Short answer: Microsoft 365 Premium is Microsoft’s highest consumer subscription tier. In the US, it costs $19.99 per month or $199.99 per year as of August 10, 2026. It covers up to six people, with 1 TB of OneDrive storage per person, and includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams, Defender, Designer, Clipchamp, and Copilot.
The important catch is that the AI benefits belong only to the subscription owner. Invited household members receive the apps, storage, and other eligible non-AI benefits, but not the owner’s Copilot entitlement. Compared with Microsoft 365 Family, Premium costs $70 more per year and is worth considering mainly if the owner regularly needs higher AI limits or Premium-only features such as Researcher—not simply because the household needs more storage or Office apps.

Best quick recommendation: Choose Family for shared Office apps and storage, Premium for one heavy Copilot user who also wants the household bundle, Personal for one ordinary Office user, and Office Home 2024 if you want a one-time purchase instead of a recurring subscription.

What is Microsoft 365 Premium?
Microsoft 365 Premium is a consumer and household subscription, not a business license. It is the top tier in Microsoft’s consumer lineup above Microsoft 365 Personal and Microsoft 365 Family.
Premium combines the traditional Microsoft 365 subscription—desktop productivity apps, OneDrive storage, Outlook, Teams, and security tools—with substantially more Copilot access and advanced AI features. Microsoft announced the plan on October 1, 2025, describing it as a combination of Microsoft 365 Family and Copilot Pro benefits with additional AI capabilities. Microsoft also said it would stop selling Copilot Pro as a new standalone purchase, although existing Copilot Pro subscribers could keep their subscriptions or switch to Premium. Microsoft’s launch announcement explains that product transition.
Do not confuse Microsoft 365 Premium with Microsoft 365 Business Premium. Consumer Premium is designed for personal accounts and households. Business Premium is an organizational plan with business administration, identity, device-management, and enterprise-security capabilities. A personal Premium subscription does not provide those business controls or an organization’s Microsoft Graph access.
Microsoft 365 Premium pricing in the US
| Plan | Monthly price | Annual price | People covered | Storage |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Microsoft 365 Personal | $9.99 | $99.99 | 1 | 1 TB |
| Microsoft 365 Family | $12.99 | $129.99 | Up to 6 | Up to 6 TB |
| Microsoft 365 Premium | $19.99 | $199.99 | Up to 6 | Up to 6 TB |
These are Microsoft’s US list prices and may not include applicable taxes. See Microsoft’s current plan comparison before purchasing because prices, promotions, and renewal prices can change.
Annual versus monthly billing
Paying annually is cheaper if you expect to keep Premium for a full year:
- Monthly billing for 12 months: $19.99 × 12 = $239.88.
- Annual billing: $199.99.
- Annual-billing savings: $39.89.
Family has a similar structure: 12 monthly payments total $155.88, compared with $129.99 annually, a $25.89 annual saving. Premium costs $7 more per month than Family when both are paid monthly, or $70 more per year when both are paid annually. The annual-plan difference works out to approximately $5.83 per month.
Subscriptions generally renew automatically at the then-current regular price unless you turn off renewal or cancel. Taxes may be added, and a trial—when Microsoft offers one for your account—converts to a recurring paid subscription unless you cancel before the trial ends. Review the Microsoft Store terms and check recurring billing immediately after starting a trial.

Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and other productivity apps
Premium includes Microsoft’s familiar productivity applications:
- Word
- Excel
- PowerPoint
- Outlook
- OneNote
- Microsoft Teams
- Microsoft Forms
- Microsoft Access on PC
- The Microsoft 365 Copilot app
Microsoft describes the core desktop apps as including Copilot for qualifying users. However, app capabilities differ between Windows PCs, Macs, web browsers, phones, and tablets. Access is PC-only, and mobile and web versions are not identical to the desktop applications.
OneDrive storage and household sharing
Premium supports up to six people: the subscription owner plus up to five invited users. Each person receives 1 TB of OneDrive storage, for up to 6 TB across the household.
This is not one freely pooled 6 TB family drive. Storage is associated with each person’s Microsoft account. Also, inviting someone to use the subscription does not transfer the owner’s AI entitlement to that person.

