Mark Eisele became president of the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association (NCBA) in February 2024, bringing the perspective of a Wyoming rancher who works with his family on public and private lands. His presidency focused on the future of cattle production, producers’ freedom to operate, property rights and managed grazing. Eisele’s term is historical: Gene Copenhaver took office as NCBA president in February 2026.
Who is Mark Eisele?
Eisele is a Wyoming cattle rancher. He, his wife Trudy and their children operate the historic King Ranch near Cheyenne, grazing both public and private lands. That experience shaped his public emphasis on the practical conditions ranchers need to keep producing beef.
When was Eisele NCBA president?
NCBA announced on February 2, 2024, that Eisele had become president during the 2024 Cattle Industry Convention in Orlando. The association’s officer team took office at the end of the convention. He is not the association’s current president: NCBA announced that Gene Copenhaver took office at the end of CattleCon 2026.
What did Eisele emphasize during his presidency?
Eisele said he wanted to strengthen the cattle industry for future generations while preserving producers’ freedom to operate. He placed particular emphasis on property rights and managed grazing on public lands. He argued that restrictions on public-land grazing could signal future restrictions affecting private property and water rights; that was his rationale, not an independently established prediction.

In describing the message he wanted decision makers to hear, Eisele said: “Grazing is good and beef is a valuable protein. We need flexibility in the way we produce it.”
He also said he wanted to hear directly from NCBA members about their challenges and create opportunities for young leaders. These statements describe Eisele’s 2024 priorities, not necessarily the association’s current agenda.

What were NCBA’s policy priorities in 2024?
In January 2024, NCBA identified Farm Bill reauthorization and animal-health provisions, voluntary conservation, and opposition to federal policies it considered harmful to cattle producers among its policy priorities. Eisele supported the association’s positions on animal health and voluntary conservation. NCBA’s announcement also quoted him criticizing animal-activist efforts against cattle production and the Beef Checkoff. These are NCBA’s advocacy positions and Eisele’s attributed views from that period.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Who leads NCBA now, and how does its agenda differ?
Gene Copenhaver became NCBA president in February 2026. The association’s 2026 policy priorities address profitability, regulatory reform, animal-health protections, trade, nutrition policy, livestock transportation and workforce concerns. Those are current organizational priorities under a different president; they should not be presented as Eisele’s statements or as a continuation of his 2024 agenda without further evidence.
