Microsoft’s May 2025 workforce reduction included 1,985 planned job cuts in Washington state, according to a Washington WARN filing. The reductions were scheduled to begin July 12, 2025, and formed part of the company’s broader plan to reduce its global workforce by approximately 6,000 employees.
The short answer
The Washington filing covered 1,510 employees working from Microsoft offices and 475 remote workers. It was not an additional 1,985 jobs on top of the global total: the Washington positions were part of Microsoft’s approximately 6,000-job worldwide reduction.

The event was reported on May 13, 2025. Because the scheduled effective date was July 12, 2025, it should be understood as a 2025 restructuring rather than a current layoff announcement.

What the Washington WARN filing showed
| Detail | Reported figure |
|---|---|
| Washington jobs covered | 1,985 |
| Office-based employees | 1,510 |
| Remote employees | 475 |
| Scheduled start date | July 12, 2025 |
| Broader global reduction | Approximately 6,000 employees |
The filing applied to Microsoft workers across Washington state. Available reporting does not provide a complete city-by-city or office-by-office breakdown, so it would be inaccurate to describe all 1,985 positions as Redmond-only jobs.
Microsoft’s home state includes its headquarters and substantial operations in the Seattle region. GeekWire reported that Microsoft employed approximately 54,000 people in that region shortly before the cuts, but that figure is a regional estimate and is not the same as a statewide headcount.
What a WARN filing does—and does not—prove
A WARN filing is advance notice of a qualifying mass layoff or business closure. Washington’s Employment Security Department says WARN information generally identifies the employer, location, anticipated layoff start date, whether a closure is involved, and whether the action is temporary or permanent. Employers are not required to include the specific business reason in the notice. See the Washington ESD explanation of WARN information.

That means the 1,985 figure describes planned job reductions covered by the notice. It should not automatically be treated as a final employment ledger showing that every person left Microsoft on the same date.
Why Microsoft said it was restructuring
Microsoft characterized the changes as organizational adjustments intended to position the company for success in a “dynamic marketplace.” In an April 30, 2025 earnings call, CFO Amy Hood discussed operational efficiency and reducing layers of management. The companywide reductions affected different geographies and employee levels, including operations at LinkedIn.
Those statements establish Microsoft’s stated rationale, but they do not prove that the cuts were caused by poor financial performance or that every affected role was eliminated for the same reason. A profitable company can still restructure to change its organization, reduce management layers, redirect investment, or alter the mix of skills it needs.

Microsoft had also announced roughly 10,000 job cuts in 2023. The May 2025 reduction was described as one of the company’s largest layoffs since that earlier restructuring.

Not according to any explicit statement in the available reporting. Microsoft was investing heavily in cloud computing and artificial intelligence, making AI an important part of the company’s broader business context. But Microsoft did not say that AI directly replaced the 1,985 Washington workers.
The most accurate distinction is:
- Confirmed: Microsoft was pursuing efficiency and organizational changes while continuing major AI and cloud investments.
- Not confirmed: That AI directly caused the Washington reductions or replaced particular employees.
- Unsupported: Claims that the cuts primarily targeted software engineers, Xbox workers, sales staff, or one specific product group.
AI may be part of management’s long-term decisions about investments and staffing, but the available evidence does not establish a direct cause for each position in the filing.

How large was the broader restructuring?
Microsoft said the global reduction affected approximately 6,000 employees, or less than 3% of its workforce at the time. Its 2025 annual report later reported approximately 228,000 full-time employees as of June 30, 2025, including 125,000 in the United States and 103,000 internationally.
That headcount provides useful scale, but it should not be used to calculate an exact Washington percentage. The annual-report figure is a companywide headcount measured at a particular date, while the WARN filing concerns a specific state and planned reductions beginning later. The global percentage also should not be applied directly to Washington without a comparable Washington workforce denominator.
What happened afterward in Washington?
Washington’s Employment Security Department later reported that Microsoft submitted five layoff notices in 2025 potentially affecting 3,202 workers. That is a broader annual total, not a replacement for or correction to the 1,985 jobs in the May filing.
Best Value
The two figures answer different questions:
- 1,985: The specific Washington WARN filing associated with the May 2025 global restructuring.
- 3,202: The potential total across five Microsoft Washington notices during all of 2025.
The figures should not be added together or treated as duplicate counts without knowing how the individual notices relate to one another. The ESD’s 2025 annual economic report provides the later statewide context.
What remains unknown
The available sources do not establish:
- Which teams, job categories, or products were most affected.
- How the 1,985 positions were distributed among Washington cities or offices.
- Whether internal transfers were offered.
- Individual severance, benefits, or notice terms.
- The exact number of contractors versus direct employees.
- Whether every planned reduction resulted in a completed termination.
- The demographic composition of the affected workforce.
- Whether AI played a direct role in any individual employment decision.
Those gaps matter because a WARN notice supplies advance layoff information, not a complete explanation of the company’s staffing decisions or the final outcome for every worker.
Bottom line
Microsoft’s 2025 restructuring covered 1,985 planned job reductions in Washington state, including 475 remote workers, beginning July 12, 2025. The cuts were part of an approximately 6,000-job global reduction. Microsoft cited organizational change, efficiency, and fewer management layers—not AI as a direct explanation for every affected job. Later Washington data showed a larger annual total across five notices, but that figure should remain separate from the specific May filing.
