McLaren plans to return to the 24 Hours of Le Mans and the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) in 2027 with a new LMDh race car called the MCL-HY. The company has also announced a separate track-only counterpart, the MCL-HY GTR, for its exclusive Project: Endurance client initiative. The announcement outlines a future program, not a race entry already completed or a predicted result.
When is McLaren returning to Le Mans?
McLaren says it will compete in WEC and the 24 Hours of Le Mans from 2027. The company announced its WEC entry in April 2025 with 2027 as its target; in April 2026 it named the race car MCL-HY and its track-car counterpart MCL-HY GTR. McLaren and the FIA reported the MCL-HY reveal on 4 May 2026, with testing planned during 2026 ahead of winter homologation and a 2027 WEC debut. The FIA’s reveal report documents that planned timetable.
McLaren later reported that the car had begun its full on-track test program and made a public dynamic appearance at Goodwood in July 2026. Testing and a public appearance are steps in the program; they do not establish the final homologation outcome or a result at a future Le Mans race. McLaren’s WEC updates cover the program.
What is McLaren’s 2027 Hypercar called?
The WEC competition prototype is the MCL-HY. The FIA identifies it as an LMDh design. Its reported configuration combines a Dallara carbon-fibre monocoque, a twin-turbocharged V6 race engine and a hybrid MGU system. The FIA lists output of up to 520 kW to the rear axle and a minimum weight of 1,030 kg; those are FIA-reported specifications, and the qualifiers matter. The FIA’s technical description says development is intended to balance performance with endurance-racing efficiency.

Is the MCL-HY GTR the same car as the WEC Hypercar?
No. The MCL-HY is the competition car McLaren plans to enter in WEC and Le Mans. The MCL-HY GTR is its separately announced track-car counterpart, associated with Project: Endurance, an exclusive offer for VIP McLaren clients. McLaren has not presented the GTR as a road car or as the WEC race car itself. The reviewed official announcements do not state a public price or establish general retail availability. McLaren’s program information describes the initiative.
What does the MCL-HY reveal livery refer to?
The 2026 test livery takes inspiration from McLaren’s M6A Can-Am car. The FIA World Endurance Championship reports that the M6A won five of six Can-Am rounds in 1967 and links the car to Bruce McLaren’s ambition to take it to Le Mans. The MCL-HY GTR name also invokes McLaren’s heritage: “GTR” recalls the F1 GTR that won Le Mans in 1995 and later McLaren GTR track cars. These are historical and branding references, not evidence that the new prototype is a direct technical continuation of the older cars. FIA WEC’s reveal coverage describes the M6A connection.
