Microsoft announced three studio closures on May 7, 2024: Arkane Austin, Tango Gameworks and Alpha Dog. A fourth team, Roundhouse, was not shut down; it joined ZeniMax Online Studios. Later reporting changed the picture for two of the three closures: Krafton revived Tango Gameworks, and Alpha Dog was reported to be independently owned again, though its current work was unclear.

What Microsoft announced in May 2024

Xbox Game Studios head Matt Booty described the changes as a “reprioritization of titles and resources.” His staff message said Microsoft was prioritizing high-impact titles and investing further in Bethesda’s portfolio and other parts of the business. That is the company’s stated rationale, not evidence that any one game’s sales or reception caused the decisions. Game Informer reproduced Booty’s message on May 7, 2024.

What happened to each studio

Studio Announced outcome Game or work affected Later status reported
Arkane Austin Closed in 2024 Redfall development ended No later reopening is established by the cited reporting.
Tango Gameworks Closed in 2024 Developed Hi-Fi Rush A 2026 report says Krafton revived the studio.
Alpha Dog Closed in 2024 Developed Mighty Doom A 2026 report, citing founder Shawn Woods’s profile, says it was independently owned again; its current work was unclear.
Roundhouse Team joined ZeniMax Online Studios Joined work on The Elder Scrolls Online It was absorbed, not announced as a closure.

The initial outcomes were reported by Ars Technica, Game Developer and Game Informer. The later Tango and Alpha Dog updates were reported by GamesRadar+ in 2026.

What the closures meant for players

Redfall

Microsoft said Redfall’s then-most-recent update would be its last, ending development, but that the game and its servers would remain online. It also said it would make make-good offers to players who had purchased the Hero DLC. Ars Technica’s May 7, 2024 report covered the game’s support plans.

Hi-Fi Rush

Microsoft said Hi-Fi Rush would remain available on its existing platforms when it announced Tango’s closure. Game Developer reported on May 7, 2024 that the game had attracted three million players; that reported player count does not establish profitability or explain the closure.

Mighty Doom

Microsoft announced that Mighty Doom would be sunset on August 7, 2024, with in-game purchases turned off. That was a dated sunset announcement, not a statement that all of Alpha Dog’s other work or assets would necessarily disappear.

Why did Microsoft close the studios?

The explanation available at announcement was Microsoft’s own: a reprioritization of titles and resources, with a focus on selected high-impact titles, Bethesda franchises and other investments. Contemporary coverage noted the contrast between Redfall’s troubled release and Hi-Fi Rush’s reception, but that contrast does not prove either game’s performance caused the decisions. In particular, Game Developer’s reported three-million-player figure for Hi-Fi Rush should not be treated as a sales, revenue or profit measure.
