • The layoffs were understood to be connected to a wider company reorganization.

Bloomberg characterized the planned action as the fourth major Xbox-related layoff round in roughly 18 months, following earlier job cuts and studio closures. That description was Bloomberg’s framing, not a formal Microsoft classification.

What did “next week” mean?

The original wording referred to the week beginning approximately June 30, 2025—not a future week in 2026.

Date What happened
June 24, 2025 Bloomberg reported that major Xbox layoffs were expected the following week.
June 30, 2025 Microsoft’s fiscal year ended.
July 2, 2025 Microsoft began a broader round of layoffs affecting approximately 9,000 employees.
July 24, 2025 CEO Satya Nadella publicly addressed the job eliminations while reaffirming Microsoft’s strategic investments.

The timing around Microsoft’s fiscal-year end was significant because large reorganizations and budget decisions are often implemented around the start of a new fiscal year. However, the exact internal schedule was not public.

How many Xbox employees were laid off?

There are three different figures to keep separate:

  1. June 24 report: No Xbox-specific headcount was known.
  2. July 2 company-wide reduction: Approximately 9,000 Microsoft jobs were affected, representing less than 4% of the workforce.
  3. Xbox impact: Bloomberg reported that hundreds of gaming employees were affected, but the cited reporting did not establish one definitive Xbox-wide total.

Microsoft reported approximately 228,000 full-time employees as of June 30, 2025, including about 125,000 in the United States and 103,000 internationally, according to its annual SEC filing. The 9,000 figure therefore describes Microsoft-wide cuts. It would be inaccurate to call them 9,000 Xbox layoffs.

Microsoft’s July 2 announcement also did not provide a single publicly definitive Xbox-only number in the cited coverage. “Xbox” can refer to the wider gaming organization, including console hardware, services, publishing, studios, Bethesda and ZeniMax, Activision Blizzard, King, and corporate support functions.

Which Xbox teams and projects were affected?

The reported impact extended beyond Xbox console operations. Coverage described layoffs across Microsoft Gaming, including game development and publishing, Microsoft-owned studios, Bethesda- and ZeniMax-related teams, King, and connected corporate and support functions.

Bloomberg reported that the restructuring was associated with the cancellation of Perfect Dark, the cancellation of Everwild, and other projects that were not all publicly identified. The Initiative, the studio developing Perfect Dark, was also reported as closed.

Those outcomes should not be interpreted as proof that every project was canceled for one reason. A project may be stopped because of budget reductions, staffing changes, development difficulties, strategic reprioritization, or a combination of factors. Nor did the layoffs mean that every Xbox studio was affected equally.

Why was Microsoft restructuring Xbox?

Microsoft’s explanation for the broader July layoffs emphasized streamlining processes and reducing management layers. Reporting and industry analysis also linked the restructuring to several overlapping pressures:

  • Pressure to control costs and improve profitability.
  • Efforts to simplify the organization and eliminate management layers.
  • Microsoft’s increased spending on artificial-intelligence infrastructure.
  • Margin and integration pressures following the Activision Blizzard acquisition.
  • The cost of maintaining a large first-party studio portfolio with long development schedules.
  • A broader review of Xbox’s future console and ecosystem strategy.

These factors provide context, but they do not establish one cause for every individual layoff or project cancellation. The layoffs were widely linked to cost control and Microsoft’s AI investment, while Microsoft’s public explanation focused on organizational streamlining.

In a July 24, 2025 post, Nadella acknowledged the job eliminations while arguing that Microsoft was continuing to invest in strategic priorities. That message illustrates an important distinction: a company can reduce headcount in a division while continuing to invest in that business.

What did the cuts mean for Xbox’s strategy?

The layoffs occurred as Microsoft was pursuing a broader gaming ecosystem spanning Xbox consoles, Windows PC, cloud gaming, and other devices. That strategy offers Microsoft more potential audiences, but it also creates difficult choices about where to spend development resources and how much differentiation Xbox hardware should retain.

Microsoft was also increasingly releasing games beyond traditional Xbox-console boundaries. That can expand a game’s audience and revenue potential, but it may complicate the traditional console strategy, in which exclusive first-party software is used to sell hardware.

The reported restructuring therefore raised questions about:

  • Whether some release schedules would be delayed or changed.
  • How much Microsoft would continue investing in first-party development.
  • How stable individual studios would be.
  • How Xbox would balance consoles, PC, cloud gaming, and multiplatform publishing.
  • Whether a large portfolio of studios could be maintained at previous staffing levels.

These are strategic implications, not proof that Microsoft was ending console development, abandoning Xbox, or canceling all future games. The layoffs demonstrated a major reorganization, not the shutdown or sale of the Xbox business.

What was confirmed versus what was only reported?

Claim Status
Major Xbox layoffs were expected Reported by Bloomberg on June 24, 2025, based on unnamed sources.
The cuts would happen “next week” Refers to approximately June 30–July 4, 2025.
Microsoft cut about 9,000 jobs Confirmed as a broader Microsoft-wide reduction on July 2.
All 9,000 jobs were in Xbox False. The number covered Microsoft as a whole.
Hundreds of Xbox workers were affected Reported by Bloomberg.
Perfect Dark and Everwild were canceled Reported outcomes of the July restructuring.
The Initiative closed Reported in coverage of the Xbox cuts.
Xbox was abandoning gaming Not established. Microsoft continued to describe gaming as an area of investment.

The bottom line on the original headline

The June 24, 2025 report was accurate in its central direction and timing. Microsoft did begin a major round of layoffs the following week, on July 2. But the confirmed event was part of a company-wide reduction of approximately 9,000 jobs, not a publicly confirmed 9,000-person Xbox layoff.

Xbox suffered widespread cuts, with hundreds of gaming employees reportedly affected and projects including Perfect Dark and Everwild canceled. The precise Xbox-only headcount was not publicly established in the cited reporting, so any article presenting the entire 9,000 figure as an Xbox total is misleading.
