On December 5, 2025, TrendForce reported that Dell was preparing price increases of roughly 15% to 20%, while Lenovo reportedly told customers that existing quotations and pricing guidelines would expire on January 1, 2026. Those reports described planned or channel-level changes, not a universal U.S. retail price announcement.
The underlying pressure came from a broader memory squeeze connected partly to artificial-intelligence infrastructure. Suppliers were prioritizing server memory and high-bandwidth memory (HBM) for AI systems, leaving tighter supply and higher costs for PC memory, SSD storage, and eventually some CPUs. By August 2026, the December warning was historical: actual prices depended on the model, configuration, inventory, retailer, promotion, region, and buyer type.

What Dell and Lenovo reportedly changed
TrendForce reported on December 5, 2025, that Dell was preparing increases of 15% to 20%, potentially beginning in mid-December. The report attributed the move to industry sources and described it as a planned adjustment—not a public promise that every product in Dell’s portfolio would rise by the same percentage.
The same report said Lenovo customers were warned that existing quotations and pricing guidelines would expire on January 1, 2026. That is a quote reset, not confirmation of a flat 20% increase on every Lenovo laptop or desktop. It would matter most to business and enterprise buyers who purchase through formal quotations, negotiated pricing, or fleet contracts.

Later coverage reported that Dell and Lenovo laptop prices rose by as much as 20% around the beginning of 2026, but the available evidence does not establish a single, company-wide increase across all U.S. consumer models. A list-price change, an enterprise quote adjustment, and the price a shopper sees after a retailer discount are different things.
Why AI can make ordinary PCs more expensive
AI data centers use enormous quantities of specialized hardware. AI accelerators commonly pair with high-bandwidth memory (HBM), while servers also consume large amounts of conventional DRAM. HBM is not interchangeable with the DDR5, LPDDR5, or other memory installed in a typical laptop. The connection is competition for manufacturing capacity, advanced packaging, testing, and supplier attention.
As AI companies and cloud providers commit to large, often long-term orders, memory manufacturers have an incentive to prioritize server and HBM products. TrendForce said in January 2026 that suppliers were reallocating advanced capacity toward server and HBM products to support AI-server demand.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
That reallocation can tighten the market for PC components even though AI systems are not simply “using all the laptop RAM.” The effects can reach:
- DDR4 and DDR5 system memory;
- LPDDR memory used in thin laptops;
- NAND flash used in SSDs;
- SSD controllers and storage modules;
- CPUs, particularly entry-level or older notebook processors;
- GPUs and graphics memory in gaming systems.
AI demand is therefore one major contributor, not the only possible cause. Supplier production decisions, inventory levels, tariffs, currency movements, logistics, product launches, and ordinary changes in discounts can also affect the price of a finished PC.

What changed during early 2026
The component market became more difficult after the original December warning. TrendForce projected on February 2, 2026, that PC DRAM contract prices could rise by more than 100% quarter over quarter in the first quarter. That was a forecast for component contracts, not a prediction that retail laptops would rise by the same amount.
On March 10, 2026, TrendForce reported tightening notebook DRAM and NAND supplies and additional CPU cost pressure. It said some entry-level and older-generation Intel notebook CPUs had reportedly risen by more than 15%, adding to the bill-of-materials problem.

1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThese reports support the conclusion that manufacturers faced genuine upward pressure. They do not prove that every Dell or Lenovo product followed an identical price curve. Manufacturers can absorb some costs, use older inventory, renegotiate supply, reduce discounts, change specifications, or apply increases only to selected models.
Why a component increase does not equal a 20% PC increase
A computer’s price reflects much more than its memory. The bill of materials may include the processor, memory, SSD, display, battery, motherboard, power supply, chassis, cooling system, operating-system license, assembly, warranty, distribution, financing, and marketing.
If one component becomes dramatically more expensive, the manufacturer can respond in several ways:

