Microsoft reported $90.0 billion in revenue for the quarter ended June 30, 2026, while Azure and other cloud services grew 43% year over year. The results helped spark a sharp share-price rally: Axios reported that Microsoft stock rose 16% on July 30 and the company’s market value increased by about $450 billion that day. That was a market reaction to fresh results—not proof that Microsoft’s AI spending will produce a particular return or that the AI trade cannot reverse.
What Microsoft reported in its latest quarter
Microsoft’s fiscal fourth quarter ended June 30, 2026. Revenue was $90.0 billion, up 18% year over year; revenue for the full fiscal year was $331.8 billion, also up 18%. Microsoft Cloud revenue reached $59.3 billion, a 27% increase, while Azure and other cloud services revenue grew 43%. (Microsoft, July 29, 2026.)
The company also reported two measures of earnings per diluted share: GAAP EPS of $4.81, up 32%, and non-GAAP EPS of $4.74, up 23%. Microsoft’s non-GAAP measure excludes the impact from its investments in OpenAI. Microsoft provides both measures because specific items can affect reported results; the adjusted measure is an additional view, not a replacement for the GAAP result.
Several discrete items contributed a $0.27 benefit to diluted EPS compared with Microsoft’s prior guidance. These included a $3.2 billion gain from its Anthropic investment and lower-than-expected voluntary retirement expenses, partly offset by severance and Xbox impairment charges. Those items help explain the difference between the quarter’s reported performance and the company’s earlier expectations.

What the figures say about AI demand—and what they do not
Azure growth and capacity
Microsoft said Azure demand continued to exceed available capacity, and that capacity brought online during the quarter was quickly monetized. It reported adding a gigawatt of capacity in Q4 and said it remained on track to roughly double total capacity in two years. Management also described efforts to bring GPUs online faster and improve efficiency across silicon, systems and software. These are company statements about demand and execution; they do not independently establish utilization rates or investment returns.
Azure’s annual revenue surpassed $100 billion for the first time in FY2026. That is a meaningful scale milestone, but it is not the same as an AI-only revenue figure: Azure includes broader cloud services. Microsoft’s Q3 release said its AI business had exceeded a $37 billion annual revenue run rate, up 123% year over year. An annualized run rate is an extrapolation, not recognized revenue for a quarter. (Microsoft, April 29, 2026.)

Copilot adoption
Microsoft said Microsoft 365 Copilot had more than 30 million paid seats. That indicates a substantial paid deployment, but the seat count alone does not disclose revenue per seat, usage, customer retention, or profitability. CEO Satya Nadella said the milestones reflected customer confidence in Microsoft’s AI services; that is the company’s interpretation, rather than an independent measure of customer outcomes.
Backlog is not booked profit
Commercial remaining performance obligation (RPO)—contracted revenue Microsoft expects to recognize over time—increased 84% to $678 billion. Management said roughly 30% was expected to be recognized in the next 12 months, with a weighted average duration of 2.3 years. RPO is neither revenue already earned nor cash already collected, and it does not guarantee profit. Microsoft also said RPO excluding OpenAI grew 25%; nearly 90% of full-year cloud revenue came from customers outside frontier-model companies. That offers context on the breadth of cloud demand and customer concentration, but it does not eliminate execution or return risks. (Microsoft, July 29, 2026.)

Why spending can stay high while sales and earnings grow
AI cloud services require data centers, servers, networking and accelerators before the resulting capacity can generate revenue. Microsoft reported quarterly capital expenditures of $41 billion, according to the Associated Press. Strong revenue growth and substantial infrastructure investment can therefore occur at the same time: new capacity is costly to build, and customer demand may arrive faster than supply.
Microsoft said its calendar-year 2026 investment expectations were unchanged. Management discussed an approximately $175 billion figure in connection with an accounting presentation change: more future data-center leases were expected to shift from finance leases to operating leases. Operating leases are not included in capex in the same way. The figure should not be read as a newly announced increase in spending. Separately, management expected FY2027 capex to grow year over year. These are outlook statements, not completed spending results.

Margins show the cost of expansion
Microsoft Cloud gross margin was 65%, down year over year. Management attributed the decline to sales mix shifting toward Azure, continued AI infrastructure investment and increased usage, partly offset by efficiency gains. The company expected FY2027 operating margins to decline by less than one percentage point and said it expected to remain free-cash-flow positive. Those are forward-looking expectations, not realized FY2027 results.
How the quarter compares with Q3
Microsoft’s Q3 results provide context for the acceleration in Azure growth, but the metrics cover different parts of the business and should not be treated as a direct measure of AI profitability.

Axios reported that Microsoft shares gained 16% on July 30, 2026, after the earnings report, adding approximately $450 billion to the company’s market capitalization that day. Axios attributed investor enthusiasm to the results and Azure growth. The move suggests investors responded positively to evidence of cloud growth and demand despite concerns about high AI spending. It does not show what the company’s long-term return on that spending will be, predict future stock performance, or establish that the broader AI trade will continue. (Axios, July 31, 2026.)
The investor question highlighted by the Associated Press was whether Azure and Copilot can eventually generate returns sufficient to justify substantial investment. The Q4 results provide evidence that AI demand is affecting a large operating business: Azure grew quickly, paid Copilot seats exceeded 30 million, and management said demand outstripped capacity. But the quarter does not resolve how much profit the investments will ultimately produce.
What to watch in future results
For a personal-finance reader assessing the company rather than reacting to a single-day move, the useful question is whether growth converts into durable, profitable cash generation. Track these measures together rather than relying on an AI headline or one growth rate:

- AI-specific monetization: distinguish AI revenue or run-rate disclosures from broader Azure revenue and paid-seat counts.
- Investment and lease treatment: read capex figures with the company’s accounting explanation, including data-center leases.
- Backlog quality: consider RPO composition, recognition timing and duration; contracted future revenue is not current profit.
- Capacity and customer concentration: compare management’s supply and demand comments with the share of business tied to large customers or frontier-model companies.
- Margins and cash generation: test whether efficiency and revenue growth offset infrastructure costs over time.
These measures can clarify whether the operating evidence is strengthening; none alone establishes a future stock return.
