Menlo Ventures announced an investment in AI software-development company Factory after a public dispute involving Factory CEO Matan Grinberg, investor Chris Degnan and Vinod Khosla. Factory’s latest financing round was announced the previous month at a reported $5 billion valuation, but Menlo did not disclose how much it invested. Menlo’s public endorsement signals confidence in Factory; there is no confirmation that the investment was intended as a response to Khosla’s criticism.

What Menlo announced—and what remains undisclosed

TechCrunch reported on October 5, 2026, that Menlo Ventures partner Matt Murphy and his team had invested in Factory as part of the company’s latest financing round. That round, announced the previous month, valued Factory at $5 billion. Menlo declined to disclose its check size.

TechCrunch, citing an unnamed source familiar with the deal, reported that the investment was significant for Menlo and that the firm would have invested more if there had been room on Factory’s cap table. That is an attributed characterization, not a disclosed dollar amount.

What happened between Factory and Khosla?

The dispute centered on conflicting accounts of Chris Degnan’s departure from a board-adviser role at Factory. Degnan later joined Cognition as its chief revenue officer, and Khosla Ventures had invested in both Cognition and Factory.

Factory co-founder and CEO Matan Grinberg said he removed Degnan because he feared Degnan may have shared confidential information with Factory competitor Cognition. Degnan disputed that account, saying he resigned and had rebuffed a competing job offer from Grinberg. The available reporting does not establish which account is correct.

TechCrunch reported that Vinod Khosla criticized Factory as a desperate “struggling second tier competitor” and accused Grinberg of lying and impugning Degnan’s character. Those are Khosla’s reported words and accusations, not independently established findings. The reviewed sources do not include a primary transcript or post confirming the quotation.

Why Menlo’s investment drew attention

Menlo’s announcement, authored by Matt Murphy, Derek Xiao, Sam Borja and Sabrina Lu, took a strongly positive view of Factory. The firm praised the founders, technology and customer relationships. Its public support came shortly after Khosla’s reported criticism, making the timing notable—but neither the timing nor Menlo’s favorable language proves the investment was meant to answer him.

Menlo named Nvidia and Blackstone as enterprise customers and described Factory as serving hundreds of thousands of developers. Those figures and customer claims come from Factory’s investor; they are not independently audited in the sources reviewed.

What Factory does, according to Menlo

Menlo describes Factory as building a “software factory”: a platform intended to automate more of software development than code generation alone. In the firm’s account, the workflow can include planning, code review, testing, security, documentation and coordination.

Menlo calls this “outcome-driven development”: engineers set objectives, delegate work to AI agents and review what they produce. The firm also points to shared enterprise context and governance, a choice of models, and sovereign deployment as features. These are Menlo’s descriptions of the platform, not an independent assessment of its capabilities.

This positioning differs in scope from a tool focused on completing code or an agent handling a bounded coding task: Factory is presented as coordinating a broader development lifecycle. Menlo also emphasizes enterprise context and governance, as well as model choice. The available material does not independently compare Factory’s capabilities with those of competing products.

How to read Menlo’s market claims

Menlo’s investment announcement says, “Coding is AI’s first killer use case.” It also estimates that the coding market “has grown from $550 million to $4 billion to more than $30 billion in two years” and now “captures almost half of all AI application spend.” These are Menlo’s market estimates and framing, not neutral or independently verified measurements in the sources reviewed.

Menlo also says GitHub commits are “up 6x,” but the cited passage does not specify the baseline period. The figure should not be read as a defined annual or other time-bound increase.
