Microsoft’s Money in Excel service could connect financial accounts and import balances and transactions into an Excel workbook. Microsoft ended that service on June 30, 2023.
In 2026, Excel can still analyze banking activity, but the normal Microsoft 365 subscription does not provide a live bank feed. You can import downloaded transaction files manually, or use a separate third-party service such as Tiller for automatic syncing.

What Money in Excel was
Money in Excel was a Microsoft-provided personal-finance template—not a new edition of Excel. It was offered to Microsoft 365 Personal and Family subscribers in the United States and used a financial-data connection service to link eligible accounts.
The workbook could connect bank, credit-card, investment and loan accounts, then import balances and transaction information. It also included budgeting views, categories, charts, graphs and alerts. Because the result was an Excel workbook, users could customize it with ordinary formulas, tables and other spreadsheet features.

Microsoft introduced Money in Excel in June 2020. That is why older articles may say that Microsoft could automatically bring banking activity into Excel. The statement was historically accurate, but it should not be read as a description of Excel’s current capabilities.
Microsoft’s description of the original feature is available in its Money in Excel documentation.
Why the old bank-sync instructions no longer work
| Date | What happened |
|---|---|
| June 2020 | Microsoft launched Money in Excel as a connected personal-finance template. |
| June 30, 2023 | Microsoft ended the service. |
| 2026 | Old workbooks may still open, but Microsoft’s bank connection no longer refreshes. |
After June 30, 2023, Money in Excel could no longer receive new transactions, update existing transactions, connect new accounts or reconnect accounts that had become disconnected. Previously imported information remained in users’ workbooks, but the live feed stopped working. Microsoft also said it would no longer have access to Money in Excel data.

Can Excel still import bank transactions?
Yes—but importing a file is not the same as automatically syncing an account. Excel continues to support external-data imports through its Get & Transform experience, also known as Power Query. That normally means importing a file or connecting to a supported data source, not signing into a bank through a current Microsoft consumer-banking feature.
The manual method
- Sign in to your bank or card provider’s website.
- Find an option such as Download transactions, Export activity or Download statement.
- Prefer CSV, XLS/XLSX, OFX or QFX when available. These formats are generally more useful for analysis than PDF statements.
- In Excel, open the Data tab and choose the appropriate command, commonly Get Data or From Text/CSV. Labels vary by Excel version, operating system and interface revision.
- Inspect the columns and data types in Power Query or the import preview.
- Load the cleaned data into a worksheet or data model.
- Add categories, formulas, pivot tables or charts as needed.
- Keep the original download and record the date of each import.
Bank export options differ. Some institutions provide only a limited history, while others offer separate formats for accounting or personal-finance software. If the bank offers only PDF statements, look again for a transaction-specific download option. Converting a PDF can work, but the resulting table should be checked carefully.
Check the data before building reports
- Dates: Confirm whether the file uses MM/DD/YYYY, DD/MM/YYYY or ISO YYYY-MM-DD. Regional settings can cause Excel to interpret dates incorrectly.
- Signs: Debits may appear as positive or negative numbers. Inspect transaction type, debit and credit columns, amount signs, running balance and currency before writing formulas.
- Duplicates: Repeating an import can add the same transaction twice. Keep a record of the imported date range and, where possible, use the bank’s transaction identifier.
- Pending items: A pending transaction may change, disappear or appear again when posted.
- Transfers: A transfer between two linked accounts may look like both income and spending unless it is classified separately.
- Refunds and reversals: A refund may not automatically match the original purchase.
- Descriptions: Bank descriptions are often abbreviated or inconsistent, so categories may need manual review.
Microsoft’s current overview of external-data imports and Power Query is in its import and analyze data documentation.

How to get automatic bank syncing into Excel now
For automatic transactions and balances, you generally need a third-party provider or Excel add-in. The provider handles the financial-account connection, while the add-in or service places the resulting data in a workbook.
That means the connection can fail for reasons that have nothing to do with Excel: a bank may change its website, authentication process, API or security requirements. Support also varies by country, institution, account type and login method. Never assume that an advertised list of supported institutions guarantees that your particular account will connect.
Tiller: a spreadsheet-focused option
Tiller Money is a current third-party option designed specifically for users who want automatic financial data in Excel or Google Sheets. Tiller offers an Excel add-in, transaction and balance feeds, templates and customizable workbook-based analysis. Its documentation says it uses Plaid and Yodlee as data providers.
Tiller’s published materials say new users receive a 30-day trial. Its annual price was listed as $99 beginning August 1, 2026; check the provider’s current pricing and terms before subscribing because prices and trial conditions can change.

