The figure marked a major adoption milestone, but it was a company-reported usage count—not 300 million paid subscriptions, businesses, or daily users. Microsoft later reported more than 320 million monthly active users in December 2023 and March 2024.
When did Microsoft Teams cross 300 million users?
Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said on the company’s April 25, 2023, earnings call that Teams had “surpassed 300 million monthly active users this quarter.” The period was Microsoft’s fiscal Q3 2023, ending March 31, 2023. The milestone is therefore best dated to that quarter, rather than treated as a precise count on the day of the announcement. Microsoft’s earnings-call transcript is the primary source for the statement.

| October 11, 2022 | 270 million monthly active users, according to Microsoft. |
| Fiscal Q3 2023, ended March 31, 2023 | More than 300 million monthly active users, announced April 25, 2023, on the earnings call. |
| December 20, 2023 | More than 320 million monthly active users, reported in Microsoft’s year-in-review post. |
| March 26, 2024 | More than 320 million monthly active users across 181 markets and 44 languages, according to a Microsoft Teams update. |
Comparing the reported milestones, Teams added at least 30 million MAUs from 270 million to the 300 million threshold, and at least 50 million from 270 million to more than 320 million. The latter represents approximately 18.5% growth using the stated figures. These are comparisons between rounded milestone disclosures, not a precise quarterly growth series; the “more than” totals also mean the underlying counts are not exact.

What does “monthly active user” mean?
In general, a monthly active user (MAU) is an account or user that was active at least once during a monthly measurement period. Microsoft’s public announcements cited here do not explain enough of the methodology to treat the figure as a verified count of unique people. The disclosures do not specify how free, education, guest, multi-tenant, or multiple-account activity is handled.
Most importantly, MAUs are not interchangeable with other business metrics:
- Paid seats: The MAU figure does not say how many people or organizations paid for Teams.
- Daily active users or engagement: A monthly count does not reveal how frequently people use the product or how much time they spend in it.
- Customers, organizations, or tenants: Microsoft reported users, not businesses.
- Other Teams products: The total is not the number of Teams Phone PSTN users, Teams Premium seats, or Teams Rooms deployments.
It is an official company-reported usage figure, not an independently audited market measurement in the cited disclosures.

Why did Teams grow so quickly?
Microsoft 365 distribution lowered adoption friction
Teams sits within Microsoft’s broader productivity and enterprise ecosystem, alongside tools and services such as Outlook, Office apps, SharePoint, OneDrive, and Microsoft identity and administration. For organizations already procuring and managing Microsoft software, that connection can make Teams easier to evaluate, deploy, and govern. Microsoft has described Teams as a place for users to meet, call, chat, collaborate, and conduct business in its FY24 Q4 earnings materials.
Distribution is not the same as usage, however. A product’s presence in an organization’s software arrangements does not establish that every licensed employee actively uses it, nor does the MAU figure reveal which users arrived through a bundle or a separate purchase.
Remote and hybrid work expanded its role
Microsoft said Teams had grown to 270 million MAUs over the preceding two and a half years when it announced that figure in October 2022. That period included the pandemic-era expansion of remote and hybrid work, which increased reliance on digital meetings and collaboration. The later rise to more than 300 million should not be attributed to the pandemic alone: Teams also serves ongoing chat, calling, collaboration, and business-process needs.

One product covers several workplace jobs
Teams combines chat, group collaboration, meetings, voice calling, file and document workflows, third-party apps, custom business applications, meeting-room hardware, and paid add-ons. That breadth can make it useful as a shared workplace hub rather than a meeting-only tool. It can also create administration and governance work because channels, files, apps, guests, meetings, and policies intersect.

