Micron fell 3.9% in Monday U.S. trading; SoftBank fell 8.5% in Tuesday Tokyo trading. South Korean chipmakers also dropped sharply as investors weighed a reported advance by Chinese memory maker CXMT alongside wider doubts about AI spending, competition, financing costs and future margins.
What fell, and when?
The headline moves span two trading days and several markets, rather than one simultaneous Wall Street selloff. The Associated Press reported these figures:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
| Market or company | Reported move | Session |
|---|---|---|
| Micron Technology | Down 3.9% | U.S. trading, Monday, October 12 |
| SoftBank Group | Down 8.5% | Tokyo trading, Tuesday, October 13 |
| South Korea’s Kospi | Down 5.5% to 6,035.35, after falling more than 7% intraday | Tuesday, October 13 |
| Samsung Electronics | Down 7.4% | Tuesday, October 13 |
| SK Hynix | Down 10.1% | Tuesday, October 13 |
Those figures provide regional context, not a direct measure of how any single U.S. stock performed. In Monday’s U.S. session, the S&P 500 slipped 0.1%, the Nasdaq Composite fell 0.4%, and the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.4%, according to AP. That mixed performance does not support describing the move as a broad market crash.

Why memory stocks came under pressure
CXMT raised a competition concern
Reports that Chinese chipmaker CXMT had made progress on a DRAM architecture intended to increase memory density were a near-term catalyst for concern. Investors worried that the development could eventually challenge established suppliers including Micron, Samsung and SK Hynix. That is a concern about competitive potential—not evidence that CXMT has reached commercial-scale yields, qualified products with customers, shipped at volumes that displace rivals, or taken market share.
AP and The Guardian both connected the reports about CXMT with pressure on memory shares. The Guardian also reported comments by Broadcom CEO Hock Tan at a Singapore conference warning that some investors had “no clue” what they were investing in and setting expectations so extreme that investing could resemble a casino. His remarks reflected concern about speculative enthusiasm; they do not establish that AI demand has stopped growing.

Investors were questioning the durability of the AI trade
The CXMT news landed amid broader scrutiny of how quickly AI demand can grow and how long exceptional profits and margins can last. Reuters quoted Charu Chanana, chief investment strategist at Saxo, calling the CXMT news a clear trigger for memory-stock selling while describing a larger shift toward less tolerance for uncertainty around the AI trade.
Other concerns included the cost of financing the AI infrastructure buildout and the effect of higher rates on debt-funded deals. Those factors can weigh on expectations for companies exposed to AI investment even when the companies sell different products or operate in different parts of the technology supply chain.

Why the three stocks are not the same trade
Micron, ASML and SoftBank can all be affected by changing expectations for AI, but their businesses—and the risks investors assess—differ.

| Company | Business exposure | What the current concern relates to |
|---|---|---|
| Micron Technology | Memory-chip producer | Competition in memory, including concern about CXMT’s reported DRAM progress, as well as expectations for AI-related demand and margins. |
| ASML | Semiconductor equipment maker | Investors look to orders and company guidance for information about demand across chip manufacturing. Its scheduled quarterly results were a near-term event for the sector. |
| SoftBank Group | Investment company with AI exposure; AP identifies it as an OpenAI investor | Its share price can reflect views about AI-related investments and financing, rather than direct exposure to memory-chip manufacturing. |
The available reporting does not establish that all three shares fell for identical company-specific reasons. Nor does it provide comparable valuation figures or a fully sourced breakdown of SoftBank’s portfolio exposure. Treating their moves as interchangeable would obscure the different businesses behind them.

What remains uncertain
- The reported sources do not establish CXMT’s production yields, commercial timeline, customer uptake or ability to displace incumbent suppliers.
- They do not settle whether AI infrastructure spending will produce durable returns or whether current demand and margins can be sustained.
- The reported market moves describe particular sessions; they do not by themselves establish a longer-term direction for the companies’ shares.
