That 28-day interval was the time between notification and remediation—not a confirmed measure of how long the files had been exposed. The reporting does not establish whether anyone beyond the researchers accessed the material or whether customers were affected.
What was exposed, and when?
SOCRadar researchers found the server on February 6, 2024, and notified Microsoft that day. Microsoft secured the files on March 5, according to ITPro’s April 11, 2024 account. The 28 days between those dates describe Microsoft’s response interval after notification; the sources do not say when the exposure began.
The Azure storage server was reachable from the public internet without a password. It held internal material related to Bing, including code, scripts, and configuration files containing passwords, keys, and other credentials employees used to access internal databases and systems. Public accessibility means someone could potentially reach the server if they knew where to look; it does not establish that anyone actually did so.
What did Microsoft say about the credentials?
Microsoft spokesperson Jeff Jones told TechCrunch that the credentials “were temporary, accessible only from internal networks, and disabled after testing.” He also said the credentials should not have been exposed and thanked the researchers for responsible disclosure. That characterization concerns the credentials’ access context; it does not change the fact that the files were reportedly reachable from the public internet. TechCrunch’s April 9, 2024 report says Jones did not specify how long the server had been exposed or whether anyone besides SOCRadar discovered the data.

Is there evidence that hackers accessed the files or customers were affected?
The cited reporting does not establish access by anyone other than the researchers, use of the credentials by an attacker, or customer impact. It also does not give the total duration of the server’s exposure before discovery. Those unknowns should not be mistaken for proof that no unauthorized access occurred, just as the public exposure alone is not proof that an attacker obtained the files.
Why can exposed internal credentials matter?
SOCRadar researcher Can Yoleri told TechCrunch that the material could help malicious actors identify other locations where Microsoft stored internal files, potentially leading to further leaks or service compromise. This was an assessment of possible risk, not evidence that such activity took place in this incident.

GitGuardian developer advocate McKenzie Jackson told ITPro that secrets exposed in plain text can help an intruder move between systems, and recommended storing them in dedicated secret-management systems with tight access controls. That addresses credential sprawl and access governance; it is not a claim that a particular product would have prevented this server from being publicly reachable.
How this incident differs from Microsoft’s 2023 SAS-token exposure
Microsoft disclosed a separate incident in September 2023 involving a Shared Access Signature (SAS) token in a public GitHub repository. An employee had included a URL with an overly permissive token while contributing to open-source AI learning models. Wiz researchers used it to access backups of two former employees’ workstation profiles and internal Teams messages. Microsoft said no customer data was exposed, revoked the token, and blocked external access on June 24, two days after Wiz reported the issue. That case involved a token shared in a repository and different data; it is not the February–March 2024 public Azure server incident. Microsoft’s Security Response Center disclosure explains the 2023 case and related SAS-token practices.

- Passwordless World - A revolutionary new way to protect your account info. By being FIDO2 certified by the world’s largest ecosystem for standard-based, interoperable authentication, FIDO2 makes everyday log-in experience effortless and passwordless yet more secure than generic password style security. **Note: FIDO2 does NOT support Mac log-in.
- Online Account Protection - FIDO2 key is backward compatible with U2F protocol and works with the newest Chrome browser with operating systems such as: Windows, macOS, or Linux. U2F can be supported and protected on all websites that follow U2F protocols.
- Multi-factored Authentication - Built-in, advanced HOTP (One Time Password) technology that completes the unique multi-factored authentication process. Eliminate worry and help prevent losing your account info to theft, phishing, hacking, or other online scams. Note: Only Enterprise Users using Azure Active Directory can access Windows Hello log-in via Thetis FIDO2 Security Key.
- Compact And Durable - 360° design with rotating aluminum alloy cover that shields the USB connector when not in use. Tough and durable alloy protects FIDO2 key from daily wear-and-tear, accidental drops, and scratches.
- Portable Design - ultra-portable design allows you to take your FIDO key anywhere you need it.
Practical security lessons—and their limits
- Restrict file access at the storage layer. Permissions and network-exposure controls help prevent storage locations from being publicly reachable.
- Keep secrets out of broadly shared files. Secret-management controls can limit credential sprawl and govern who can access credentials and how they are rotated or revoked.
- Make credentials revocable and monitor access. Microsoft’s SAS-token guidance recommends limiting a token to the necessary resource and permissions, setting a near-term expiry, treating the URL as a secret, preparing for revocation, and monitoring storage access. Its recommendation for SAS URL expiry of one hour or less applies to SAS tokens; it is not a disclosed fix for the 2024 incident.
- Use controls for the risks they address. Phishing-resistant authentication can reduce some account-compromise risks, but it does not by itself prevent public access to a storage container or remove exposed secrets.
Microsoft’s September 2024 Secure Future Initiative progress report said phishing-resistant credentials were enforced in production and broadly adopted in the productivity environment. It also reported video-based identity verification for 95% of users in Microsoft’s internal productivity environment and that more than 73% of tokens issued for Microsoft apps were validated using one standardized implementation. These are company-reported progress figures, not independent measures of security effectiveness or statistics about the 2024 exposure. Microsoft’s September 2024 progress report provides the context.