That makes Premium useful for a household using a mixture of PCs, Macs, phones, and tablets, but it does not turn every app into the full desktop version on every device.
Outlook and Teams
Premium includes an ad-free Outlook email and calendar experience, along with Copilot assistance for drafting and summarizing email for the subscription owner. Teams provides video calling and related Copilot features where supported.
Those AI-enabled Outlook and Teams benefits should not be treated as household-wide benefits. Other invited users may have the apps and eligible non-AI features, but Microsoft limits the subscription’s Copilot benefits to the owner’s account.

Security features
Microsoft includes several security features with Premium, including:
- Microsoft Defender.
- OneDrive ransomware detection and file recovery.
- Outlook attachment scanning.
- Outlook link checking.
- Security monitoring and alerts.
These are useful consumer protections, but Premium is not a substitute for strong, unique passwords, multifactor authentication, software updates, backups, and sensible phishing defenses. Nor should Microsoft Defender in a consumer subscription be treated as an enterprise security stack or as a replacement for Microsoft 365 Business Premium.
Designer and Clipchamp
Premium also includes creative tools:
- Microsoft Designer: AI-assisted design and image creation or editing.
- Clipchamp: video editing tools, templates, stock content, filters, and effects.
Premium provides the highest listed consumer tier for AI image creation and editing. Microsoft’s limits can still vary, so “highest tier” does not necessarily mean an unlimited number of images or a permanent guarantee of unlimited access.
Copilot features and current usage limits
The main reason to pay for Premium rather than Family is Copilot. Microsoft’s current limits page uses terms such as extensive use rather than unlimited use. Limits can vary by feature, entry point, system conditions, and model changes.
| Copilot capability | Personal | Family | Premium |
|---|---|---|---|
| AI agents | No Premium-level allowance listed | No Premium-level allowance listed | 25 tasks per month shared across agents |
| Researcher | Not available | Not available | Available |
| Analyst | Coming soon or not available | Coming soon or not available | Listed as coming soon |
| Photos Agent | Coming soon or not available | Coming soon or not available | Coming soon |
| Deep Research | 15 uses | 15 uses | Transitioning to Researcher |
| Audio Overview in Notebooks | 6 per day | Extensive use | Extensive use |

| Vision | 10 minutes per day | 10 minutes per day | 15 minutes per day |
| Voice | 30 minutes per day | 30 minutes per day | 60 minutes per day |
| Advanced AI features | No | No | Yes |
Microsoft’s current AI credits and limits documentation is the best place to check for changes. “Extensive use” should not be rewritten as “unlimited,” and a feature listed in a Premium overview may still be rolling out or subject to account, region, app, and model restrictions.
Researcher: Premium’s clearest exclusive AI feature
Researcher is the most concrete Premium-exclusive feature currently documented. It can conduct complex, multistep research, search and analyze the web, use permitted content from the subscription owner’s Microsoft account, and produce a structured report with citations. Reports may include organized sections, visuals, charts, and graphs, and Researcher can ask clarifying questions before proceeding.
To try it:
- Open the Microsoft 365 Copilot app.
- Select Researcher under Agents.
- Enter the research question.
- Answer any clarification questions.
- Review the report and inspect its cited sources.
Researcher can save time on a first-pass literature review, product comparison, trip plan, or background report. It is not a guarantee that every statement is correct. Check the underlying sources, particularly for medical, legal, financial, academic, employment, and major purchasing decisions.
Microsoft’s Researcher documentation describes its current capabilities and access path.
Analyst and Photos Agent are not fully available everywhere
Microsoft describes Analyst as an advanced feature for data analysis and visualization, but its current AI-limits table still labels Analyst as coming soon for Premium. Photos Agent is also listed as coming soon. Therefore, do not buy Premium on the assumption that either feature is available immediately on every account.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
If Analyst is missing, the explanation may simply be rollout status. It can also depend on the account, region, app build, or feature availability shown in Microsoft’s latest documentation.
Deep Research is changing to Researcher
Microsoft says Deep Research in the consumer Copilot app is scheduled to begin retiring on August 18, 2026. Premium users are directed toward Researcher as the continuing experience for detailed reports and analysis. Personal and Family users can retain access to previous Deep Research reports through chat history.
Because August 10, 2026 falls during the transition period, it is more accurate to say Deep Research is being retired—not that it has already disappeared from every account. Microsoft’s Deep Research transition page may change as the rollout proceeds.
Premium versus Family: what does the extra $70 buy?
For most households, this is the most useful comparison. Premium and Family both cover up to six people and provide up to 6 TB of OneDrive storage in 1 TB allocations. They also provide the core Microsoft 365 apps.
| Difference | Family | Premium |
|---|---|---|
| Annual price | $129.99 | $199.99 |
| Annual difference | Premium costs $70 more | |
| People | Up to 6 | Up to 6 |
| OneDrive storage | 1 TB per person, up to 6 TB | 1 TB per person, up to 6 TB |
| AI access | Owner only, with lower listed limits | Owner only, with the highest listed consumer limits |
| Premium-exclusive advanced AI | No | Yes, with some features still rolling out |
In practical terms, the extra $70 is an AI upgrade for one account. It does not buy additional household seats, extra storage beyond Family’s maximum, or more desktop Office applications.