- absorb part of the increase and accept a lower margin;
- raise the list price but preserve some retailer discounts;
- reduce promotions rather than visibly raising the list price;
- use inventory purchased before prices rose;
- offer less RAM or storage at the same headline price;
- shift customers toward higher-margin configurations;
- pass different costs through direct, retail, and enterprise channels.
That is why even a 70% or 100% increase in a memory component does not automatically produce a matching increase in the price of a finished laptop.
Which buyers face the greatest exposure?
Budget and mainstream laptop shoppers
Budget systems may be especially vulnerable because memory and storage represent a larger share of their total cost. Watch for a laptop that appears unchanged in price but moves from 16GB of RAM to 8GB, or from a 1TB SSD to 512GB. Such a “quiet downgrade” can be more important than a modest list-price increase.
For a new general-purpose Windows laptop, 16GB is a sensible minimum for many buyers who expect several years of use. Consider 32GB for demanding multitasking, software development, content creation, or local AI workloads. These are practical buying guidelines, not universal requirements.
Business and enterprise buyers
Businesses may experience the problem first through shorter quote-validity periods, substitutions, and contract resets. A company should ask:
- How long is the quotation valid?
- Can the vendor substitute a different memory or SSD configuration?
- Is the quoted price locked after a purchase order?
- Are warranty, support, deployment, and management services included?
- What is the cost of delaying the refresh, including security, compatibility, and support risks?
A retail price that appears stable does not necessarily mean a fleet buyer’s negotiated price or availability is unchanged.

Gaming PC and workstation buyers
Gaming systems face memory and SSD pressure, while graphics cards add separate GPU and VRAM costs. Workstations may also be affected by higher-memory configurations and professional graphics hardware. Compare the complete specification rather than assuming that an “AI PC” or workstation label represents good value.
DIY desktop builders
DIY buyers feel component volatility directly. Retail RAM and SSD prices can move faster than the price of a prebuilt computer, particularly when an OEM has older inventory or negotiated supply. At other times, a prebuilt may hide cost pressure by shipping with less memory or storage than earlier configurations.
Compare a prebuilt and a DIY system using the same CPU, GPU, RAM, SSD, operating-system license, warranty, and assembly cost. Do not compare only the advertised processor name.

How to avoid paying for a downgraded PC
- Check the exact model or configuration number. Retail listings can group systems with different memory, storage, displays, and processors.
- Confirm RAM capacity and upgradeability. Soldered LPDDR memory generally cannot be replaced later. Buy enough capacity at the outset.
- Check the SSD. Verify both capacity and whether the drive can be replaced. A 512GB drive may be inadequate if you store games, photos, or video locally.
- Compare generations. A previous-generation business laptop with 16GB of RAM and a replaceable SSD may offer better value than a newer model with less memory.
- Value the warranty. Business support, repair options, battery replacement, and return terms can outweigh a small upfront saving.
- Do not pay automatically for “AI PC” branding. Identify the NPU, RAM capacity, supported software, and whether your actual workload benefits from local AI processing.
- Match the GPU to the job. A discrete GPU may be unnecessary for office work but important for gaming, 3D applications, or local AI models.
Alternatives if new prices are unattractive
Compare Dell and Lenovo with HP, ASUS, Acer, Apple, Framework, and reputable system integrators. No brand is automatically immune to memory and storage costs, but pricing and inventory can differ substantially.
A previous-generation business laptop, manufacturer-outlet system, or certified refurbished computer can be a practical alternative. Review the exact RAM and SSD configuration, warranty, battery condition, return policy, and whether the device remains enrolled in a corporate-management system. Relevant outlet pages include Dell Outlet, Lenovo Outlet, and Apple Certified Refurbished.
If your current computer is otherwise adequate, an SSD replacement, battery replacement, cleaning, or operating-system reinstall may extend its useful life. For compatible hardware, check upgrade vendors such as Crucial, Kingston, or Samsung Storage. Compatibility must be confirmed by the computer’s exact model; upgrades cannot fix an obsolete processor, unsupported operating system, failing motherboard, or soldered-memory limitation.

What to watch next
The most useful signals are not dramatic headlines but changes in:
- memory and NAND contract prices;
- OEM quote-validity periods;
- PC shipment and inventory forecasts;
- SSD, CPU, GPU, and display costs;
- the baseline RAM included in new laptops;
- new manufacturing capacity that could ease supply.
Retail prices may stabilize even while component markets remain expensive if manufacturers use inventory or reduce promotions. Conversely, a buyer may see a higher street price before a formal manufacturer announcement if discounted inventory runs out.
The verdict
The Dell and Lenovo price story is credible, but its most repeated version is too broad. Dell was reported to be preparing a 15%–20% increase in December 2025, and Lenovo was reported to be resetting quotations from January 1, 2026. Subsequent industry reporting supported a broader memory, storage, and CPU cost squeeze in early 2026.
The accurate consumer takeaway is narrower: AI-driven demand for server memory and HBM contributed to supply pressure that made PCs more expensive or less generously configured, but it did not establish a universal 20% increase on every Dell or Lenovo computer. In 2026, buy when you need a machine, protect yourself against downgrades by checking the full specification, and compare the actual deal across brands, refurbished stock, upgrades, and prebuilts.
