During the first two weeks of the rollout, INRIX reported slower speeds on SR 520 and I-405—but its early analysis does not establish that the policy alone caused the declines.
Who had to return to the office, and when?
Microsoft announced the policy on September 9, 2025. Employees in the Puget Sound region who lived within 50 miles of a Microsoft office were expected to work onsite three days a week by the end of February 2026. GeekWire reported that the start date was February 23.
The rollout was phased: Puget Sound first, followed by other U.S. locations and then locations outside the United States. Microsoft said employees outside Puget Sound did not need to act until their executive vice president communicated otherwise. The announcement did not set the same weekdays for everyone; GeekWire reported that teams and managers determined schedules, some groups could require more than three days, and some customer-facing roles, including field sales and consultants, were exempt. Microsoft’s announcement and GeekWire’s February 20, 2026 report describe those details.
What current applicants should check
The initial Puget Sound policy is not a universal schedule for every Microsoft employee or job. Microsoft Careers says each posting has a worksite field specifying required onsite days, ranging from remote to fully onsite. Expectations depend on the role, primary residence, and organization-specific guidelines. Check the worksite field on the particular listing rather than assuming a three-day schedule. What did INRIX report about SR 520 and I-405?
INRIX published its analysis on March 9, 2026. It examined eastbound and westbound SR 520 and northbound and southbound I-405 during the weeks of February 23 and March 2. Its findings are reported speed changes for particular directions and commute periods, not regionwide averages or direct measurements of how much longer every trip took.
| Road and direction | Period or corridor | INRIX’s reported change |
|---|---|---|
| SR 520, eastbound | PM commute across the analyzed week | Speeds fell between 5% and 20%; the largest drops were Monday and Wednesday. |
| SR 520, westbound | Tuesday | Speeds fell 16% to 47 mph. |
| SR 520, westbound | Wednesday and Thursday | Speeds fell 11% Wednesday and 12% Thursday. |
| I-405, both directions as applicable | Morning, Tukwila–Bellevue | Speeds fell by as much as 35%. |
| I-405, both directions as applicable | Morning, Lynnwood–Bellevue | Speeds fell by as much as 25%. |
| I-405, southbound | Evening, Bellevue–Tukwila, Friday | Speeds fell by as much as 27%. |
| I-405, northbound | Evening, Bellevue–Lynnwood | Speeds fell 21%. |
INRIX said Thursday was the most impacted day on I-405 during the 7–9 a.m. commute period. The reported changes differ by corridor, direction, day, and time; an “as much as” figure is a maximum reported change, not a typical result for every driver. Does the analysis prove Microsoft’s policy caused slower traffic?
No. The reported declines occurred during the policy rollout, and INRIX associated them with the return-to-office change, but the analysis was an early before-and-after-style account rather than a controlled causal study. INRIX said it was still early to assess the policy’s impact. The region also had two northbound I-5 lanes closed during the period, another traffic condition the analysis could not separate from the policy’s effects. INRIX’s report includes that qualification.
The figures are speed changes, not equivalent percentage increases in trip duration. The available reporting does not establish how many affected employees drove, what travel modes they used, or how the same corridors would have moved without the policy. Nor does the short initial window show whether the changes continued in later weeks.

What the commute findings mean for workers’ time and budgets
For people traveling on these corridors, slower traffic can mean a less predictable trip and more time spent commuting. But INRIX’s speed percentages alone cannot calculate an individual’s added travel time or costs: that depends on the route, actual trip length, time of departure, and travel mode.
Microsoft’s 2022 New Future of Work report discussed agreeing on shared in-office hours, such as 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., rather than fixed days as a way teams might reduce traffic exposure and commuting time. That was a research-report recommendation, not a description of the 2026 policy or evidence that Microsoft teams adopted those hours. Microsoft New Future of Work Report 2022.
