Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma said on October 6, 2026, that the state had decided to constitute its Sixth Pay Commission and that the process had started. It should be read as the Chief Minister’s expectation at the time, not as evidence that the appointments or formal notification followed.

Has Meghalaya announced a pay rise or arrears?

The Meghalaya State Government Employees’ Federation has sought implementation from January 1, 2026, according to UNI. That is the federation’s demand; it is not evidence that the government has accepted that date. Employees should wait for a formal government decision before treating any effective date or arrears as confirmed.
Who will be covered, and what will the commission examine?
The reviewed reports do not confirm which employee groups will be covered or whether pensioners will be included. They also do not establish whether allowances or other service conditions will be addressed. What the past pay commissions do—and do not—tell employees
UNI reports that Meghalaya implemented the Fifth Pay Commission in 2017 retrospectively from January 1, 2017, and implemented the Fourth Pay Commission in 2007. These dates provide historical context, but they do not establish a legally fixed ten-year revision cycle or guarantee that the Sixth Commission’s recommendations will take effect from a particular date.

When an official notification or government order becomes available, look for the details that distinguish commission formation from an approved change to pay:
- Whether the chairperson and members have been formally appointed.
- The commission’s terms of reference, including any stated treatment of allowances, pensions, or employee categories.
- Any deadline for submitting recommendations.
- Whether a later order merely receives recommendations or approves revised pay.
- The approved effective date and any terms governing arrears.
As of the October 6–10, 2026 reports, the notification, named members, final remit, recommendation deadline, coverage, and implementation schedule were not confirmed. The expected one-to-two-week window was a forecast, not a completed milestone.
