Microsoft and Walmart’s 2018 Partnership: What It Meant for Amazon

The 2018 Microsoft–Walmart deal was a five-year cloud and workplace-technology partnership. Here’s what it covered, why Amazon mattered and what later work does—and doesn’t—prove.

The Microsoft–Walmart partnership behind this headline was announced on July 17, 2018—not in 2026. It was a five-year agreement centered on Microsoft Azure, Microsoft 365, data, AI, IoT and application migration. The companies shared competition with Amazon in cloud computing and retail, but the announced deal was not a joint cashierless-store product or a consumer-facing Amazon Go rival.

What Microsoft and Walmart agreed to

Walmart named Microsoft its preferred and strategic cloud provider under a five-year agreement announced in 2018. The planned work covered Walmart’s family of brands and international businesses, with Microsoft technology intended to support both digital commerce and internal operations. Walmart’s announcement described several connected parts:

  • Azure infrastructure: Walmart planned to move a significant portion of Walmart.com and SamsClub.com to Azure, including cloud-powered checkout. The release did not give a percentage or say the sites would move entirely.
  • Application modernization: The companies intended to assess, develop, support and move hundreds of existing applications toward cloud-native architectures.
  • Data, AI, machine learning and IoT: These technologies were to support retail and supply-chain applications, including examples such as monitoring store heating, ventilation and refrigeration equipment and using machine learning to route trucks.
  • Microsoft 365: Walmart planned a phased rollout of workplace tools for associates and corporate employees, with collaboration and communication among the stated goals.
  • Joint engineering: Walmart and Microsoft engineers were to work together on technology development and migration.

These were announced plans and examples of intended uses, not proof that every workload, store system or vehicle had already been moved or equipped.

Why Amazon was central to the story

For Microsoft, Walmart was a major Azure reference customer

Microsoft was competing with Amazon Web Services (AWS) for cloud workloads. A high-profile retail deployment could demonstrate Azure’s suitability for large-scale commerce, data and operational systems. Microsoft also had an opportunity to bring several parts of its enterprise portfolio into one relationship: cloud infrastructure, workplace software, identity, AI and IoT.

For Walmart, the agreement supported its digital and operating capabilities

Walmart competed with Amazon in online retail and other parts of the shopping experience. The company said cloud capacity could help its digital properties handle demand, support faster development and improve the experience of shopping across digital and physical channels. Data and connected systems also offered potential applications in stores and supply-chain operations. Microsoft provided technology and expertise; Walmart remained the retailer.

That is the useful meaning of the “take on Amazon” framing: two companies with overlapping rivals could benefit from a strategic technology relationship. Contemporary coverage described the shared-rival logic, but the formal announcement presented the deal as a way to accelerate Walmart’s digital transformation—not as a legal alliance against Amazon. Contemporary reporting also discussed the Amazon rivalry and cashierless-store speculation.

Was it a joint cashierless-store project?

No such product was confirmed in the announcement. Contemporary reports linked the companies to speculation about cashierless stores, but that is not evidence that Walmart and Microsoft jointly built an Amazon Go equivalent. Walmart executive Marc Lore was reported to have said Walmart was pursuing its own cashierless-store efforts. The cloud deal could support future retail automation, but the announced agreement did not establish a joint cashierless-store product.

What customers and employees might have noticed

Potential customer effects

Walmart pointed to faster and more reliable online shopping, the ability to respond to demand spikes, quicker launches of digital features and more convenient shopping across channels. These were intended benefits, not published performance results. The announcement did not report a measured improvement in checkout speed, site availability, sales or customer satisfaction attributable to Azure.

Workplace and identity tools

The planned Microsoft 365 rollout was intended to improve communication and collaboration among employees. A separate Microsoft customer story published in October 2018 described Walmart’s use of Azure Active Directory capabilities, including self-service password reset, to help associates regain access without direct IT intervention and reduce help-desk calls. This is a specific later example, not evidence that every employee received the same tools or experience. Microsoft’s account of Walmart’s Azure Active Directory work provides the details.

How the relationship developed after the announcement

December 2018: a planned Austin cloud factory

On December 20, 2018, Microsoft said Walmart and Microsoft planned to open a “cloud factory” in Austin, Texas, with an expected opening in early 2019. The companies described it as a physical collaboration space for engineers working to migrate thousands of internal business applications and develop retail products and services. It was not a consumer-facing Walmart store. The announcement describes the plan and its intended work; it does not independently establish the facility’s long-term results. Microsoft’s cloud factory announcement gives the original description.

January 2024: a generative-AI assistant

Microsoft’s January 9, 2024 account said Walmart’s “My Assistant” tool for non-store associates used Walmart proprietary data, technology and large language models through Azure OpenAI Service. Microsoft characterized it as a later evolution of the relationship. It shows later collaboration, but does not establish that generative AI was part of the 2018 agreement or that its original five-year terms were renewed unchanged. Microsoft’s account of Walmart’s 2024 AI capabilities describes the tool.

What the deal did—and did not—establish

The agreement was a technology partnership, not a merger, a jointly owned retail business or proof that Walmart abandoned all other cloud providers. “Preferred and strategic cloud provider” does not mean “exclusive cloud provider.” Nor did the announcement show that Walmart moved every system to Azure, completed every planned migration or achieved a particular financial return.

The public announcement did not disclose a contract value, a specific Azure spending commitment, an application-by-application inventory, a migration completion rate or audited customer and cost outcomes. Cloud-native systems can offer flexibility, but migration involves integration, security, refactoring and operating costs; consumption-based cloud bills can also rise with usage. Walmart said the work could help manage costs, but published no savings figure in the announcement.

The chronology matters, too. The five-year term was announced in 2018. Later collaboration—including the Austin plan and the 2024 AI example—shows subsequent work, but does not by itself prove that the original agreement continued on identical terms through 2026. The best-supported conclusion is that Microsoft and Walmart pursued a substantial technology relationship spanning cloud, workplace tools and later AI, while the headline’s Amazon framing describes strategic context rather than a single joint attack on Amazon’s full range of businesses.
