McDonald’s Ended Its IBM AI Drive-Thru Test—not Voice Ordering

McDonald’s ended its IBM-powered automated drive-thru ordering test in 2024, but it did not abandon AI voice ordering. The company said it would explore other solutions, and its 2025 shareholder letter later confirmed that select restaurants were testing AI voice ordering through a Google-developed computing platform.

What McDonald’s ended

The decision concerned a specific project: Automated Order Taking (AOT), the voice-ordering system McDonald’s developed with IBM for drive-thru restaurants. The companies began their collaboration in 2021. Contemporary reporting said the test covered more than 100 U.S. restaurants; that figure was reported at the time, rather than presented as an independently audited count. McDonald’s 2021 announcement describes the collaboration and AOT’s purpose.

McDonald’s announced in June 2024 that it was ending the current IBM AOT arrangement. The tested technology was to be switched off at participating restaurants by July 26, 2024. The timeline and reported test scope were covered by Restaurant Business.

McDonald’s characterized the move as following a “thoughtful review”: the pilot had successes, but the company wanted to explore voice-ordering solutions more broadly and consider longer-term, scalable options. It said it expected to make an informed decision about a future solution by the end of 2024.

Why the IBM test ended

The company did not publicly identify one technical failure, financial calculation, or customer complaint as the definitive reason for ending the arrangement. Its stated explanation was that it wanted to assess voice ordering more broadly rather than continue with the current IBM setup.

Customer complaints and viral examples of incorrect or unusual orders formed part of the public context. CBS News coverage described reported ordering errors and mixed results. Those accounts are evidence of problems customers reported, not proof that McDonald’s officially blamed those incidents for its decision. The company did not disclose comprehensive accuracy data that would establish how often the system made mistakes across the pilot.

Why drive-thru ordering is a hard test

A drive-thru system has to do more than recognize speech in a quiet setting. It must handle engine and road noise, several people speaking, accents and speech differences, menu changes, substitutions, ambiguous quantities, and customers revising an order mid-conversation. It also needs to connect reliably to restaurant menus, prices, inventory, and point-of-sale systems.

When the system is uncertain, guessing can turn a recognition problem into a wrong order. A practical system needs to confirm the complete order, let customers correct it, and hand the conversation to a crew member when it cannot resolve an ambiguity. A faster exchange is not an improvement if it creates more corrections, refunds, food waste, or delays at payment and pickup.

What the decision did—and did not—mean

Claim What the evidence supports
McDonald’s stopped using the IBM AOT pilot Yes. The test technology was to be switched off at participating restaurants by July 26, 2024, according to Restaurant Business.
McDonald’s canceled every AI system No. The decision was about this voice-ordering test, not every form of AI or restaurant technology.
McDonald’s ended all work with IBM No. McDonald’s said IBM remained a trusted partner and that it would continue using many IBM products across its global system, as reported by Restaurant Business.
McDonald’s permanently abandoned voice ordering No. The company said it remained interested in the broader concept, and later official material described further testing.
Viral order errors were the official reason for ending the deal Not established. They were reported context, not a cause McDonald’s publicly singled out.

What happened after the IBM pilot

McDonald’s continued exploring the technology after the 2024 shutdown. Its 2025 shareholder letter described Edge, a computing platform developed with Google, being used in select restaurants to test capabilities including AI voice ordering and smarter shift management.

That disclosure does not establish that Google replaced IBM as a one-for-one AOT vendor, that a single replacement system was selected, or that AI voice ordering became standard across U.S. restaurants. McDonald’s 2025 Form 10-K discusses technology and digital strategy but does not establish a nationwide voice-ordering rollout.

What a future system would have to prove

The important test is not simply whether software can hear an order. A viable drive-thru system has to improve accurate, profitable service from the first greeting through payment and pickup. That requires dependable order confirmation, a clear route to a human employee, safe handling of unavailable items and duplicate requests, and the ability to accept corrections without forcing customers to start over.

It also has to work with restaurant-specific menus and operations, while making clear how any voice recordings or transcripts are handled. McDonald’s has not publicly established that a future system has met those requirements at chainwide scale. Its confirmed position is narrower: the IBM pilot ended, while exploration and testing of voice ordering continued.