Premium is more defensible when the owner frequently uses Researcher, voice, vision, audio summaries, AI image generation, or agent tasks. Family is usually the better financial choice when several people need Office and OneDrive but the owner uses Copilot occasionally or not at all.
Can Microsoft 365 Premium be shared?
Yes for the subscription bundle; no for the owner’s AI benefits.
Benefits that can be shared
- Microsoft 365 apps.
- Each invited person’s 1 TB OneDrive allocation.
- Eligible non-AI subscription benefits.
- Access for up to five additional people.
Benefits that cannot be shared
- Copilot in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and OneNote.
- Premium AI usage limits.
- Premium-exclusive agents.
- The owner’s AI credits and advanced AI entitlement.
For example, a spouse can accept a Premium invitation, install Word and Excel, and use their own 1 TB of OneDrive storage. They should not expect Copilot to appear simply because the owner has Premium. This owner-only rule also applies to Family’s Copilot benefits.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Premium versus Personal
Premium costs $10 more per month or $100 more per year than Personal. That higher price also expands the household allowance from one person with 1 TB to up to six people with up to 6 TB total.
For a single user, however, the extra storage capacity may have no value. A solo user should choose Premium over Personal only if the higher Copilot limits and advanced AI features justify the full $199.99 annual price. If the user needs only desktop Office, 1 TB of storage, and occasional Copilot assistance, Personal is generally the more economical subscription.
Is Microsoft 365 Premium worth it?
Premium is a good fit when:
- One person in the household uses Copilot heavily.
- The owner needs Researcher or wants the highest currently listed consumer AI limits.
- The household already wants up to six Microsoft 365 users and 1 TB of OneDrive storage per person.
- The owner frequently creates or edits AI-generated images.
- Voice, vision, audio summaries, or AI agents are important to the workflow.
- The buyer wants Word, Excel, PowerPoint, cloud storage, security tools, and AI in one subscription.
Family is the better value when:
- The household mainly needs Office apps and cloud storage.
- Multiple people need Microsoft 365, but only ordinary Office work matters.
- The owner uses Copilot only occasionally.
- You do not want to pay for AI features that other household members cannot use.
Personal is the better value when:
- Only one person needs the subscription.
- You need desktop Office and 1 TB of storage but not Premium-only agents.
- You already have another solution for household members’ storage and apps.
A simple marginal-value test
Start with Family if your household needs six-person sharing. Ask whether the owner alone would willingly pay about $5.83 extra per month on an annual plan for higher AI limits and advanced features. If the answer is no, Family provides essentially the same household and storage structure for less.
If you will use all six non-AI seats, Premium’s annual cost averages about $33.33 per covered person per year, compared with about $21.67 per person for Family. But this calculation does not mean six people receive Premium AI; the AI entitlement remains with the owner.

