Metaverse Coins in Australia: A Guide to MANA, SAND and AXS

MANA, SAND and AXS are linked to different virtual-world and gaming ecosystems. Compare their uses, current access and risks before buying in Australia.

Metaverse coins are crypto-assets linked to virtual worlds or blockchain games. MANA is associated with Decentraland, SAND with The Sandbox, and AXS with Axie Infinity. MANA and SAND have uses inside their platforms, but a token’s connection to a virtual world does not make it a safe investment—or guarantee that its price will rise. There is no evidence here to name one “best” coin to buy in Australia; compare each token’s actual utility, risks and current trading access before deciding whether to buy.

What are metaverse coins?

Metaverse coins are crypto-assets associated with virtual-world or blockchain-game ecosystems. Depending on the platform, a token may be used to buy digital items, access features, receive rewards or participate in governance. Those uses are specific to each ecosystem; holding a token does not automatically mean you own virtual land, control a platform or have a right to a share of its revenue.

Forbes Advisor Australia identifies MANA and SAND as popular metaverse-related cryptocurrencies. CoinSpot describes MANA as the token used for Decentraland in-game transactions and SAND as a token used in The Sandbox for purchases such as land and skins. AXS is associated with Axie Infinity, but the sources cited here do not establish a current, detailed account of its functions. Check the relevant platform’s official information for the token’s present uses and rules.

How MANA, SAND and AXS compare

The table separates the basic platform association from information a buyer would need to assess today. The available Forbes Advisor Australia and CoinSpot guides do not provide a current, like-for-like dataset for adoption, token economics, liquidity or custody risks. Those details should be checked against current platform documentation and the Australian service you plan to use.

Is there a best metaverse coin to buy in Australia?

No single token can be called the best choice without a dated method and current market information. Prices, trading access and platform activity can change, and the sources cited here do not provide current price, market-cap or return figures for a meaningful ranking. A token’s popularity or connection to a well-known virtual world is not evidence that it is undervalued or likely to perform well.

Instead, compare the three tokens using the same questions. If you cannot verify an answer from reliable, current information, treat that as uncertainty—not as a reason to assume the most favourable outcome.

1. Platform purpose and actual utility

Find out what the token lets a holder do now, rather than relying on broad claims about the metaverse. Confirm whether the use is optional or necessary, whether a purchase is made in the token, and whether the platform can change its rules. A token used for in-world transactions may have practical utility, but utility alone does not establish demand or support a particular market price.

2. Adoption and activity

Look for evidence of ongoing users, active games or applications, events, developer work and community participation. Distinguish sustained activity from a one-off announcement, a marketing campaign or a period of speculative attention. Historical market figures are not a substitute for current platform data: Forbes Advisor Australia’s 2023 guide cited a CoinMarketCap figure of US$1.8 billion for the NFT market at that time. That is dated NFT-market context, not a current market size or a valuation of MANA, SAND or AXS.

3. Token economics

Read the current documentation for supply, issuance or emissions, vesting and unlock schedules, staking arrangements and governance. These features can affect the number of tokens available, who can influence decisions and what incentives participants have. Do not assume the design is the same across MANA, SAND and AXS, or that a token’s stated maximum supply tells the whole story.

4. Liquidity and Australian access

Check whether a provider serving Australian customers currently lists the exact token and supports the deposit or withdrawal route you need. Compare the quoted spread as well as any explicit trading and withdrawal fees: the displayed price may not be the price at which your order executes. Listings, fees, account rules and Australian availability change, so verify them directly with the provider before depositing money.

5. Security and custody

Confirm that the wallet supports the exact token and network you intend to use. Consider risks from the platform’s smart contracts, any bridges involved in moving assets between networks, and how you will secure your private keys. A mistaken network or address can make a transfer inaccessible, and a wallet being compatible does not establish that a token or project is trustworthy.

6. Speculation and downside

Ask whether your decision depends mainly on a platform’s current use or on expectations that interest and prices will rise. Forbes Australia has described virtual-land activity as a highly risky investment opportunity and warned that hype can be dangerous for average investors. A strong story, virtual-world branding or a past price increase does not remove the possibility of a steep loss.

