Microsoft joined the Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS Formula 1 Team as a multiyear partner, announced on January 22, 2026. It is designated a Principal Partner, not the team’s title sponsor: PETRONAS retains that role. The partnership combines Microsoft cloud and AI technology with tools the team uses for engineering, analysis and collaboration.
What Microsoft’s partnership with Mercedes F1 means
Microsoft and the Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS F1 Team announced a multiyear partnership on January 22, 2026. The team’s partner directory lists Microsoft as a Principal Partner and PETRONAS as Title Partner. Those are distinct designations: Microsoft is a major team partner, but it has not replaced PETRONAS as title partner.
The announcements do not disclose the partnership’s price or exact duration. Calling it multiyear does not establish a particular number of seasons or a publicly known sponsorship fee.
What Microsoft technology the team says it will use
Microsoft’s announcement describes a technology relationship spanning cloud computing, AI, engineering software and workplace collaboration. The team says Microsoft 365 and GitHub already support engineering and operational workflows at its Brackley and Brixworth headquarters and at trackside, and that it plans to expand its use of Microsoft 365.

Azure, AI and data-heavy work
The announcement identifies Microsoft Azure and its AI capabilities for high-performance computing and data work, including simulation, performance analysis, race-strategy modelling and analytics across teams. The team’s partner listing similarly describes cloud and AI support for operations from factory to racetrack, including race engineering, operations and collaboration.
Microsoft 365 and GitHub
Microsoft 365 and GitHub serve a different part of the partnership: the team describes them as tools for engineering and operational workflows and collaboration. The announcement says Microsoft 365 use will expand; it does not provide a specific rollout schedule or quantify the effect of that expansion.

Why the announcement highlights data
Microsoft says each Mercedes-AMG F1 car carries more than 400 sensors and generates over 1.1 million data points per second. These are figures published by Microsoft in its January 22, 2026 announcement, not independently audited measurements established by the sources cited here.
That data context helps explain the announced focus on computing, simulation and analysis. It does not, on its own, prove that the partnership has improved lap times, strategy decisions or race results. The announcements describe intended uses and benefits, not independently measured competitive gains.
