In the US, Office Home 2024 costs $149.99 and includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote for one PC or Mac. Office Home & Business 2024 costs $249.99 and adds Outlook plus commercial-use rights. Choose Microsoft 365 instead if you need multiple devices, cloud storage, shared family access, ongoing feature updates or subscription-linked AI tools.

What Office 2024 is—and what it is not
Office 2024 is a perpetual license: you pay once for the release you purchase and may continue using it under Microsoft’s license terms. It is not an automatically renewing subscription. However, “lifetime Office” does not mean free upgrades forever. Office 2024 receives security updates and bug fixes, but major future Office releases and continuing feature upgrades are not included. A new major version would require another purchase.

The installer may be downloaded after purchase, but the licensed consumer product is not free. Avoid torrent downloads, cracked installers, activation scripts and “pre-activated” packages. They can contain malware, steal account credentials or leave you with an invalid license.
Office 2024 is also different from Microsoft 365, which combines Office applications with cloud storage, multi-device access, continuing features and other subscription services.
Office 2024 features
Word
Word 2024 includes a refreshed visual design, updated interface elements, improved navigation and search, accessibility improvements and compatibility with current document formats. It is a stable desktop release rather than a continuously evolving version: Microsoft 365 subscribers may receive newer features that do not arrive in Office 2024.
Excel
Excel 2024 adds or improves capabilities including new functions for text and arrays, easier picture pasting, the IMAGE function, dynamic-array charts that update when arrays recalculate and performance improvements when several workbooks are open. These improvements do not guarantee access to every Excel function Microsoft introduces later for Microsoft 365.

PowerPoint
PowerPoint 2024 includes Cameo, which lets you place a live camera feed in a slide, and Recording Studio capabilities for recording narration, animations, transitions and inking. Controls and feature availability can differ between Windows and Mac, and Microsoft 365 may receive newer presentation features first.
Outlook
Outlook is available in Office Home & Business 2024, not Office Home 2024. Microsoft highlights improved search across emails, files, people and events, accessibility checking for email and customizable swipe gestures in Outlook for Mac.
OneNote
Both consumer editions include OneNote. Microsoft highlights an enhanced inking experience and a full-screen, pen-focused view.
AI and Copilot
Office 2024 should not be treated as equivalent to the current Microsoft 365 experience. The perpetual purchase does not include Microsoft 365’s complete continuing AI, Copilot and cloud-service package. Specific controls can vary by application and configuration, so the safest distinction is that subscription-linked Microsoft 365 benefits are not included automatically with Office 2024.

How to download and install Office 2024 safely
- Buy from Microsoft or an authorized retailer. Keep the receipt and product information.
- Redeem the product key, if supplied. Associate it with the Microsoft account you intend to use. This account becomes important for installation and future license management.
- Open Microsoft’s account services page: account.microsoft.com/services.
- Sign in with the purchasing account. Locate the Office 2024 purchase under Services & subscriptions.
- Select Install or the equivalent download control and run the installer for your operating system.
- Open Word, Excel or another included app after installation.
- Sign in with the same Microsoft account to complete activation.
Microsoft may change account-page labels and layout. If the purchase is legitimate but the installation control is missing, do not substitute a random ISO or third-party activation tool.
If Office 2024 does not appear in your account
- Confirm that you are signed in to the account used during purchase.
- Check Services & subscriptions.
- Verify that you bought Office 2024 rather than a Microsoft 365 trial or another Office edition.
- Search the confirmation email and check which account received the order.
- If you bought from a retailer, confirm that the key was redeemed successfully.
- Close other Office installers, restart the computer and try again.
- Contact Microsoft Support if the purchase is visible but the Install option is still unavailable.
System requirements and compatibility
Windows
Microsoft lists Windows 10 and later for Office 2024. That does not mean Windows 10 itself remains supported: Microsoft ended normal Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. In September 2026, Windows 11 is the preferable choice when the computer supports it. Office compatibility and operating-system support are separate issues.
Mac
Office 2024 is available for Mac and supports the three most recent macOS versions according to Microsoft’s launch information. Because Apple’s supported-version window moves as new macOS releases arrive, check Microsoft’s current system-requirements page before buying or installing.

A Microsoft account and internet connection are required for setup and activation. Office 2024 is not an activation-free offline package. Many core tasks can be performed offline after installation, but connectivity may be needed for activation, updates, support and connected services.

Office 2024 can connect to some Microsoft 365 services while supported, but that does not give you the full Microsoft 365 subscription bundle or its storage allowance.

At the listed US prices, $149.99 for Office Home 2024 equals roughly 15 months of Microsoft 365 Personal at $9.99 per month. The $249.99 Home & Business price equals roughly 25 months of that subscription. This is only a cash-flow comparison: Microsoft 365 also includes cloud storage, multi-device access, continuing features and services that Office 2024 does not.
Microsoft 365 Family was listed at $12.99 per month and is designed for up to six people. For business users, Microsoft 365 Apps for business was listed at $8.25 per user per month when paid yearly. Prices and plan benefits can change, so confirm current terms before purchasing.
Which option should you buy?
- Choose Office Home 2024 if you need Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote on one computer for home or school use and strongly prefer paying once.
- Choose Office Home & Business 2024 if you need Outlook or commercial-use rights and want to avoid a recurring subscription.
- Choose Microsoft 365 Personal if one person uses several devices, needs cloud storage or wants the latest features and subscription-linked services.
- Choose Microsoft 365 Family if multiple household members need access.
- Choose Microsoft 365 Apps for business if business administration, cloud storage and continuously updated desktop apps matter more than perpetual ownership.
If you already pay for Microsoft 365, buying Office 2024 usually adds little unless you are intentionally ending the subscription, need a perpetual license or have a separate licensing requirement.

Common purchase and installation traps
Beware of suspicious “lifetime keys.” A very low price may indicate a previously redeemed, region-restricted, volume-licensed or unauthorized key. Be especially cautious when a seller offers an “enterprise” or “MSDN” code, provides no proper invoice, asks for your Microsoft password or wants to activate the product through remote-access software.
Do not publish or send your product key to strangers. Redeem it to the correct Microsoft account and retain proof of purchase.
Installing alongside Microsoft 365 or older Office
Microsoft 365, Office 2024 and older Office releases can create licensing, installer or update-channel confusion when installed together. An older installation may need to be removed if the installer detects a conflict. Back up important documents first. Uninstalling Office normally does not delete personal files in Documents, OneDrive or other storage locations, but Outlook requires extra care.

Alternatives
LibreOffice is a free, open-source suite that can work with many Microsoft Office file formats. Compatibility may vary with complex Excel workbooks, macros, advanced formatting and Microsoft-specific workflows.
Google Workspace is a cloud-first option built around browser collaboration and Google Drive. It may be less suitable if you require Microsoft desktop file fidelity, Outlook desktop workflows or robust offline desktop functionality.
Final verdict
Office 2024 is worth buying when you want a fixed desktop suite on one computer, prefer an upfront cost and do not need Microsoft 365’s cloud, device-sharing and continuous-update benefits. Office Home 2024 is the economical fit for home or school use; Home & Business 2024 justifies its higher price only when Outlook or commercial-use rights matter. For multiple devices, several users, cloud storage, current features or Copilot-related services, Microsoft 365 is generally the more suitable choice.