Office Home 2024 is the better fit for someone who wants a one-time purchase for one PC or Mac and does not need the ongoing subscription benefits.
| Choose Premium if you want… | Choose Office Home 2024 if you want… |
|---|---|
| Up to six people covered | One-time ownership for one computer |
| Up to 6 TB of OneDrive storage | No recurring subscription |
| Copilot and evolving AI features | No need for ongoing Copilot access |
| Access across multiple supported devices | A single PC or Mac installation |
| Continuing feature updates under the subscription | A fixed Office release rather than a subscription model |
Office Home 2024 does not provide the same subscription benefits, cloud-storage allowance, multi-person sharing, or Copilot model as Premium. It may cost less over a long period for a single-device user who is comfortable giving up those features. Microsoft’s comparison page lists the current differences.
When free tools or another plan make more sense
- Free web apps: If you open documents only occasionally and can work in browser-based Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, a paid plan may be unnecessary.
- Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides: These may be sufficient if your household already works primarily in Google’s ecosystem.
- Free local office suites: These can work for basic offline documents, although formatting and collaboration may not match Microsoft Office.
- Free Copilot: If you mainly want occasional AI chat rather than desktop Office integration, advanced consumer limits, or OneDrive storage, a paid Microsoft 365 plan may not be necessary.
- School access: College students should check their university’s IT portal before paying. Some schools provide Microsoft 365, but eligibility varies and should not be assumed.
- Business licensing: Freelancers and companies that need centralized administration, employee accounts, device management, organizational security, or broad work-data access should investigate a business plan rather than treating Premium as a substitute.
Can Premium be used for work?
Sometimes, but it is not the same as an employer-provided Microsoft 365 Copilot license.
A Premium owner may be able to use the personal Copilot entitlement with work or school files in supported Microsoft 365 apps when multiple-account access is available. The work account still controls file permissions and organizational policy, and an administrator can disable this use.
Recommended Free Tools
The personal subscription does not grant access to the organization’s Microsoft Graph. In practical terms, Premium Copilot may help with the currently open work document, but it does not automatically let you ask broad questions across other organizational documents. That broader, organization-grounded capability requires the relevant work licensing and permissions from the employer or school.
See Microsoft’s guidance on using a personal Microsoft 365 subscription at work before relying on it for professional data.
Privacy and Copilot grounding boundaries
For individual Premium use, Copilot can be grounded in the subscription owner’s permitted content, including eligible OneDrive files, Outlook information, Copilot Pages, Notebooks, Designer, Create, and agent experiences.