How to buy MANA, SAND or AXS in Australia

In general, buying involves using a crypto trading platform, funding an account, placing an order for the token and deciding whether to leave it on the platform or transfer it to a compatible wallet. The exact process, available tokens, fees and controls differ by provider.

  1. Check the provider and token. Confirm that the service is available to you in Australia and lists the exact asset you intend to buy. Check whether the provider is licensed or otherwise properly regulated for the service it offers; verify the relevant status rather than relying on an advertisement or search result.
  2. Review costs and withdrawal terms. Read the provider’s current fee schedule, order information and withdrawal rules. Confirm whether it permits withdrawals of the token, which network it uses and whether your intended wallet supports that network.
  3. Secure your account and deposit funds. Use a unique password and available multifactor authentication. Follow the provider’s own instructions for depositing funds, and do not send crypto to an address supplied by an unsolicited message or an unverified website.
  4. Place an order only after checking the details. Verify the token name, ticker and order amount before confirming. Review the quoted execution price and any fees; an order’s final result can differ from what you expected if the price moves or the market has limited liquidity.
  5. Choose where to hold the token. You may leave the asset with the provider or transfer it to a wallet you control. Before transferring, verify the destination address and network, and consider a small test transfer if appropriate. A wrong address or incompatible network may prevent recovery.

How to store metaverse crypto safely

MoneySmart explains that crypto can be held in software, or “hot,” wallets and hardware, or “cold,” wallets. Each wallet has a private key that controls access to the assets. A hardware wallet stores keys on a device that is not connected to the internet; it can reduce some online exposure, but it does not protect against every mistake, device loss or scam.

  • Keep private keys and recovery phrases secret. No legitimate support agent needs you to disclose them.
  • Store recovery information securely and separately from the device. Losing the private key or recovery phrase can mean losing access to the crypto.
  • Check wallet compatibility for the exact token and network before receiving or sending funds.
  • Use strong account security and carefully verify wallet addresses and transaction details before confirming.
  • Be wary of unexpected tokens appearing in a wallet. MoneySmart warns that mystery wallet tokens can be malicious; do not interact with them or follow instructions attached to them unless you have independently verified the source.

Risks and scams to understand before buying

MoneySmart says, “Most crypto are high-risk investments,” and warns that “The value of crypto is very volatile, often fluctuating by huge amounts within a short period.” It advises investors to be prepared to lose everything invested. Crypto is not legal tender in Australia and is not widely accepted for everyday payment.

MoneySmart’s scam guidance reports that during the 2025–26 financial year ASIC took down more than 19,400 online scams, up 182% on the previous year; more than 3,000 of those were cryptocurrency investment scams. These figures are attributed to MoneySmart/ASIC for FY2025/26. The same guidance warns that crypto transfers can be difficult to recover, fake exchanges and wallets exist, and guaranteed returns are a red flag. MoneySmart also notes that losses involving unlicensed or unregulated investments can be harder to recover.

  • Verify the token’s exact contract address using the project’s official channels and check that the exchange or marketplace is genuine. A familiar token name or ticker alone is not enough.
  • Do not trust unsolicited investment offers, pressure to act quickly or promises of guaranteed returns.
  • Never share a private key or recovery phrase, and do not connect a wallet or sign a transaction just because a stranger says it is needed to claim a reward.
  • Check that a provider is properly authorised or regulated for the service it offers before sending money or crypto.
  • Remember that a completed crypto transfer may be difficult or impossible to reverse, even if you later discover a scam.

What platform roadmaps can—and cannot—tell you

Platform ambitions can help explain a project’s direction, but a promise is not proof of delivery or a guarantee of token value. In a 2022 Forbes report, The Sandbox co-founder and COO Sebastien Borget said: “The goal and aim of The Sandbox is that within three to five years, it will be fully decentralized, meaning players will own 100 percent of the land on the map …” That statement describes an ambition made in 2022; it should not be treated as evidence of the platform’s current status. Check what has actually been implemented and how ownership, governance and token functions work today.
