Revenue rose 15% to $64.7 billion for the quarter ended June 30, 2024, while Azure and Office delivered solid growth. But AI infrastructure was consuming substantial capital, Surface and Xbox hardware were weak, and Activision Blizzard made gaming growth look stronger than the underlying business alone.
Microsoft FY2024 Q4 at a glance
Microsoft announced its results on July 30, 2024. The following figures are the company’s GAAP results unless identified otherwise; year-over-year growth rates are reported rates. Constant-currency growth adjusts for foreign-exchange movements and should not be conflated with reported growth.

| Microsoft segment | FY2024 Q4 revenue | Year-over-year change |
|---|---|---|
| Productivity and Business Processes | $20.3 billion | +11% |
| Intelligent Cloud | $28.5 billion | +19% |
| More Personal Computing | $15.9 billion | +14% |
More Personal Computing’s increase was materially influenced by the Activision Blizzard acquisition. The segment totals are revenue categories, not a breakdown of each product’s profit.
Azure was the quarter’s central growth engine
Intelligent Cloud rose 19%, with server products and cloud services revenue up 21%. Azure and other cloud services grew 29% at reported rates and 30% in constant currency. Management said AI contributed eight percentage points to Azure’s growth. That is a contribution to the growth rate—not a claim that AI made up eight percent of Azure revenue, or that all the remaining growth came from any single source.
Demand was not the only constraint: Microsoft said demand for Azure AI services exceeded available capacity. Management reported more than 60,000 Azure AI customers, up nearly 60% year over year, and 36,000 Azure Arc customers, up 90%. Those customer counts indicate adoption, not customer profitability or Microsoft’s margin on the services.
Azure’s growth also reflects broader cloud consumption, migration, and hybrid services. It should not be treated as a pure AI metric. The available figures show meaningful AI-related demand but do not isolate AI revenue or profit across Microsoft.

AI has traction, but its return is not yet disclosed
Microsoft’s AI economics are best assessed across four layers rather than as one reported business:
- Infrastructure: Azure GPU capacity and AI services can generate consumption revenue, but require data centers, networking, processors, and accelerators.
- Applications: Microsoft 365 Copilot, Dynamics Copilot, Security Copilot, and GitHub Copilot offer potential paid upgrades, but Microsoft did not disclose standalone revenue or profit for Microsoft 365 Copilot.
- Indirect value: AI features could support retention, premium-plan mix, larger cloud commitments, or additional seats. The quarter did not quantify these effects separately.
- Costs: Building and operating capacity brings capital spending, leases, depreciation, and model-serving expense. Microsoft attributed some pressure on cloud margins to scaling AI infrastructure.
For FY2024, Microsoft Cloud gross margin was 71%, down slightly; that measure includes Azure, Office 365 Commercial, commercial LinkedIn, Dynamics 365, and other commercial cloud properties, so it is not an Azure-only margin. Microsoft did not publish a consolidated AI margin or standalone Copilot profit figure. Azure AI demand is evidence of commercial traction, not proof that the entire AI investment was already paying for itself. See Microsoft’s performance and margin detail and segment and cloud metrics.
Office remains the proven subscription business
Office Commercial products and cloud services revenue increased 12%, while Office 365 Commercial revenue rose 13%. Commercial Microsoft 365 seats grew 7%. Management said higher-priced E5 and Copilot subscriptions contributed to revenue growth, partly offset by AI infrastructure costs; it did not give separate growth contributions for E5 and Copilot.
Consumer Microsoft 365 revenue rose 3%, and subscribers reached 82.5 million, up 10% year over year. That is a separate consumer measure from commercial seat growth. Neither consumer subscribers nor commercial seats reveal how many customers adopted Copilot. The established subscription base is a recurring-revenue engine; Copilot is an emerging upsell whose adoption and economics were not fully disclosed in this quarter.

Windows was not the main event
Windows commercial products and cloud services revenue rose 11%, while Windows OEM revenue increased only 4%. The commercial category includes broader licensing and cloud-related products, so its 11% growth cannot be assigned wholly to Windows 11 adoption. Microsoft said PC-market conditions were broadly as expected.
Microsoft claimed Windows 11 active devices were up 50% year over year, but the quarter’s materials do not establish an independently verified installed-base measure. Copilot+ PCs launched too late in the quarter to meaningfully affect results through June 30. Consequently, FY2024 Q4 cannot show whether that PC platform would drive durable demand.
Surface revenue fell again, with profitability undisclosed
Microsoft’s Devices revenue, primarily Surface, declined 11%. Thurrott’s July 31, 2024 analysis described this as the eighth consecutive year-over-year quarterly decline. Microsoft does not disclose a standalone Surface income statement, so revenue weakness does not by itself establish the product line’s profit or loss.
The quarter included new Surface Pro and Surface Laptop models using Qualcomm Snapdragon X chips and the Copilot+ PC label, but their late-quarter launch left little time to affect reported sales. Management’s outlook at the time pointed to low-to-mid-single-digit Devices growth in the following quarter; that was a historical forecast, not a present-day outlook.

