The company called it a “major announcement,” but did not identify the product or provide specifications.
At the time, the leading expectation was that Microsoft would introduce Intel-powered business versions of the Surface Laptop 7 and Surface Pro 11, potentially with Intel Lunar Lake processors. Those hardware details were reported expectations—not specifications confirmed by Microsoft. As of August 18, 2026, the announcement is historical, and Microsoft’s business catalog includes newer Surface Pro and Surface Laptop generations.

What Microsoft actually confirmed
Microsoft’s Surface account teased a “major announcement” for Surface for Business at the Microsoft AI Tour event in New York on January 30, 2025. The announcement was reported on January 8, 2025, by Windows Central.
The official teaser established four points:
- The announcement concerned Microsoft’s commercial Surface portfolio.
- It was scheduled for January 30, 2025.
- The event was in New York City and formed part of Microsoft AI Tour.
- Microsoft did not publicly disclose the product, price, shipping date, or specifications.
“Major news” could have referred to new hardware, refreshed configurations, accessories, software, or commercial-management features. The wording alone did not prove that Microsoft was launching a particular Surface device.

Why the business event mattered
Microsoft AI Tour was aimed at business and enterprise audiences. That made a commercial device announcement more plausible than a conventional consumer launch, but it did not mean the event was exclusively a hardware keynote.
Surface for Business products can differ from consumer models in Windows edition, support, warranty, purchasing channels, connectivity options, and available configurations. Businesses may buy through Microsoft’s commercial store, enterprise resellers, or volume-procurement arrangements rather than the standard retail channel.
The hardware that was expected
The strongest expectation at the time was that Microsoft would add Intel versions of the Surface Laptop 7 and Surface Pro 11 for commercial customers. Reporting also pointed to possible Intel Lunar Lake processors and a potential 5G Surface Laptop configuration, although 5G availability might have arrived later.
Those details should be treated as reporting and informed expectation, not as facts contained in Microsoft’s teaser. Microsoft had not confirmed:
- the exact product names;
- the processor family;
- 5G availability;
- pricing or configurations;
- the shipping date; or
- consumer-retail availability.
A business Surface may be available to an individual buyer, but a commercial launch does not guarantee that the same model will be stocked, marketed, or supported identically for consumers.

Why Intel versions could matter to businesses
Many organizations prefer x86 Windows hardware because their software and infrastructure were built around it. Intel can reduce transition risk for fleets that depend on legacy applications, specialized drivers, VPN clients, device-management agents, security tools, or unusual peripherals.
That does not make Intel automatically better. Windows on Arm compatibility has improved, and Snapdragon systems can be attractive for efficiency and battery life. The relevant question is whether a company’s own applications, accessories, security stack, and deployment tools work reliably on the selected architecture.

Compatibility and deployment
Before standardizing on either platform, IT teams should test:
- line-of-business and older x86 applications;
- printing, scanners, docks, smart-card readers, and other peripherals;
- VPN, endpoint-security, identity, and device-management software;
- Windows deployment images and Intune policies; and
- BIOS, firmware, and recovery procedures.
Microsoft’s current Surface device-management information emphasizes commercial deployment, Windows security, on-device AI, NPUs, and optional 5G. Businesses should still validate those capabilities against their own management and compliance requirements.
Windows edition and lifecycle
Business buyers should verify that a specific configuration includes Windows 11 Pro. Surface models do not necessarily share the same edition or commercial options.

