There is no automatic winner. A fixed deposit (FD) may suit money you want to keep relatively predictable over a stated tenure; a bond may suit money you can leave invested for a defined period and whose price swings you can tolerate. Compare the specific instrument’s after-tax return, access to your money, risks and maturity—not just its headline rate. A falling share market, by itself, does not show that you should move money out of equities.

Moneycontrol’s October 11, 2026 article reports expert-context ranges of 6%–8% for FDs and 11%–15% for corporate bonds, depending on risk. Those figures are not a universal current-market range. The bond range should not be compared directly with a government-security yield or an FD rate without matching dates, credit quality, maturities, purchase prices, tax treatment and payout assumptions. How should you decide between an FD and a bond?
Start with the job the money needs to do. A product’s advertised rate cannot tell you whether it fits your withdrawal date, cash-flow needs or ability to accept a loss if you need to sell early.

- Return basis: An FD’s quoted rate is not directly equivalent to a bond’s coupon. For a bond, consider the purchase price, yield to maturity, coupon cash flows, reinvestment assumptions and taxes. Coupon alone is not total return.
- Risks: Check FD deposit-insurance eligibility and limits. For a bond, assess issuer credit, interest-rate sensitivity, liquidity, call features and maturity.
- Cash-flow fit: Compare the FD’s payout or compounding terms with the bond’s coupon schedule and principal repayment date.
When an FD may fit
An FD may suit a saver who values a stated tenure and relatively predictable value, particularly when the money may need to remain accessible. That predictability does not necessarily mean you can withdraw early without a cost: check the bank’s terms before placing the deposit.
Eligible bank deposits are insured by the Deposit Insurance and Credit Guarantee Corporation up to ₹5 lakh per depositor per bank, including principal and interest, subject to conditions, as reported in the Moneycontrol article. This protection does not apply to bonds, and it should not be assumed to cover balances above the stated limit.

When a bond may fit
A bond may suit money you can keep invested for a defined period if you understand the issuer, maturity, liquidity, coupon payments and potential market-price losses before maturity. Government securities carry sovereign credit quality, but their market prices still fluctuate. Corporate bonds can offer higher yields while adding issuer credit risk.

Why can a bond lose value when rates rise?
For an existing fixed-rate bond, a rise in market yields can make its fixed payments less attractive than those on newly issued investments. Its market price may therefore fall. SEBI puts the relationship simply: “When interest rates rise, bond prices may fall, and vice versa.” If you hold to maturity and the issuer repays as promised, interim price movements may matter less than they would if you need to sell early; holding to maturity does not eliminate issuer or other risks.
Bond return is not just coupon income. RBI explains that it also reflects price gains or losses and gains or losses from reinvesting cash flows. Prices in the secondary market can respond to interest rates, inflation expectations, liquidity, other markets and policy actions. RBI FAQ on Government Securities

Duration makes the sensitivity visible
Duration measures a bond’s sensitivity to yield changes. RBI gives an illustrative approximation: a 15-year bond with a duration of seven years would fall approximately 7% if its yield rose by one percentage point, with convexity omitted. This is an explanation of the relationship, not a forecast for a particular bond. In general, longer duration means greater sensitivity to yield changes.

A corporate bond’s higher quoted yield is compensation investors may demand for taking additional risks; it is not a free increase in return. The issuer may fail to make payments, and a bond may be difficult to sell at a fair price when needed. SEBI identifies default, interest-rate, liquidity and call risks. It also cautions that a credit rating is an agency opinion that can change, not a substitute for assessing the investment.

Before investing, understand who owes the money, when principal is due, whether the issuer can repay early under a call feature, how the bond trades, and what happens if you need to sell before maturity. Do not treat a high yield or rating as assurance that you will receive the expected cash flows.
Can you reduce the risk of choosing the wrong rate point?
Rather than put every new investment into a single maturity based on a guess about when rates will peak, one expert quoted by Moneycontrol suggests staggering fresh investments across maturities. This approach can spread reinvestment dates; it does not guarantee a better return or remove price and credit risks.
What to compare before committing money
- Write down the amount and date you need it. Separate money that must be available on demand from money that can remain invested to maturity.
- Read the actual terms. For an FD, confirm tenure, payout or compounding, premature-withdrawal conditions and the bank’s deposit-insurance eligibility. For a bond, confirm issuer, maturity, coupon schedule, purchase price, yield to maturity, call terms and liquidity.
- Compare on the same basis. Use dated offers or market prices, account for taxes and reinvestment assumptions, and distinguish a bond’s coupon from its yield and total return.
- Stress-test an early exit. Ask what happens if you need the principal before maturity: an FD may pay less interest under its closure terms, while a bond sale may realize a loss if its market price has fallen.
- Match risk to purpose. Do not choose a corporate bond solely because its yield is higher; consider whether issuer and liquidity risks are acceptable for that money.
Does a falling stock market mean you should switch to FDs or bonds?
No. A market decline alone does not establish that you should change an equity allocation. The FD-versus-bond decision concerns how to invest money for a particular goal and horizon; whether to reduce equities is a separate decision that depends on your plan, time horizon, risk capacity and need for diversification. Avoid treating a short-term market move as proof that one of these fixed-income choices is automatically right for you.