That does not make Premium a household-wide AI that can freely search every family member’s private files. Shared storage and shared folders may allow access to particular files, but they do not make every account’s AI entitlement or private content available to the owner.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Keep these boundaries in mind:
- Personal-account grounding: Copilot works with the owner’s permitted personal content.
- Shared storage: A file’s sharing permissions determine whether another person can access it; household membership alone does not.
- Work-account grounding: Work permissions and organizational policies control what can be used.
- AI accuracy: Citations and grounding make results easier to check, but they do not guarantee that every output is accurate or complete.
Microsoft explains these boundaries in its documentation on grounding for individual and family accounts.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Compatibility and prerequisites
Premium works across supported PCs, Macs, phones, and tablets, but feature availability and app functionality vary by platform. Some AI capabilities require the latest Microsoft 365 app build, and individual features may be limited by country, language, age, device, or account type.
Microsoft says Copilot is available in more than 170 markets, but some markets and individual features are excluded or delayed. Check the supported regions and languages page if a feature is missing.
Excel has an important cloud-file requirement
For Copilot in Excel, AutoSave must be enabled and the workbook must be saved to OneDrive. Copilot does not work with an unsaved workbook. If Copilot is missing from Excel, check the app version, the signed-in account, AutoSave, the OneDrive location, and applicable age and regional requirements. Microsoft lists these requirements in its Copilot subscription FAQ.
Mac and iPhone requirements
Microsoft’s July 13, 2026 support change requires macOS 12 or later and iOS or iPadOS 17 or later for affected Office versions’ continued editing functionality. Older hardware or operating systems may therefore limit what you can do even when the subscription itself is active. Review Microsoft’s Mac and iOS requirements before buying for an older device.
Upgrading, canceling, and refunds
Switching from Family to Premium
Microsoft says to purchase the higher-feature subscription using the same Microsoft account. You generally do not need to reinstall Office; the account’s subscription entitlement changes. Remaining time is automatically converted, but not necessarily day for day.
Microsoft’s current conversion table lists these examples:
| Existing subscription | Remaining time converted to Premium |
|---|---|
| Personal | 60% |
| Family | 78% |
| Copilot Pro | 100% |
| Basic | 12% |
These are Microsoft’s current conversion rules, not a universal refund or dollar-for-dollar credit formula. See Microsoft’s subscription-switching guidance before confirming an upgrade.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCanceling Premium
To cancel a subscription purchased directly from Microsoft:
- Sign in to the Microsoft account used for the purchase.
- Open Services & subscriptions.
- Select the Microsoft 365 Premium subscription.
- Choose Manage.
- Select Cancel.
If Microsoft does not issue a refund, access typically continues through the end of the current billing period. Purchases made through Apple or Google generally must be managed through the corresponding app store. Refund eligibility depends on the purchase and region; consult Microsoft’s refund policy.
Canceling also matters for storage. Before the subscription ends, download or move files if your account will exceed the free storage allowance after cancellation.
Common problems and what they mean
“I shared Premium, but my spouse cannot use Copilot.”
This is expected. Sharing provides eligible apps, storage, and non-AI benefits. The Premium AI entitlement remains with the subscription owner.
“I bought Premium but Analyst is missing.”
Microsoft’s current limits page still labels Analyst as coming soon. Availability may also depend on rollout status, app version, account, or region. Premium does not guarantee that every advertised advanced feature is live on every account on the purchase date.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does everyone on Microsoft 365 Family or Premium get Copilot?
No. Microsoft’s Copilot benefits for these consumer subscriptions belong to the subscription owner. Invited Family or Premium users can receive the Microsoft 365 apps, their own OneDrive storage, and other eligible non-AI benefits, but not the owner’s Copilot access, AI credits, or Premium agents. See Microsoft’s subscription FAQ.
Is Analyst available with Microsoft 365 Premium now?
Microsoft describes Analyst as an advanced Premium feature, but its current AI-limits documentation still labels Analyst as coming soon. Availability may depend on rollout, account, region, and app version, so do not treat it as guaranteed immediate access.
Is Researcher the same as Deep Research?
They are related but not identical labels. Microsoft is transitioning Premium users from Deep Research to Researcher and says consumer Deep Research retirement is scheduled to begin August 18, 2026. Previous Personal and Family reports can remain available through chat history. Researcher is the Premium experience Microsoft currently documents for detailed, source-cited reports.
Can Microsoft 365 Premium replace Microsoft 365 Business Premium?
No. Premium is a consumer household subscription. Business Premium is an organizational product with administration, identity, device-management, and enterprise-security capabilities. Consumer Premium does not grant business controls or broad Microsoft Graph access.
Can I use Premium Copilot with work files?
Sometimes. With multiple-account access in supported apps, the personal Copilot entitlement may help with work or school files, including the currently open document. The employer’s permissions and policies still control the files, an administrator can disable the use, and a personal subscription does not provide broad access to the organization’s Microsoft Graph.
How much OneDrive storage does each Premium user receive?
Each covered person receives 1 TB of OneDrive storage, up to six people and 6 TB total. The storage is allocated to individual accounts rather than pooled into one unrestricted family drive.
Is annual Microsoft 365 Premium billing cheaper?
Yes, based on Microsoft’s US list prices as of August 10, 2026. Twelve $19.99 monthly payments total $239.88, while annual billing costs $199.99, a savings of $39.89 before applicable taxes.
What happens when I cancel Microsoft 365 Premium?
If Microsoft does not issue a refund, access generally continues until the end of the current billing period. Purchases made through Apple or Google usually must be canceled through those stores. Review your OneDrive usage before the subscription ends so you do not exceed the storage available afterward.
Recommended Free Tools
Can I switch from Family to Premium without reinstalling Office?
Microsoft says to upgrade using the same Microsoft account. The subscription entitlement changes, so a reinstall is generally not necessary. Remaining Family time is converted under Microsoft’s current rules; the listed Family-to-Premium conversion is 78% of remaining time, not necessarily day for day.
What happens to my remaining subscription time when I upgrade?
Microsoft automatically converts remaining time when you switch using the same account, but the conversion depends on the previous plan. Its current table lists 60% for Personal to Premium, 78% for Family to Premium, 100% for Copilot Pro to Premium, and 12% for Basic to Premium.
The Bottom Line
Microsoft 365 Premium is best understood as Microsoft 365 Family plus a substantially stronger AI entitlement for one person. At $199.99 per year, it is not a better deal than Family merely because it covers more people—it covers the same maximum of six people and the same maximum of 6 TB. The $70 annual upgrade makes sense when the owner will regularly use Researcher, higher Copilot limits, AI image tools, voice, vision, audio, or agents.