Microsoft said in April 2023 that nearly 60% of its enterprise Teams customers had bought Teams Phone, Teams Rooms, or Teams Premium. In its July 2023 earnings materials, Microsoft separately reported more than 17 million Teams Phone PSTN users, more than 600,000 Teams Premium seats five months after launch, more than 1,900 apps in the Teams Store, more than 145,000 custom line-of-business apps built by enterprises, and Teams Rooms use at more than 70% of Fortune 500 companies. These are different measures with different scopes; none is a component of the 300 million MAU count. Microsoft reported the figures in its FY23 Q4 earnings materials.
How does Teams compare with Slack and Zoom?
The 300 million milestone does not establish that Teams had more users than Slack or Zoom. The companies disclose different kinds of metrics at different times, and user counts, paid customers, meeting participants, and seats are not equivalent. Without contemporaneous figures using comparable definitions, a numerical ranking would create false precision.

| Microsoft Teams | Chat, meetings, calling, collaboration, and Microsoft 365 workflows. | Microsoft reported more than 300 million MAUs in fiscal Q3 2023 and more than 320 million later in 2023 and March 2024. Its public disclosures cited here do not fully specify the MAU methodology. |
| Slack | Workplace messaging and collaboration, with integrations and developer workflows. | A Slack customer, seat, or other reported metric should not be compared directly with Teams MAUs unless the definitions and reporting periods align. |
| Zoom | Video meetings, calling, events, and team collaboration. | Meeting participants, customers, and users may measure different things from Teams MAUs; the metrics are not automatically comparable. |
For a buyer, product fit is more useful than a headline count. Existing Microsoft 365 reliance may favor Teams integration; a standalone messaging experience or a meeting-first requirement may lead an organization to assess Slack or Zoom instead. External collaboration, integrations, administration, and the cost of maintaining overlapping tools also matter.

A large active-user base gives Microsoft a potential distribution channel for premium workplace features, calling, meeting rooms, third-party apps, and custom workflows. It also positions Teams to compete across categories that organizations have traditionally handled with separate chat, conferencing, telephony, intranet, and workflow tools. The add-on and ecosystem figures Microsoft disclosed in 2023 illustrate that platform strategy, but do not by themselves prove revenue or profitability: Microsoft does not report Teams revenue as a standalone public segment in the cited materials.

Teams also became a vehicle for Microsoft’s AI strategy, including AI-assisted meeting features and Copilot-related capabilities. The scale of the audience makes Teams strategically valuable as a place to deliver such tools; the MAU figure alone does not show adoption, business impact, or willingness to pay for them.

What changed after the 300 million milestone?
Microsoft introduced a new Teams desktop app
Microsoft announced general availability of the new Teams desktop app for Windows and Mac in October 2023 and set out a transition from classic Teams after March 31, 2024. In March 2024, Microsoft said more than 75% of MAUs were using new Teams. These are Microsoft-reported figures; the rollout shows the operational challenge of moving a large user base while improving performance, reliability, and resource use. Details are in Microsoft’s new Teams announcement and March 2024 update.
Teams licensing became less bundled in some markets
Microsoft changed licensing for Microsoft 365 and Office 365 in the European Economic Area and Switzerland beginning October 1, 2023, allowing customers to buy suites without Teams and add Teams separately. From April 1, 2024, new enterprise customers in the relevant Microsoft 365 and Office 365 enterprise structure generally needed separate Teams and suite SKUs; regional and plan-specific exceptions apply. Microsoft’s European policy announcement and licensing documentation describe the rules and scope.
These changes matter to interpreting growth: the 2022–23 milestones came during a period when Teams was closely associated with Microsoft 365, while separate licensing makes standalone demand more explicit for affected purchases. Existing customers with qualifying subscriptions from before the changes were generally allowed, under Microsoft’s stated terms, to continue using, renewing, or adjusting Teams-included subscriptions.

- How many Teams users are paying, or how many paid seats are active.
- Average time spent, frequency of use, retention, or churn.
- How many people use Teams exclusively rather than alongside another collaboration service.
- How much activity comes from particular regions, beyond the later disclosure of 181 markets and 44 languages.
- How much Teams contributes to Microsoft revenue or profit.
- Whether Teams has displaced email, Slack, Zoom, telephony, or intranet software in any given organization.
For an organization evaluating Teams, the milestone is evidence of broad reach—not a substitute for checking whether the service fits its own licensing, calling, security, compliance, external-collaboration, and administration needs. The licensing rules also depend on geography, customer type, and plan, so historical assumptions about what a Microsoft 365 subscription includes should be checked against Microsoft’s current documentation.
