Microsoft and Obsidian revised the announced U.S. launch price of The Outer Worlds 2 Standard Edition from $79.99 to $69.99 in July 2025. The game has since launched, on October 29, 2025, so it is no longer upcoming. The price change also prompted different preorder adjustments depending on the store.
What changed about the price?
Obsidian announced the revision on July 23, 2025, after the Standard Edition had been announced at $79.99. Xbox Wire’s June 8 announcement now carries an editor’s note confirming the revised $69.99 price. Those figures are U.S. dollar prices; they do not establish what every buyer paid in another region, or what a retailer charges today. The official announcements do not explain the company’s specific reason for lowering the price. Obsidian’s post uses a fictional Earth Directorate voice and jokes about receiving an “SOS” concerning pricing; it does not provide a named executive’s explanation or establish a business motive.
How did the change affect preorders?
Obsidian’s July 2025 notice described different handling by storefront. These are the procedures it announced at the time, not a statement of current refund eligibility or instructions for resolving an old transaction. Read Obsidian’s notice for its original guidance.

- Steam: Obsidian said transactions would be reversed and charged again at the lower price, with the difference expected to be refunded to the buyer’s Steam Wallet.
- Battle.net: Existing Standard Edition preorders would be canceled; customers who still wanted to preorder would need to place a new order.
- Xbox and Windows: The notice said customers would initially be charged $80, then receive the $10 difference as an account credit. It also outlined timing for price updates.
- PlayStation: Obsidian said the difference would be refunded to customers’ PlayStation wallets and that Sony would notify affected customers.
If you are checking a past order now, review the transaction and contact the relevant storefront’s support team. The 2025 announcement alone cannot confirm whether a particular refund or credit was completed.
What did each edition include?
Xbox Wire announced two editions and their U.S. prices. Premium cost $30 more than Standard at the announced list prices; its added content was digital extras, early access, and a pass for two future story expansions.

Xbox Wire also announced a $29.99 Standard or Game Pass upgrade at the time. That announcement does not establish whether the upgrade is currently available at that price. Is the game still upcoming, and where can you play it?
No. Obsidian Support lists October 29, 2025, as the release date, and Xbox Wire said the game was available that day. Obsidian’s support FAQ lists Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, Battle.net, PlayStation 5, and Steam. Xbox Wire’s launch announcement also identified ROG Xbox Ally handhelds and day-one access through Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass. The $69.99 figure is the revised U.S. Standard Edition price announced for launch, not a promise that every current listing or checkout total will match it. Before you pay, compare the same edition and platform, confirm the seller’s current price and format, and account for any subscription access you already have. Game Pass access is distinct from owning a copy, while Premium’s extra content may matter if you want its expansions and digital extras.
