Not as a single, two-date schedule. As of August 18, 2026, Micron expects qualified production from its modernized Manassas, Virginia, facility by the end of 2026. Its new Idaho fabs have later first-wafer targets—mid-2027 and late 2028—while current project documentation points to 2030 for operations at the first New York fab. The familiar 2026 and 2029 dates mix different sites, project stages and older estimates.
Micron’s current U.S. production timeline
The dates below refer to different milestones, so “operating” should not be read as a common opening date for all of Micron’s U.S. projects.
| Site | Facility and status | Current timing | Milestone |
|---|---|---|---|
| Manassas, Virginia | Existing fab being expanded and modernized | Qualified 1α DRAM production targeted by the end of calendar 2026 | Production from an upgraded existing facility, not a newly built leading-edge fab. Micron’s May 22, 2026 update says initial production began in 2026. |
| Boise, Idaho — Fab 1 | New leading-edge fab under construction | First wafer output expected in mid-calendar 2027 | Initial wafer output, not full-capacity production. Micron’s July 9, 2026 schedule gives this target. |
| Boise, Idaho — Fab 2 | Second leading-edge fab; construction and ground preparation advancing | First wafer output expected in late calendar 2028 | The July 2026 release specifies first wafer output. An earlier filing described the fab as expected to be operational by the end of 2028. Micron’s filing uses that earlier wording. |
| Clay, New York — Fab 1 | First fab in a planned megafab campus | 2030 operational projection in a current environmental analysis; earlier estimates cited 2029 | Project documents do not make 2029 the uncontested latest date. See Micron’s environmental analysis. |
| Clay, New York — Fabs 2–4 | Potential later phases of the campus | Planned over decades; no specific production dates stated | Micron describes up to four fabs, but timing for later phases remains conditional. |
Micron’s Idaho project overview and New York project page describe the broader projects. For New York Fab 1, the safest summary is that earlier schedules pointed to 2029, while current project documentation points to 2030; Micron’s July 2026 release did not give a new explicit New York production date.
Why the 2026 date still appears
Micron previously projected Idaho DRAM output beginning in 2026. Its earlier announcement said the Idaho fab was expected to become operational in calendar 2025, with DRAM output starting in 2026. That schedule has since been superseded by the company’s mid-2027 first-wafer target for Idaho Fab 1. The earlier projection is in Micron’s announcement; the later date is in its July 2026 update.

But 2026 is not wholly wrong as a Micron production milestone: the company says initial 1α DDR4 production began at Manassas, with qualified production targeted by year-end. That is output from an existing facility being upgraded, not the opening of Idaho’s first new leading-edge fab. The date can also refer to construction activity, which is not production.
Idaho’s new fabs have separate milestones
Fab 1: first wafers targeted for mid-2027
Micron’s latest stated target for Boise Fab 1 is first wafer output in mid-calendar 2027. This is later than the older 2026 DRAM-output projection. The company’s Idaho plans place the new fabs alongside its Boise research and development operations; Micron says that co-location is intended to improve integration and time to market for products including high-bandwidth memory.
Fab 2: first wafers targeted for late 2028
Micron expects Idaho Fab 2 to reach first wafer output in late calendar 2028. An earlier company filing called the target “operational by the end of 2028.” These phrases are related but not interchangeable: the July 2026 release gives the more specific first-wafer milestone, while the filing uses a broader description.

Neither first-wafer target says that a fab will immediately produce at full capacity or that all output will be qualified and shipping at scale. The July 2026 announcement is the latest schedule cited here.

Why New York is associated with 2029 and 2030
The 2029 date comes from earlier plans for the first phase of Micron’s Clay, New York, project. Government and project environmental materials have used differing projections; some documents described the first two fabs as becoming operational in 2029 and 2030, respectively. A later Micron environmental analysis projects the first fab’s operation in 2030. The NIST final environmental impact statement is another source for the project timeline.
The project has advanced through construction milestones, but those milestones do not establish a production date. Micron broke ground in January 2026, selected Bechtel as the engineering, procurement and construction partner for the first fab in June, and announced the first concrete at the site in July. The announcements are the January groundbreaking release, the Bechtel appointment and the July concrete milestone.

Micron’s plan calls for up to four leading-edge DRAM fabs at Clay, built in phases over decades. The company’s current documentation does not establish production dates for all four.
What “operating” means in semiconductor manufacturing
A fab passes through stages before it can produce at scale. The labels matter when comparing company targets or deciding whether a date signals a meaningful change in chip supply.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Site preparation and utilities: Ground is prepared and the services required for construction and manufacturing are developed.
- Structural construction: The fab’s buildings take shape. A groundbreaking or first-concrete announcement marks construction progress, not chip output.
- Clean-room fit-out and equipment installation: The controlled manufacturing space is completed and specialized tools are brought in and set up.
- Process qualification and first wafer output: Wafers begin moving through manufacturing processes. This is an early production milestone, not proof of full qualification or commercial volume.
- Qualified production: Processes meet the required standards for the products being made. Micron uses this phrase for its Virginia target.
- Volume production and ramp-up: Output, yields and production capacity increase over time. First output does not mean the fab has reached its planned capacity.
That distinction explains why Micron’s Idaho releases use “first wafer output,” while its Virginia update refers to “qualified 1α DRAM production.” Neither phrase should be silently converted into a claim that a facility is fully operational at scale.

What Micron is building and why it matters
Micron’s U.S. program combines two planned leading-edge fabs in Boise, up to four planned fabs at Clay, modernization and expansion at Manassas, and U.S. research and development and advanced-packaging capabilities intended to support high-bandwidth memory. In its July 9, 2026 announcement, Micron raised its planned U.S. investment to more than $250 billion through 2035. That figure is dated and tied to the broader U.S. plan; older materials cite different amounts for earlier versions or narrower scopes.
The strategy is to expand domestic DRAM manufacturing, reduce reliance on overseas production and serve demand from AI data centers and other data-intensive uses, as well as automotive, industrial, medical, aerospace and defense customers. Co-locating the Idaho fabs with Boise R&D is intended to connect product development and manufacturing more closely.
Federal support is part of the funding picture, not a guarantee of a specific production date. In December 2024, the U.S. Department of Commerce awarded Micron up to $6.165 billion in direct CHIPS Act funding for planned projects in Idaho and New York. The award covers a broader manufacturing plan, not one fab with one opening date. See the Commerce Department announcement.

Why future production dates can change
Micron identifies its future project milestones as forward-looking statements. The schedule can move as construction and manufacturing plans develop. Factors include:
- construction progress and the availability of skilled labor;
- equipment delivery, installation and commissioning;
- utilities, permitting and environmental requirements;
- supply-chain constraints and process yields;
- demand and market conditions for DRAM and high-bandwidth memory; and
- Micron’s capital-spending priorities.
A target for first wafer output is therefore a schedule estimate, not a promise of commercial shipments, full capacity or a particular effect on memory prices. Micron’s July 2026 release discusses the project schedule and forward-looking risks.
