Meta is reducing Reality Labs’ investment in virtual reality and Horizon while directing more resources toward AI glasses and other wearables. Bloomberg reported that Meta began notifying employees on January 13, 2026, about cuts affecting roughly 10% of Reality Labs—more than 1,000 jobs from a division of about 15,000 people.
Meta has not announced that Quest or Horizon is being discontinued. The clearer conclusion is a strategic rebalancing: everyday AI-powered glasses are becoming the priority, while VR and the metaverse continue with tighter budgets and a stronger focus on profitability.

What Meta officially confirmed
Meta’s public disclosures confirm an investment shift, rather than a complete exit from VR. In its 2025 annual filing, Meta said it expects approximately 70% of Reality Labs operating expenses in 2026 to support wearables and about 30% to support VR and Horizon initiatives.
Meta’s Q4 2025 materials similarly describe “meaningfully” reducing investment in VR and Horizon while increasing investment in wearables. The 70/30 split is an estimate, includes shared costs, and may change as product plans evolve. It is not a breakdown of Meta’s total research-and-development budget or all of its hardware spending.

How large are the layoffs?
Bloomberg reported that Reality Labs employed approximately 15,000 people and that the reduction would affect about 10% of the division, equivalent to more than 1,000 jobs. Bloomberg also reported that employee notifications began January 13, 2026.
Those workforce figures are media-reported estimates, not a detailed workforce figure published by Meta. The reporting links the reductions primarily to VR, metaverse, Horizon, and related development work, while presenting AI-device and wearables work as strategic growth priorities.
Bloomberg also reported the closure of three development studios. That detail should not be treated as evidence that every affected product was canceled: teams can be consolidated, reassigned, slowed, or eliminated as part of a reorganization.

- Hands-free assistant, translation, calling, photography, and audio features;
- Phone-connected wearable functions; and
- Longer-term augmented-reality glasses and sensing technologies.
The most visible current example is Ray-Ban Meta. However, current smart glasses with AI features should not be confused with future AR glasses that project digital information into the wearer’s view. Meta’s filing covers products at different stages of development, and its road maps can change.
What happens to Quest?
Quest has not been publicly reported as canceled. The investment shift does suggest that some future VR hardware, first-party content, and software initiatives may receive less funding or be pursued more selectively.
Meta’s stated aim is to make VR a more profitable ecosystem over time, not to immediately abandon it. Existing Quest owners should not assume an instant loss of software updates or support, but buyers should evaluate a headset on its current games, features, support commitments, and price—not on the assumption that every long-term Meta VR promise will be delivered.

What happens to Horizon?
Horizon is Meta’s social and software layer for immersive experiences. Meta says it is reducing investment in Horizon in 2026, but that does not amount to a public shutdown announcement.
A significant part of the strategy appears to be making Horizon work more effectively on mobile as well as in headsets. That matters because it could preserve Meta’s social ecosystem even while the company reduces spending on headset-first experiences. The key uncertainty is whether a broader mobile audience can generate enough engagement to offset slower VR investment.
Why Meta is changing direction
Wearables show stronger momentum
Meta has said wearables are showing stronger momentum than parts of its VR portfolio and that the company wants to invest where it sees a stronger market position. Glasses also have a potential advantage over headsets: they can be used throughout the day without isolating the wearer or requiring a dedicated VR session.

Reality Labs is extremely expensive
Meta’s 2025 annual-report materials say Reality Labs investment reduced Meta’s 2025 operating profit by approximately $19.19 billion. Meta also expected Reality Labs’ operating losses in 2026 to remain similar to 2025 levels.
Reality Labs includes VR, Horizon, wearables, and long-term research, so those losses should not be described as “metaverse losses” alone. The financial pressure nevertheless helps explain why Meta is narrowing priorities while continuing to fund a future computing platform.
Meta sees glasses as a potential next platform
Meta’s prepared remarks frame AI glasses as a possible next major computing platform, comparable in ambition to the role smartphones came to play. That is the company’s strategic goal, not proof of future profitability or mass adoption.
AI glasses still depend on battery life, phone connectivity, cloud AI, privacy controls, camera and microphone acceptance, and distribution. A successful line of smart glasses would also not automatically mean Meta has solved the much harder engineering problem of full AR glasses.

Is Meta abandoning the metaverse?
Not completely—but it is retreating from the metaverse’s original spending profile. The evidence points to:
- Lower 2026 investment in VR and Horizon;
- Continued spending on VR ecosystems and software;
- A more prominent mobile strategy for Horizon;
- About 70% of estimated Reality Labs operating expenses going to wearables; and
- Continued treatment of Reality Labs as a long-term platform effort.
In practical terms, Meta is changing the order of operations. AI glasses and everyday wearables are the nearer-term growth vehicle; immersive VR and the broader metaverse remain longer-term bets made under stricter financial discipline.
What the shift means for consumers and developers
| Audience | Likely implication |
|---|---|
| Quest owners | No announced discontinuation, but future hardware and first-party content may be more selective. |
| VR buyers | Buy for current capabilities and support, not speculative future road maps. |
| Wearables buyers | Expect more attention on AI, audio, cameras, assistant features, and distribution. |
| Horizon users | Mobile access may become more important as headset investment declines. |
| Developers | VR projects may face a higher bar for funding, engagement, and profitability. |
| Investors | Watch whether wearable growth improves Reality Labs’ economics rather than assuming a budget shift guarantees returns. |
What buyers should consider
Smart glasses and VR headsets solve different problems. Glasses may offer more frequent daily utility and easier distribution, but they raise distinct privacy concerns because they can record or listen in public. They also rely heavily on a phone, cloud services, battery capacity, and social acceptance.
VR offers deeper immersion for gaming, fitness, media, and social experiences, but it requires dedicated hardware and longer sessions. Buyers concerned about platform risk should prioritize explicit current support, available software, comfort, and their actual use case.
Meta’s official pages for Quest and Quest 3S are the appropriate places to check current models, availability, and pricing. Prices and bundles vary by country, storage, prescription-lens options, retailer, and promotion date.
What remains uncertain
- Which future Quest products Meta will ship and when;
- How much Horizon usage will come from mobile users;
- Whether AI glasses can become profitable at scale;
- How much current smart-glasses momentum translates into full AR products; and
- Whether the estimated 70/30 Reality Labs allocation remains in place.
A larger wearables budget does not mean every wearable project will launch. Likewise, a smaller VR budget does not prove that Quest is ending. The most supportable reading is a portfolio reallocation driven by product momentum and the financial cost of maintaining a broad, long-term Reality Labs strategy.
