Mexico ranked as the largest market for U.S. agricultural exports in calendar year 2024, with exports valued at $30.32 billion. Canada ranked second at $28.38 billion and China third at $24.65 billion. The shift is specific to the 2024 calendar-year ranking: USDA’s 2023 calendar-year and fiscal-year comparisons placed China ahead of Mexico.
How the 2024 ranking changed
The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Foreign Agricultural Service (USDA FAS) reported that U.S. agricultural exports totaled $176.0 billion in calendar year 2024, 1% more than in 2023. Exports to Mexico reached a record $30.3 billion, up 7% from 2023. In the same calendar-year ranking, Mexico led Canada and China.

USDA FAS’s country page gives Mexico’s total as $30.32 billion, while its February 2025 trade spotlight rounds it to $30.3 billion. The figures describe the same calendar-year result. USDA’s 2024 export summary reports the overall U.S. total and growth; the Mexico country trade page and USDA trade data page provide destination and commodity figures.
Why the year labels matter
“Mexico displaced China” is accurate for the comparison between USDA’s 2023 rankings and its 2024 calendar-year ranking, but the reporting periods should not be blurred. USDA’s fiscal-year 2023 spotlight reported $33.7 billion in exports to China and $28.2 billion to Mexico. Its 2023 calendar-year yearbook also ranked China ahead of Mexico, reporting nearly $29 billion in exports to Mexico.

Fiscal years and calendar years cover different periods, so the fiscal-year 2023 dollar figures should not be compared directly with calendar-year 2024 figures as if they were a continuous like-for-like series. The appropriate conclusion is that Mexico was second to China in the cited 2023 comparisons and first in USDA’s 2024 calendar-year ranking. See the USDA FAS December 2023 trade spotlight and the 2023 U.S. Agricultural Export Yearbook for the earlier rankings.
What the United States sells to Mexico
The 2024 leading export categories show that the trade relationship spans feed grains, animal products, and oilseeds. USDA FAS’s Mexico trade page lists these top commodities by export value:
Rank #2
| Commodity | 2024 U.S. export value to Mexico |
|---|---|
| Corn | $5.62 billion |
| Pork and pork products | $2.58 billion |
| Dairy products | $2.47 billion |
| Soybeans | $2.30 billion |
| Poultry meat and products | $1.47 billion |
These are commodity values, not shipment volumes or Mexico’s total imports in each category. The ranking therefore describes the value of U.S. agricultural exports by destination, rather than the amount of food physically shipped.

Mexico’s first-place ranking reflects the value of U.S. agricultural goods sold there relative to sales to other individual countries. It does not mean that Mexico accounts for most U.S. agricultural exports: the country’s $30.32 billion was part of the $176.0 billion U.S. total in calendar year 2024.

USDA FAS’s 2023 yearbook reported that U.S. products held a 74% share of Mexico’s agricultural import market in 2023. That figure is a market-share measure for Mexico’s imports in 2023, not the U.S. share of its own agricultural exports and not a 2024 market-share figure. The USDA’s 2024 U.S. Agricultural Export Yearbook, published May 28, 2025, provides the official statistical summary for that calendar year.
