McKinney National Airport’s new commercial passenger terminal is scheduled to open on Nov. 11, 2026, with Avelo Airlines flights planned to begin that day. The City of McKinney said on Sept. 24 that construction remained on schedule. The airport is in McKinney, about 30 miles north of downtown Dallas—not within Dallas city limits.
When does McKinney airport open?
The city and airport list Nov. 11, 2026, as the planned opening date for the passenger terminal and the start of Avelo service. The City of McKinney reported on Sept. 24, 2026, that construction was on time for that date. It is a scheduled opening, not a confirmation that the terminal has already opened; plans can change.
Where is the airport, and why is it called Dallas’ third airport?
McKinney National Airport is in McKinney, roughly 30 miles north of downtown Dallas. Calling it “Dallas’ third airport” is regional shorthand: the airport is not in Dallas proper. It is a new commercial passenger option for the Dallas–Fort Worth area, while its existing general-aviation activity is expected to continue.
The terminal is planned for the east side of the airport, with access from FM 546 and the US 380/US 75 area. The airport and Visit McKinney describe its location and access information on their official pages: McKinney National Airport and Visit McKinney.

How should travelers compare McKinney with DFW or Love Field?
The new airport adds another departure point, but the available information does not establish that it will always be faster or cheaper than Dallas Fort Worth International Airport or Dallas Love Field. Compare the details that affect your own trip:
- Origin and ground access: Consider where you are starting and how you will reach McKinney, DFW or Love Field. The airport’s location north of Dallas may suit some travelers better than others.
- Destination and date: Check whether the route is operating on your travel date and whether a nonstop flight is available. Several McKinney routes are scheduled to launch after the terminal opens.
- Total trip cost and schedule: Compare the fare, flight times and any costs that matter for your itinerary rather than assuming a new airport means a lower price.
- Parking and rental access: McKinney lists 980 public spaces and on-site rentals, but its parking prices were not yet stated in the airport material reviewed here. Confirm current rates and availability before driving.
DFW is a much larger, established airport: its official facts page says it became operational in 1974 and reports more than 86 million customers a year, along with 193 domestic and 77 international nonstop destinations in a fast-facts sheet last updated in September 2026. Those figures provide context for DFW’s scale, not a like-for-like comparison with McKinney’s planned terminal capacity. DFW Airport facts.
