What began as a June 10, 2025 report became a confirmed combination of an executive move, a roughly $14.3 billion investment in Scale AI, and a broader reorganization around Meta Superintelligence Labs. Meta received a non-voting minority stake rather than acquiring Scale outright.
From report to confirmed deal
The story developed in stages:
- June 10, 2025: TechCrunch reported, based largely on reporting by The New York Times and Bloomberg, that Meta was recruiting Wang for a new lab focused on “superintelligence” and was discussing a multibillion-dollar investment in Scale AI. The reports also described Mark Zuckerberg as personally involved in recruiting researchers and engineers.
- June 12, 2025: Scale AI confirmed that Wang was leaving his CEO position to join Meta and that Meta had made a significant investment in the company. Scale said it would remain independent.
- June 13, 2025: follow-up reporting put the investment at approximately $14.3 billion and Scale’s implied valuation at about $29 billion.
- July 30, 2025: Meta publicly described Meta Superintelligence Labs as a broader organization spanning foundational AI, product and applied AI, FAIR research, and a new group developing next-generation models.
The initial headline therefore understated the final arrangement. This was not only a reported hire; it became a large strategic investment, a leadership recruitment, and an organizational reset.

That background is different from leading a traditional frontier-model research laboratory. Wang’s established value to Meta was also as a founder and operator who had scaled an AI infrastructure company. His experience sits close to several practical bottlenecks in advanced AI: producing high-quality data, organizing evaluation and post-training work, recruiting talent, and executing at scale.
Meta’s recruitment should not be interpreted as proof that Wang independently developed a new model or that Scale itself was a frontier-model lab comparable to OpenAI, Anthropic, Google DeepMind, or Meta FAIR.
What Meta actually bought
Meta’s investment was approximately $14.3 billion for a non-voting minority interest in Scale AI, according to Meta’s second-quarter filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. The transaction implied a Scale valuation of roughly $29 billion.

- It was not a $14.3 billion salary or payment to Wang.
- It was not a full acquisition of Scale AI.
- It did not give Meta voting control equivalent to owning nearly half of Scale.
- The investment proceeds were intended for distribution to Scale shareholders and vested equity holders.
Scale continued operating as an independent company, with Jason Droege taking over as interim CEO. Scale said its operations would not be integrated into Meta.
Meta’s filing also said its AI investments supported recommendations, advertising tools, new products, and existing features—not just a speculative future lab.
Why Scale’s data business matters
Advanced AI systems require more than model architecture and computing power. Developers also need large quantities of curated data, labeled examples, evaluation sets, safety tests, and material for post-training.
Scale operates in that data infrastructure layer. Better data can help with model quality, specialist capabilities, evaluation, and safety testing. A major investment gave Meta a closer strategic relationship with a significant AI-data supplier while leaving Scale able to operate commercially.
That relationship does not mean Scale supplies all of Meta’s data, guarantees model superiority, or provides a shortcut to artificial general intelligence. Data is one part of a much larger technical and business system.
What “superintelligence” means in Meta’s strategy
In this context, “superintelligence” is a corporate ambition and organizational label—not a demonstrated technology or a precisely defined scientific milestone.
Meta was signaling an effort to build AI systems that could exceed human performance across a broad range of tasks. The language overlaps with the wider, unsettled ambition often called artificial general intelligence, or AGI. But the June report did not identify a specific model, product, technical breakthrough, or measurable milestone.
By July 2025, Meta described Superintelligence Labs as including:
- foundational AI work;
- AI products and applied research;
- FAIR, Meta’s fundamental AI research organization; and
- a new group developing the next generation of models.
Meta said Wang was leading the overall team, Nat Friedman was leading AI products and applied research, and Shengjia Zhao was chief scientist for the new effort. These titles should be distinguished from varying descriptions used in secondary coverage.
Meta’s announcement is evidence of a strategic commitment. It is not evidence that Meta had achieved superintelligence or established a validated path to AGI.

Why Meta wanted Wang
Meta already had major AI assets, including the Llama model family and FAIR. The reports nevertheless portrayed Zuckerberg as dissatisfied with Meta’s position relative to OpenAI, Google, Anthropic, and other frontier-AI developers.
That is more precise than saying Meta had “failed” in AI. The company had substantial research and distribution capabilities, but its leadership wanted a more aggressive effort concentrated around advanced models and high-impact recruiting.

Several strategic explanations are plausible:
- Wang had experience building and scaling an AI company rather than only conducting research.
- Scale’s business gave him visibility into data production, evaluation, and other operational constraints around AI development.
- Meta may have wanted someone who could recruit and organize an expensive, high-priority effort as well as understand the technology.
- The investment created a closer relationship with Scale without immediately absorbing the company.
These are strategic interpretations, not all explicitly stated reasons from Meta.
The customer-trust problem
Scale’s independence creates an important governance question: can a company partly owned by Meta continue serving Meta’s competitors with the same perceived neutrality?
Customers may reasonably ask how Scale protects confidential business information, training data, evaluation results, and product plans. Competitors may also worry that Meta’s investment creates access—direct or indirect—to commercially sensitive information.
Scale said customer data and business information would remain protected and that the company would continue operating independently. Those are Scale’s assurances, not independent verification of every technical or organizational safeguard.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe arrangement therefore depends on strong confidentiality controls, information barriers, contractual protections, and customer confidence. If customers decide the relationship creates too much competitive risk, the investment could weaken rather than strengthen Scale’s position.
Potential benefits and risks for Meta
Potential benefits
- Signal of commitment: The size of the investment shows that Meta considers frontier AI strategically central.
- Operational expertise: Wang may help connect research ambitions with recruiting, data operations, and execution.
- Data capabilities: Scale’s expertise could complement Meta’s model-training and evaluation work.
- Distribution: Meta’s large consumer platforms could provide a route from research advances to widely used products.
Risks
- “Superintelligence” has no universally agreed technical definition.
- Billions spent on talent, infrastructure, and investments do not prove that Meta can achieve AGI or superintelligence.
- Scale’s customer relationships may be affected by perceived conflicts of interest.
- Recruiting battles can increase compensation costs across the AI industry.
- A high-status new lab can create rivalry with existing research and product organizations.
- Meta could become overly dependent on a small group of executives or on expensive strategic bets.
- The investment’s financial return was uncertain when announced.
The transaction’s size should therefore be read as a measure of Meta’s conviction and willingness to spend—not as a probability estimate for technical success.
What remains unknown
The public announcements did not establish Wang’s exact compensation or employment terms, the precise number of Scale employees who moved to Meta, the lab’s initial model roadmap, or the detailed reporting lines during the first phase of the reorganization.
It also remained unclear how Meta and Scale would handle the full range of information-sharing and competitive-neutrality issues created by the investment, beyond Scale’s public assurances. Finally, the deal did not by itself show whether Meta’s new structure would produce measurable advantages over its existing research efforts.

Bottom line
Meta did recruit Alexandr Wang, but the fuller story is larger than a hiring headline. Meta invested roughly $14.3 billion for a non-voting minority stake in Scale AI, Scale remained independent, and Wang became the leader of Meta’s broader superintelligence effort.
The move showed how seriously Meta was pursuing advanced AI and how valuable data infrastructure and operational execution had become. It did not prove that Meta had achieved superintelligence, that Scale was being acquired, or that the investment guaranteed an AI lead.