Tiller is most relevant if you want recurring bank data while retaining control over worksheets, formulas, categories and reports. It is less suitable if you want a free workflow, your institution is unsupported, you do not want to authorize an account aggregator, or you prefer a polished mobile budgeting app instead of maintaining a workbook.

Other Marketplace add-ins
Microsoft’s Marketplace also lists third-party products such as SheetLink and Bank Data Manager. Their listings describe Excel-based bank-transaction importing, but they are not replacements supplied or endorsed by Microsoft. The reviewed information does not establish reliable current pricing for either product, and support should be checked for your specific bank and account type.
Which approach fits your needs?
| Your priority | Best-fit approach | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Occasional analysis or tax review | Download a bank file and import it into Excel | Requires repeating the process and checking duplicates. |
| Automatic data with spreadsheet flexibility | Tiller or a similar Excel feed | Subscription cost, third-party access and possible connection failures. |
| Maximum control over financial data | Manual bank exports | Less convenient and not automatic. |
| Budgeting with minimal workbook maintenance | A dedicated budgeting app | Less freedom to design your own spreadsheet. |
| Reconciliation, reporting and broader financial management | A full personal-finance product such as Quicken | It is a separate software platform rather than an Excel feed. |
| A structured budgeting method | A budgeting-first product such as YNAB | It follows its own workflow instead of providing a blank workbook. |
Quicken Simplifi and Quicken Classic are examples of broader personal-finance products. They may suit readers who value account aggregation, reconciliation, reports or dedicated web and mobile experiences more than keeping Excel as the primary interface. Pricing and offers vary, so use the official pages for current details.
Security and privacy questions to ask
A manual export and an automatic aggregator create different data paths:
Best Value
- Create, edit and style DOCUMENTS, SPREADSHEETS & PRESENTATIONS – all the features that you need to get work done
- Included PDF functions to FILL & SIGN forms, ANNOTATE and password PROTECT your PDF documents
- Compatibility with the most popular file formats - OPEN, EDIT & CREATE new and existing documents
- Manage all your email accounts and efficiently schedule with the inlcuded MAIL & CALENDAR apps
- Lifetime License for 1 Windows PC or Laptop
- Manual export: You download a file and choose where to store it.
- Account aggregation: You authorize a provider to retrieve balances and transactions from selected accounts.
- Workbook storage: Financial data may be stored locally, in OneDrive or in another cloud location.
- Add-in permissions: An Excel add-in may have access to workbook content or connected-service data.
Before connecting an account, ask:
- Who receives the authorization or credentials?
- Is the connection read-only?
- Which aggregator is used?
- Is transaction data stored on the provider’s servers?
- Can access be revoked through the bank?
- What happens when the subscription ends?
- How are multifactor authentication, pending transactions and duplicates handled?
Do not treat a Marketplace listing or vendor statement as a guarantee that every bank connection will work. Review the provider’s privacy policy, permission screen and account-disconnection process. If an automatic feed stops refreshing, check the bank’s status, reauthenticate through the provider, complete any multifactor prompt, and check for changed login or security requirements. Avoid repeatedly deleting and reconnecting accounts until you know how the service handles duplicates. A fresh bank export is a practical temporary fallback.
What about Excel’s linked data types?
They are not a replacement for bank syncing. Excel’s linked data types—such as Stocks, Currencies and Geography—provide information from sources such as Bing and Power BI. They do not connect your personal checking or credit-card account and import its transactions. Microsoft’s documentation on available linked data types describes a different feature.
Does Microsoft 365 include live bank importing?
No—not through the discontinued Money in Excel service. Microsoft 365 Personal and Family were historically associated with Money in Excel, but Microsoft ended that bank-connection feature in 2023. Buying or renewing Microsoft 365 alone should not be expected to restore live bank syncing.

Microsoft no longer provides the Money in Excel bank feed. Excel remains capable of analyzing banking activity, but automatic importing now requires either a manual export workflow or a third-party service. For occasional work, download a CSV or compatible file from your bank and use Excel’s Data tools. For recurring feeds inside a customizable workbook, evaluate an add-in such as Tiller—but check institution support, privacy terms, account coverage and current pricing before connecting your accounts.
