Microsoft Said Bing Passed 100 Million Daily Active Users in 2023

Microsoft’s March 2023 claim that Bing passed 100 million daily active users covered the overall search service, not Bing Chat. Here’s what the company’s early engagement figures can—and cannot—show.

In March 2023, Microsoft said Bing had passed 100 million daily active users. The figure covered Bing as a whole—including the existing search service and its new AI-powered preview—not 100 million people using Bing Chat each day. Microsoft did not publish a detailed methodology, so the milestone is best understood as a company-reported snapshot of early interest, not an independently verified or current user count.

What Microsoft announced

Yusuf Mehdi, then a senior Microsoft executive overseeing consumer and search-related products, announced the milestone roughly one month after the AI-powered Bing preview launched. Microsoft described the total as usage of the combined “new and old” Bing service. Engadget’s contemporaneous report covered the announcement; Thurrott’s report also made clear that the figure applied to Bing overall.

The new Bing combined conventional search results with AI-generated answers, conversational chat and content-generation features. Microsoft presented it as a search-and-answer experience, with access through Edge and Bing-related mobile apps, rather than as a standalone chatbot. The 100 million figure was therefore not a count of Bing Chat users.

What the early AI usage figures showed

Microsoft reported that the preview had attracted millions of active users, but did not disclose an exact preview-user total in the cited announcement. It said about one-third of preview users were new to Bing, and about one-third of daily preview users used Chat daily. Those are separate subsets: the latter does not mean one-third of all 100 million Bing daily users were chatting.

Microsoft also reported more than 45 million chats during the preview’s first month, about three chats per chat session on average, and that 15% of chat sessions involved generating new content. These are company-reported engagement measures. A chat session is not the same as a unique person or a daily active user.

What “daily active users” can and cannot tell you

Microsoft’s announcement did not provide a full public definition of a daily active user or explain how it counted people across accounts, devices or sessions. It also did not spell out how usage through Windows, Edge or other integrations was treated, whether the total included enterprise or education use, or how automated traffic was handled. Without those details, the number cannot be independently reproduced from the announcement.

DAUs are also not interchangeable with search queries, chat sessions, page views, registered accounts or monthly active users. The figure does not tell us that 100 million people searched extensively, chose Bing as their primary search engine, or used Chat. Nor can it be converted into a market-share percentage without a comparable measure and a defined geography and period.

Why the milestone mattered—and what it did not prove

A sign of renewed interest

The reported share of preview users who were new to Bing suggested that the AI launch helped put the service in front of people who had not previously used it. That is evidence of early trial, not proof that those users left another search engine or kept using Bing over time.

Growth involved more than chat

Microsoft pointed to Edge growth and improvements to search relevance alongside the new AI experience. It attributed some relevance improvements to its Prometheus-based approach, presenting that work as a factor in users conducting more searches. These were Microsoft’s explanations of the growth, not independently established causal findings. The figures do not isolate how much activity came from AI, Edge distribution, conventional search improvements or their combination.

At launch, Microsoft also made Bing available through mobile apps, widening the ways people could try the experience. Together, the browser and app presence made Bing’s growth a distribution story as well as a product story.

A large number did not mean parity with Google

Microsoft characterized Bing as a “small, low, single digit share player.” That company description is an essential counterweight to the headline number: a service can pass 100 million daily users and still remain far behind a larger competitor. The announcement did not establish a specific change in search-market share or show that Bing had displaced Google at scale.

Usage was not proof of commercial success

The reported figures showed activity, not advertising revenue, revenue per user, profitability or the cost of running the AI experience. They also did not establish long-term retention. Acquisition (trying Bing), activation (using Chat), retention (returning over time), market share and commercial value are distinct outcomes; the announcement supplied early signals about the first two, not evidence settling the others.

What the historical Chat limits add

During the early preview, Microsoft was adjusting limits as it addressed lower-quality or inaccurate responses in extended conversations. A contemporaneous account reported a limit of 10 chats per session and 120 questions per day, and noted Microsoft’s acknowledgment that the chatbot could begin hallucinating after 15 or more conversational turns. These were limits and reliability concerns from that 2023 period, not current usage rules. Thurrott’s account reports those details.

How to read the claim today

The 100 million figure belongs to Microsoft’s March 2023 announcement. It is not evidence that Bing still has that many daily active users today, and the announcement did not establish a lasting reversal in search competition. Its defensible significance is narrower: shortly after adding generative AI features, Microsoft reported substantial early attention for Bing, while leaving open how much of that interest would persist or translate into business results.
