A reliable current net-worth figure for Michael and Xochi Birch has not been established by the available reporting. The most widely cited number is historical: in 2008, Forbes.com contributor Andrew Farrell estimated that the couple received about $600 million from the sale of Bebo. That was an estimate of sale proceeds, not a calculation of their wealth today.

What is Michael and Xochi Birch’s net worth?

No reviewed source establishes Michael and Xochi Birch’s current combined net worth or separate individual fortunes. Their 2008 Bebo sale is the clearest public financial milestone, but proceeds from that deal cannot be treated as a current balance sheet: net worth depends on assets, liabilities, ownership stakes, taxes, spending, and investment performance over time.

What did the Birches make from selling Bebo?

AOL acquired Bebo in 2008 for a reported $850 million. The San Francisco Chronicle described the transaction as an all-cash deal. That figure was the reported purchase price for the company, not the amount paid directly to the founders. San Francisco Chronicle, March 14, 2008.

Andrew Farrell, writing for Forbes.com in a report republished by ABC News, estimated that Michael and Xochi Birch’s cut was about $600 million. The estimate was published in September 2008 and refers to the couple together; it does not establish their present-day net worth or how proceeds were divided between them. ABC News, September 5, 2008.

Other reporting from the time was less specific. The Guardian said the founders were expected to receive several hundred million dollars, while The Independent reported that their stake and resulting wealth were undisclosed. Those accounts provide context for the Forbes contributor’s estimate, but do not establish an audited payout. The Guardian, March 13, 2008; The Independent, March 14, 2008.

Do later business and property reports reveal their wealth?

The Battery

The Birches later founded The Battery, a private social club in San Francisco. A 2013 San Francisco Chronicle report covered the club’s opening and vision, but did not disclose a current valuation, profitability, or the couple’s ownership share. It therefore cannot be used to calculate their present net worth. San Francisco Chronicle, October 4, 2013, updated February 14, 2014.

San Francisco home sale

The San Francisco Chronicle reported that the Birches’ home at 2799 Broadway sold for $29,150,000 in 2024. A property’s sale price is not the seller’s net proceeds: it does not specify mortgage debt, transaction costs, taxes, or how ownership was held. San Francisco Chronicle, August 19, 2024.

Why the $600 million estimate is not a current net-worth figure

  • Different measures: The $850 million figure is the reported Bebo acquisition price; about $600 million is a contemporaneous estimate of the couple’s share of the sale.
  • Different dates: Both numbers relate to the 2008 transaction, not the couple’s finances in 2026.
  • Incomplete information: The cited reporting does not establish their current assets, debts, investment returns, taxes, or precise ownership interests in later ventures.

Accordingly, the defensible answer is that their current net worth is unknown based on the cited public reporting. The historical Bebo estimate is useful context, but it should not be presented as a verified present-day fortune.
