Lewis Hamilton said in September 2025 that he had sold his entire car collection. A year later, a report described him arriving at Monza in a Ferrari F40 said to be his. Those accounts leave his current garage unclear, but they frame the story: the F40 was the one car he said he would still want, while the models linked to his earlier collection come from an incomplete, partly unverified record.
Did Lewis Hamilton sell his car collection?
In comments ahead of the 2025 Azerbaijan Grand Prix, Hamilton said he had sold his cars and was more interested in art. Asked about buying Ferrari’s F80, he replied: “I don’t have any cars anymore,” and added, “I don’t have any cars, so I got rid of all my cars. I’m more into art nowadays. If I was going to get a car, it would be the F40. But that’s a nice piece of art.” Motorsport.com reported the comments on 20 September 2025.
That statement is not the last word on his car ownership. In September 2026, Spanish publication AS reported that Hamilton arrived at Monza in a Ferrari F40 described as his. Its account includes Hamilton discussing his search for an especially low-mileage example. The available reporting does not establish when or on what terms he acquired it, so the two accounts should be kept distinct: he said he had sold his collection in 2025, and a later report described an F40 as his in 2026. AS published the Monza report in September 2026.
Is the Ferrari F40 Hamilton’s dream car?
It was the car he singled out in his 2025 comments. Hamilton said that if he were to buy a car, he would choose the F40, calling it “a nice piece of art.” The September 2026 AS report then described an F40 as his and carried his account of finding a low-mileage car. That makes the F40 both his stated choice and, according to later reporting, a current ownership story—not proof that he kept it through the sale he described in 2025.

Which cars have been associated with Hamilton’s former collection?
There is no official, complete inventory of Hamilton’s historic garage. Motorsport.com’s September 2025 account compiled cars he had been seen driving or had previously confirmed owning, while explicitly noting that the full collection had never been officially confirmed. The list below should therefore be read as reported associations, not a verified record that he owned every model or still owns any of them.
| Group | Cars reported among his former collection or associated with Hamilton |
|---|---|
| Modern supercars and hypercars | Pagani Zonda 760 LH; Mercedes-AMG Project One; Ferrari LaFerrari and LaFerrari Aperta; McLaren P1; 1995 McLaren F1, reported as chassis 044 |
| Mercedes performance and luxury models | Mercedes-AMG SLS Black Series; Mercedes-AMG GT R in ex-F1 safety car specification; Mercedes-Maybach S600; Mercedes EQC |
| Classic and collectible cars | Ferrari 599 SA Aperta; 1966 Shelby Cobra 427; 1967 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 “Eleanor” replica; Mini Cooper |
| Utility vehicle | Mercedes-AMG G63 6×6 |
The names and classifications above reflect Motorsport.com’s reported historic list; its account does not establish purchase dates, sale dates, or present ownership for each car. The “Eleanor” entry is specifically described as a replica.

What cars did Hamilton say he owned earlier in his career?
In a 2016 Top Gear interview, Hamilton recalled that he had a Mercedes C300 when he joined McLaren. After his first Grand Prix win, he said he asked for an AMG and received a CLK Black Series. He also recalled receiving an SL Black Series after the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, despite his car breaking down. He said the SL had 200 km on it and that he had had it since 2009. These are his recollections from that interview, not a current ownership list. Top Gear published the interview on 27 June 2016.
What does Hamilton look for in a road car?
In the same 2016 interview, Hamilton described his priorities as appearance, sound and power: “I’m always waiting for the new and next thing to come out, always about that sexy look. So it’s the look, the sound, and I’m always looking for horsepower.” He added: “But I’m more old school and I like a V12.” Those comments offer a dated snapshot of his preferences, rather than a claim about what he currently drives.

Is Hamilton’s Ferrari F1 car part of his private collection?
No. Hamilton’s Ferrari Formula One car belongs to his work as a driver for Scuderia Ferrari; it is separate from privately owned road cars. Ferrari announced on 1 February 2024 that Hamilton would join the team in 2025 on a multi-year agreement. Ferrari’s announcement concerns his team role, not ownership of a road-going Ferrari.
