Microsoft announced AI-assisted shopping features for Bing and Edge on June 29, 2023. They were designed to help shoppers find products, compare specifications and prices, summarize reviews, and track purchases. The announcement describes a collection of features, not a standalone shopping app; in Edge, Microsoft is now moving shopping assistance into Copilot, with availability varying by region, account, product, and retailer.
What Microsoft announced
Microsoft’s June 2023 announcement brought shopping assistance into Bing search and chat, the Edge sidebar, and existing Edge shopping features. The tools aimed to make product research and purchase management easier without requiring a separate shopping application. The main functions fell into three stages: discovering products, evaluating options, and checking prices or managing purchases.

What the shopping features did
Buying Guides
A broad Bing query, such as a product category or a list of items someone needs, could produce an AI-generated guide with categories to consider, buying advice, suggested products, specifications, and a comparison table. The goal was to turn an open-ended search into a shortlist and help shoppers identify relevant selection criteria.

A guide is a starting point, not an authoritative review. Before relying on a recommendation, check the exact model number and variant, compatibility, seller, warranty, return terms, current stock, delivery estimate, and checkout price. Product details can differ between manufacturer specifications and retailer listings.
Review Summaries
Review Summaries were intended to condense online opinions about a product and surface recurring positive or negative themes. For example, Microsoft described using Bing or Bing Chat in Edge to summarize what people were saying about headphones.
A summary can help identify questions to investigate, but it may flatten differences among sources, omit context, reflect outdated reviews, or misread sarcasm and ambiguous wording. It does not establish that a product passed independent testing. For expensive, technical, or safety-sensitive purchases, inspect the original reviews and independent test results rather than treating an AI-generated consensus as proof.

Product and price comparison
Comparison features could show similar products and their specifications, while price tools could surface other retailer offers, historical price information, and price tracking. These functions can save time when researching alternatives, but a displayed match may be a different generation, size, color, storage capacity, bundle, or regional model. A visible offer may also come from a marketplace seller rather than the retailer shoppers expect.

In the 2023 launch announcement, Microsoft said Price Match was coming soon in the United States; Price History, Price Comparison, Coupons, Cashback, and Package Tracking were described as available in selected markets. Those launch statements should not be read as a guarantee that every feature is available to every shopper today.
How to try shopping assistance now
Microsoft’s interface and rollout can differ, so these are practical starting points rather than guaranteed button-by-button directions.

In Bing
- Open Bing Shopping or enter a product category or shopping query in Bing.
- Look for shopping results, product cards, Buying Guide content, or Copilot shopping assistance if offered.
- Ask for a shortlist within a budget, a comparison of specific models, key buying criteria, review themes, price history, or alternative retailer options.
- Open the manufacturer and retailer listings to verify the product identity, seller, shipping, return policy, warranty, and final price.
The original announcement also pointed users to Bing Shopping on desktop and mobile, Bing Chat, the Bing mobile app, and the Edge sidebar. Which surface displays a feature can change with product updates and rollout.
In Microsoft Edge
- Open a product page in Edge and open the Copilot sidebar.
- Ask Copilot for product insights, review themes, price history, or buying options from other retailers.
- If the relevant controls appear, review price history or enable price tracking; check whether comparison, coupons, or cashback are offered for that product and market.
- Before paying, confirm the offer and terms on the retailer’s site. Do not assume the assistant completes checkout for every retailer.

What changed in Edge
At launch, Edge shopping could appear through a blue shopping-tag icon in the address bar or shopping flyouts during checkout. Microsoft’s current support documentation says standalone shopping tools are being retired and consolidated into Copilot in Edge. The Copilot sidebar is becoming the main entry point, and may provide price history, tracking, reviews, product insights, and offers from other retailers, including cashback where supported.

The transition is gradual. If the old icon or a particular shopping panel is missing, that does not necessarily mean shopping assistance is unavailable: look in Copilot in Edge. Conversely, seeing Copilot does not mean every listed feature is enabled for your account, region, or product page.

Microsoft’s launch was staged rather than universal. At launch, Buying Guides were available in Bing in the United States, with broader availability planned; Buying Guides in Edge were beginning a worldwide rollout. Review Summaries were beginning a worldwide rollout in June 2023. Other shopping features were described as available in selected markets. These are historical rollout statements, not current guarantees.
Microsoft’s present support information continues to qualify availability by region, rollout, account settings, product information, and retailer support. Shopping results also depend on product matching and the retailers represented; a comparison may omit a relevant seller or local option. The cited Microsoft materials do not identify a separate charge for the Bing and Edge shopping features described in the 2023 announcement. That does not establish that every Copilot-related service or other Microsoft product is free or included in every plan.

Check the real cost before buying
A comparison card is not necessarily the final amount a shopper will pay. Microsoft warns that Copilot price and availability information may contain discrepancies or change. The displayed figure may not include shipping, tax, membership requirements, or conditions attached to an offer. Confirm the total at checkout and compare equivalent products and sellers.
Before acting on a price or product summary, check:
- Identity: Exact model, generation, variant, included accessories, and condition.
- Seller: Whether the offer is sold by the retailer or a third-party marketplace seller.
- Total price: Shipping, tax, required memberships, coupon conditions, and any cashback terms.
- Purchase protections: Warranty, returns, delivery timing, and authenticity or installation requirements.
- Price-match rules: Whether the retailer accepts the competing seller and offer type; policies can exclude marketplace listings, limited-time deals, membership prices, or shipping differences.
- Review evidence: Whether complaints or praise refer to the same product version and whether independent testing supports important claims.
AI can reduce the number of pages needed for an initial search, but it can also infer unsupported details, mix up variants, or overlook source quality. Be especially cautious with medical or safety products, children’s products, costly electronics, refurbished items, and purchases with complicated compatibility or warranty requirements.
Shopping queries may also disclose preferences or purchase interests to an AI service. Consider what information you are comfortable sharing, and consult Microsoft’s current privacy information for details about data handling; the shopping feature descriptions alone do not establish retention or personalization practices.

Who should use the tools?
Bing and Edge shopping assistance is most useful as a first-pass research aid: building a shortlist, comparing routine specifications, finding questions to ask, and monitoring a price when tracking is available. It is less suitable as the sole authority for a high-stakes purchase or as proof that a displayed deal is the lowest legitimate delivered price. Use the AI output to direct verification, then make the decision from current retailer terms, manufacturer information, original reviews, and independent testing where appropriate.