The strategic question is whether premium positioning can sustain attractive economics with lower volume, and whether ARM-based devices broaden Windows demand. The FY2024 Q4 figures do not answer that: Microsoft did not disclose Surface margins, unit sales, or the contribution of the new models.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Activision lifted gaming revenue while Xbox hardware slumped
Microsoft’s gaming results need to be separated into acquired content growth and console hardware performance. Thurrott reported gaming revenue growth of 44%; Microsoft said Xbox content and services revenue rose 61%, with approximately 58 percentage points of that increase attributable to Activision Blizzard. Xbox hardware revenue fell 42%.
| Reported improvement | What the quarter establishes |
|---|---|
| Gaming revenue +44% | Thurrott’s breakdown; acquisition effects materially boosted the comparison. |
| Xbox content and services +61% | Microsoft attributed approximately 58 percentage points of growth to Activision Blizzard. |
| Xbox hardware −42% | Microsoft reported a sharp year-over-year decline. |
Activision contributed roughly three percentage points to company revenue growth but was a two-point drag on operating-income growth in the quarter. Microsoft also reported approximately $938 million in Activision-related purchase accounting, integration, and transaction costs. The acquisition expanded revenue and content reach, but it did not immediately translate into stronger operating-income growth. These figures do not establish Xbox’s standalone profitability; Microsoft does not publish a complete Xbox profit-and-loss statement.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The result points to a changing strategic question: can Xbox create value as a broader content-and-services business across console, PC, cloud, and other platforms, even as console hardware weakens? Game Pass, cross-platform distribution, and a larger catalog may extend audience reach, but the quarter cannot establish whether they compensate financially for falling hardware sales. Success would need to be judged across engagement, recurring revenue, content economics, and returns on the acquisition—not console sales alone.

Cash flow can fund the build-out; returns are the test
Microsoft generated $37.2 billion of operating cash flow and $23.3 billion of free cash flow in FY2024 Q4; free cash flow was up 18% year over year. Full-year operating cash flow was approximately $119 billion. The cash-flow statements provide the underlying totals, while management rounded the annual figure to more than $119 billion in its call commentary.
Capital expenditures including finance leases were $19 billion in the quarter, nearly all tied to cloud and AI. Management said roughly half went to long-term data-center infrastructure and the remainder primarily to CPUs and GPUs. Those investments address capacity constraints, but they also make the business more capital-intensive. The key questions are how quickly capacity is filled, whether AI workloads earn acceptable margins, and how depreciation and lease commitments affect future earnings. Capex does not automatically produce proportional Azure growth.
Microsoft had substantial cash-generating capacity to finance AI infrastructure in this quarter. The unresolved issue is capital efficiency: converting demand into durable revenue and adequate returns. See Microsoft’s cash-flow statements and the earnings-call materials.
What Microsoft’s FY2025 outlook said at the time
On July 30, 2024, Microsoft forecast Azure and other cloud services growth of around 30%–31% for the next quarter, while warning that capacity constraints would continue. It expected ongoing cloud and AI investment. Management also forecast low-to-mid-single-digit Devices growth, mid-30% gaming revenue growth, and mid-50% Xbox content-and-services growth, with acquisition effects influencing gaming comparisons; Xbox hardware was expected to decline year over year. These were historical forecasts issued in 2024 and should not be mistaken for current guidance.
What the quarter did—and did not—prove
The quarter demonstrated durable strength in commercial cloud and Office, alongside real demand for Azure AI. It also showed why a headline growth rate is not enough to judge strategy: AI expansion required heavy infrastructure spending, and the company did not disclose standalone Copilot profitability. Activision made gaming and content growth look stronger while hardware fell sharply, and Surface remained under pressure without separately reported product-line profit.
For investors assessing the business rather than treating one quarter as a verdict, the useful follow-through measures are Azure growth and capacity commentary, Microsoft Cloud gross margin, AI customer spending and application adoption, commercial seat growth, Devices revenue, Xbox hardware, gaming growth excluding acquisition effects, capital spending, and free cash flow. This analysis describes company performance, not a recommendation to buy or sell Microsoft shares.