- A PREMIUM PERFORMANCE LAPTOP — Ready for work, school, and creativity. Built for busy days, big projects, and nonstop multitasking. Run video calls, school and work apps, 20+ browser tabs, and AI tools at the same time without slowing down.
- WITH AI BUILT IN — With a dedicated AI chip (Qualcomm Snapdragon X2 Elite), this Copilot+ PC[5] on Windows 11 helps you work smarter and faster. Prompt, create, and automate with ease - ready for even your most demanding tasks.
- A 13.8" TOUCHSCREEN YOU'LL ACTUALLY USE — Sharp colors, real detail, smooth 120Hz scrolling on the PixelSense touchscreen[1] with LCD display[2]. Tap, scroll, or pinch to zoom - whichever feels right for streaming, editing photos, or daily work.
- 20 HOURS OF BATTERY (LEAVE THE CHARGER) — Up to 20 hours of video playback[3] on a single charge. Work from a coffee shop, take it to class/work, or binge an entire season on a long flight — it'll keep up.
- THE PORTS YOU NEED — Two USB-C / USB4[4] ports for fast charging, big file transfers, or hooking up to three 4K monitors when you want a full desktop. Wi-Fi 7 keeps you online and fast wherever you are.
Lifecycle planning also matters. Check warranty terms, service arrangements, spare-part availability, SSD replacement, accidental-damage coverage, and the organization’s replacement cycle. A thin premium device may be excellent for executives and mobile professionals but less suitable for a field fleet that needs ruggedness, inexpensive repairs, or extensive ports.
Connectivity and displays
Choose 5G only when mobile connectivity justifies its additional cost and administrative complexity. Confirm regional availability and carrier-band compatibility before placing a fleet order.
OLED can provide stronger contrast and image quality, but it may increase the purchase price and complicate fleet standardization. LCD may be the more practical choice for cost-sensitive or mostly office-based deployments.
Consumer and commercial Surface models are not interchangeable
“Surface for Business” describes a sales and support portfolio, not necessarily a completely different exterior design. A commercial version may resemble a consumer Surface while offering different processor, Windows, warranty, connectivity, or purchasing options.
Buyers should compare the exact configuration rather than relying on a model name. Prices can vary with RAM, storage, display, 5G, keyboard bundles, business discounts, promotions, and sales channel.

For the Surface Pro in particular, the device price may not represent the complete cost. A keyboard, pen, dock, protection plan, and warranty can materially increase the cost of a deployment.
What is current as of August 18, 2026?
The January 2025 teaser should no longer be treated as a live buying alert. Microsoft’s current Surface for Business store and commercial Surface site now list later-generation Surface Pro and Surface Laptop products, including Intel and Snapdragon configurations.
Microsoft’s current Surface Pro for Business comparison page lists an Intel Core Ultra configuration, optional 5G, a 13-inch PixelSense Flow touchscreen, optional OLED, and removable SSD options. Current listings also include Windows 11 Pro configurations and business purchasing options.
Do not blend those later-generation products into the 2025 story. The original report concerned what Microsoft was expected to announce in January 2025; current catalog pages describe products available after that event and may use different generation names.

Pricing and total-cost considerations
Microsoft’s U.S. commercial catalog has shown starting prices around $1,499.99 to $1,949.99 for various current and newer-generation Surface Laptop and Surface Pro for Business configurations, with older Surface Pro 10 for Business configurations listed from around $1,699.99 at the time of research. Business keyboards have been listed around $149.99, while a Surface Pro Flex Keyboard with Slim Pen for Business has been listed around $499.99.
These are observed U.S. Microsoft Store signals, not permanent prices. Stock, promotions, configuration names, business discounts, and regional pricing can change. For budgeting, include accessories, protection, support, docks, cellular service, deployment labor, and likely replacement costs.
Should buyers have waited?
In January 2025, buyers with no immediate need for new hardware could reasonably have waited for the January 30 announcement, particularly if they required Intel compatibility or wanted to compare commercial configurations.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Buyers with an urgent deployment should not have delayed solely because Microsoft used the phrase “major.” The teaser did not establish the product, price, availability, or shipping schedule. The safer approach was to compare the available Surface business configuration with alternatives and confirm whether the organization’s software required Intel.
In 2026, the decision should be based on the current Microsoft catalog and the buyer’s deployment requirements—not on the old teaser. Buyers considering refurbished hardware can review Microsoft’s certified-refurbished Surface for Business catalog, while recognizing that older devices may offer a shorter support runway or lack newer AI capabilities.
Bottom line
The confirmed news was that Microsoft planned a major Surface for Business announcement for January 30, 2025, in New York. The expected Intel Surface Laptop and Surface Pro models, Lunar Lake processors, and possible 5G configuration were reported possibilities, not details Microsoft confirmed in the teaser.
For business buyers, the important issue was compatibility and total ownership cost: test the software and peripherals, verify Windows 11 Pro and management support, price the required accessories, and distinguish historical 2025 expectations from the later-generation products Microsoft lists today.
